I feel like all these helicarriers are a very weird choice right now since rotary aircraft are too vulnerable and don’t have the range to be useful in Pacific operations. It seems if they’re smart they’ll convert these ships into missile boats that launch and land drones. To me, they only make sense if we’re assuming they will be used to support a US led operation that actually makes ground assaults in the Pacific and I really can’t see that.
@frankcessna73452 ай бұрын
1/. Anti submarine - North Korea and China have a huge fleet of submarines. Just to provide 24/7 protection of the outer convergence zone requires 6-8 ++ helicopters. 2/. Both North and South Korea have very long shore lines - making amphibious operations very likely….. like.y not in a “traditional” over the beach operations but “thunder” raids. These ships would make things very interesting for North Korean.

Helicarriers make it easy to lock down a naval passage "over there" from submarines/small boats since helicopters will outgun them. Since NK doesnt really have a naval force that can contest such a presence, helicarriers are good enough for the task at hand.
@kkang28282 ай бұрын
Dokdo class is an LHD, like the US Wasp and Tarawa class. They’re not just helicarriers. Their main purpose is to support landing operations. Also, being the largest ships in the ROK navy, they are meant to act as flagships as well.

Sometimes lessons are expensive. Given the expansion of the PLAN, adapting helo-capable ships to a sea control role (reminiscent of the RN _Invincible_ class) may be a consideration.

I’ve been saying for the while now that the US needs to expedite a new class of light escort / ASW carrier AND either bring back the S-3 or expedite a modern replacement.

@RK-cj4oc2 ай бұрын
@@cruisinguy6024 Doesnt the "America" class light carrier fill that role?
@cruisinguy60242 ай бұрын
@@RK-cj4oc No, the America class is an amphibious assault ship designed to support amphibious operations (2/3 of the souls on board are Marines to assault enemy shores). Basically the whole ship is designed around putting Marines on an enemy shore and supporting them. I was referring to an ASW or Escort carrier slightly larger than the America class whose purpose is ASW defense and convoy escort - so they'd need air defense fighters to meet enemy bomber raids. The America class are super capable but most of them will have well decks where the back end of the ship submerges into the sea so hovvercraft and other landing crafft and drive in to load equipment or personnel to take them ashore, meanwhile other Marines are loading onto helicopters topside to make the trip ashore. In WW2 one of the biggest deciding factors of the war in Europe was the ability of the US to send convoys across the Atlantic to supply allied forces. In a modern European conflict this will become exponentially harder with modern submarine warfare so having a carrier that can support a supply convoy by pushing out the ASW barrier will be worth its weight in gold. The same applies for a war in the Pacific; the "amphibs" like the America class will be needed to support the Marines - not to mention they lack the ability to launch fixed wing ASW aircraft as well as fleet defense aircraft.

Its a ship made in response to the JMSDF's "helicopter destroyers" and unless Tokyo will stop building aircraft carriers, Seoul will hold onto the Dokdo class. Just like Bangkok insists on holding on the Chakri Narubet

Hoping the Philippine Navy (PN) will acquire 1~2 derivative of the Dokdo-class LPH even if its only a helicopter carrier! Though I'd priortized building-up the surface combatants that will protect them and the Tarlac-class LPD. At minimium the PN needs at least 4 Air Warfare Destroyer along with 8+ Anti-Submarine Frigate with addtional ships used to escort convoy or patrol the philippine EEZ.

All of the problem about the Dokdo class could've been solve if only back in the day the ROK navy top brass understood more clearly what a LPH is use for and not just blindly copy the US LPHs half heartly by just reduce the size because the Dokdo should have 2 floor internal hangar under the flight deck, one upper for aviation elements and a lower for amphibious units dock and not combining it all in one hanger like the US Wasp class or French Mistral. For the second ship the Marado there was talk about modification to have 1 more hangar floor but then that would be a significant modification and just adding few hundred tons would make the ship another class of ship by ROK standard hence it would be consider as a different whole new project and not a 2nd Dokdo class ship so it was rejected hence why the Dokdo class is kinda half-assed LPH. Is funny how ROKN envisioned to make a "over the horizon" amphibious landing with a whole fleet of few dozens of transport helicopter escorted with attack helicopters along side few dozen of amphibious armored vehicle when its amphibious ships lack the capability not only just the Dokdo class but also the Cheong Wang Bong class LST which if they expand it's rear dock a little can fit one LCAC but no, they for some reason didn't even bother and just put two LCM on the ship forward deck, compromising any stealth element of the ship. All in all, ROKN not making 2 internal hangars for its' Dokdo class and expand the dock to fit one LCAC which can deliver a tank or two for Cheong Wang Bong class LST is a big mystery of ROKN because these doesn't cost much but increase the utility of the ships on another level. No the Dokdo class can't carry the F35B because they are not design with it in mind, the ship elevator isn't big and capable to lift the F35B and the flight deck isn't made to deal with the aircraft's exhaust heat. The Dokdo class is a amphibious landing ship not a purposely built helicopter "destroyer" like the Hyuga or helicopter carrier in disguise like Izumo of the JMSDF. As for aircraft carrier the most important thing is to have the US let ROKN have nuclear propelled attack submarines 1st to counter the biggest thread of NK SLBM subs and then secondly to escort the future carrier. And for ROKN it is better to have medium to large CATOBAR carrier with potentially KF21N as fighter aircraft rather than a STOBAR/VL light carrier with F35Bs which will cost about the same for its life cycle since F35Bs are prohibitively expansive to purchase and maintain even compare to other F35s, and F35Bs can't carry the all important bunker busting munition to deal with NK's network of ant colonies.

Most likely it would be protected by surface combatants like the Chungnam-class guided-missile frigate or Chungmugong Yi-Sun-sin-class destroyers which have enough air defense to both defend themselves and the Dokdo-class they escort. Also the latter is well defended with 21-cells RIM-116 rolling airframe missile (RAM), and Goalkeeper 30mm close-in weapon system (CIWS) on the ROKS Dokdo, and K-SAAM along with Phalanx 20mm gatling gun CIWS on the ROKS Marado along with superior MF-STAR AESA radar!
