Misty was a much appreciated female supporting character growing up. She's spunky, ambitious, annoying, sarcastic, gets flustered etc etc. Just a lovely character with both strengths and flaws. She got angry and defensive really quickly but was also incredibly forgiving and kind. It's wonderful to see characters to be written beyond archetypes. Really just such a fun character to connect with

That is the exact opposite of the somewhat obvious truth and I can't tell if you've been blinded or if you are joking (Sorry this was a bit mean;) To explain, the way the show is going and the way the show is, being an anime for a game series that is set in a different region with different characters for each new game generation, it wouldn't be the smartest move exactly to keep the same three or two of the same main characters throughout the entire series, which was definitely going to be long from where they saw. To have the main character travel through every new region to promote the new games coming out. But of course they would want to showcase the new characters, or to have new ones with new, different Pokemon, the core of the series, other than keeping all of the same characters for the whole show. But if they changed the main character a lot, the show could become inconsistent. So they change the human companions as well as the Pokemon companions. Showing kids the new characters from the new games, and the new Pokemon, making them main characters and lovable and iconic so that the kids will want to buy the new games. The same argument could be said for like, any of Ash's old Pokemon. Almost any of them. They were left with professor Oak. It feels like less of a spit in the face, but still. Be glad as a fan of Misty, you got more of her than some other characters. :)

cr102, I'm glad to see somebody talking about what you called the nostalgia bias. I personally wouldn't call THIS that, but everybody has different perspectives (and preferences.) Someone's past with something and enjoyment with something can change the way they remember it. It can change their preferences, and make them who they are. That's why we have likes and dislikes, not the only reason but it shapes who we are. Like how I never would appreciate Squirtle and it's line if I didn't end up getting a shiny one as my second starter in X. And I understand this. But I see people throwing trash at the newer games and giving glory to the pixely ones for this reason, and it just isn't right. I've seen a video talking about how "Pokemon lost it's spark", and that simply isn't true. Obviously it's different now, but different doesn't mean bad. Sometimes these people don't even play the newer games, or watch the newer anime, and yet they hate on it or dislike it. How do you know if something's good or bad if you don't try it? What if you played the 3D games and now have nostalgia for THEM? Or would you still be, biased, towards the old ones? Nostalgia bias. Minorly rude but accurate.

Exactly, plus togepi blossoms the feminine and girly side to her being the material trainer to togepi, honestly it's such a missed opportunity for misty to not keep togetic, because togetic would be a unique and third ace member of her pokemon team being normal and fairy type. Also that her other aces were gyrados and psyduck. Which if you remember she likes jigglypuff too who is also normal and fairy, so give hint misty might like fairy and maybe normal types as well. I wish pokemon gave us more episodes to show misty catching more pokemon that aren't water types, because all know she loves water pokemon, but that doesn't mean she doesn't have love to other types lessl. She only hates bug types because she is terrified of bugs which is understanding.

I get the feeling that later writers didn't like Misty's initial tomboy attitude and felt it was something she needed to mature out of. Like they needed to make her more overly feminine and demure for her character to "grow up". It all starts with Togepi and just goes on from there, she becomes a less active character and overall just becomes less aggressive and vocal.

It was marketing and is still marketing.....Pokemon anime's main objective is to promote the franchisee and whenever new Nintendo game comes out, Pokemon anime have to make changes to bring in materials from the new product to market awareness....The creators have very little to say when it comes to directions....Its the products producers who give them direction and they have to work on it... This is how Japanese Animation industry works when it comes to animes that tied to products like Super Robots, Real Robots Gundam.....etc.

The only story related issues I have ever been bothered about ever while watching this series is just the fact that Ash seems to forget his entire expereience as a trainer at the start of every new season. It's such a immersion break. I get that they want to introduce the basics to new viewers. But why the heck is not Ash the teacher for some rookies? That would have made so much more sense...

Does he actually though? Obviously he does in BW, no question of that. But as for the other series I really don't see it. He has a few dumbass moments at the start of advanced generation, but it's really just a small few select moments, and they stop doing them very early on. Its not like Ash wasn't already prone to moments of dumbassery in kanto, orange islands and Johto. Sinnoh Ash always felt like an experienced trainer who knew what he was doing, same for XY and onwards. I feel like BW has caused sort of a Mandela effect where people think the problems with BW were present in every other series when they weren't. Like the whole thing people say about Ash never aging? That was not a thing until BW. previous series made multiple references to time passing, one particular special set around the 3rd movie was a celebration of it being a whole year since Ash met pikachu. It's only in BW that Ash is suddenly 10 again, but now people act as if Ash has just never been aging the whole time instead of the truth that its just a weird retcon that BW introduced.

I think Misty is a well written character because she is not a "support-character" but she has her story. When i was a kid i didn't fully catch the Ash-Misty relationship, and i was more oriented in catch 'em all (like Ash), but now i see their relationship very childish and very funny. It's the gold standard for real life relationships! ...and i grief for the last episode "Here your bike, bye". Damn you writers!

I think the main issue for me is that there wasn't a reason for Misty to get involved in the first place. I would've liked Ash to acknowledge that he needs her expertise as a gym leader for whatever battle it is and then put her growth at the center of it and show why Ash trusted Misty to be the only person who could help. Maybe it's something specifically related to her immense knowledge of water pokemon or something.

I remember the Mirage episode, even though Misty wasn’t my favourite character, (her short temper and angry tantrums got on my nerves at times), I was excited to see her come back and interact with Ash and Brock again. But then the way the episode immediately jumped to Togepi getting kidnapped and then introducing this princess character I was like ‘Wait….. I thought this episode was gonna be focused on Misty? Who’s this princess?’ Also, Togepi was treated like a baby for so long that it was pretty jarring when it evolved and Misty set it free to protect the other Togepi.

Me too. She wasn't my favorite character for the same reason, because she was quick-tempered and angry tantrums also annoyed me (I can't stand people like that with that kind of character either. I've often had to deal with people like that in the past and I don't get along with them ). I thought that Misty was very superficial and the way she treated Psyduck, I always felt sorry for him. I'm also glad that I'm not the only one who found the episode with this strange Togepi kingdom... well... how can I put it nicely, it was very confusing. 😅

I am a Misty fan and will always be. The trio of Ash Misty and Brook will always be my favorite. Only female character so far that I love and that is Misty.

I grew up with the original series, and there was still a lot to like with the writing in the Sinnoh, Kalos, and Alola seasons for me. Every series has had its ups and downs.

I don't think Misty was ruined as a character, I just think they have not done her justice. There's been no satisfying ending to complete her story. Maybe because the writers want to leave her available in case Ash ever "grows up". 🙄 I've been a PokeShipper since the beginning. I think I cried when they sent Misty back to Cerulean city after Johto. I tried to watch the Hoenn episodes, but when they changed production companies and the 4Kids voice actors were switched to the new Pokemon company voice actors, I stopped following the show entirely. Thanks for showing what happened since then. Maybe someday, every PokeShipper will get the ending we've been waiting for. But I'm not holding my breath.

While Misty is a controversial character and not so liked anymore I think what I disliked about her later appearances was her lack of tomboyish streak and temper. Yeah I actually liked Misty's temper, namely what it was formed from. Because she herself was a rookie like Ash when she started and growing up compared lesser to others will cause some amount of anger, it was a defense mechanism, hence why she would get angry whenever her vanity or skill was questioned. As someone who also struggles with inferiority this is actually relatable. Don't get me wrong the show could've done it much better at times, because they didn't always portray it the best. But I think it separates her from the other females because you don't have to be nice to be a good person, the main issue was the writers not using her temper in a compelling way, or hinting at her insecurities, just never going through with it. I disliked how after Johto she just defaulted to the same overly soften spoken disposition as the other females. Because I always found her flaws made her stick out compared to the others even if the writing didn't always do her justice. Even though she isn't my favorite female character I do miss when she was allowed to show more sides to her that wasn't just overly bubbly or soft spoken. It's also why I liked when May got arrogant after some time, but then grew from that.

I wouldn't say she was "ruined" so much as "wasted" The Hoenn episodes featuring her return had way too much stuff going on that took the focus away from her, so I think things might've gone better if the episode had been about them meeting up, interacting and reminiscing and stuff, and not...all of that of that other stuff, which could've been made into its own separate episode instead, especially with how Misty got to have a better return in Sun and Moon that helped show off her character a lot better than her episodes in Hoenn which weren't about her but other stuff going on during her return, which again took the focus away from her and made it so she couldn't do or show as much as she could've Just my take on this, from what all I've heard in this video

As far as I know, what ruined Misty's character was the massive and unexpected popularity of the Pokemon franchise. I think it was covered by Did You Know Gaming? in their Lugia episode, that the Mewtwo movie was supposed to be the finale for the series and that they planned for Ash and Misty to have a daughter at the end of the movie. Even in the Lugia movie you can clearly see that she had very strong feelings for Ash. But the anime became super popular worldwide, so the franchise owners decided to switch gears and make it as long as possible. They decided that Ash should remain, but Misty had to go in order to bring representation for the new region's characters (particularly the then obligatory female travel companion). Thanks for covering the other episodes though! I missed a lot of gen3 to 5 anime episodes.

Misty had so much wasted potential, it actually pisses me off lol they could have done so much!! Imagine if she would have kept all her Pokémon & trained/evolved them! By the end of Johto she could have had Starmie, Politoed, Kingdra, Corsola, Seaking, & Psyduck(they wouldn’t ever evolve her Psyduck) Or they could have had her catch more Pokémon, like Tentacruel since she’s mentioned how much she likes it or even a Gyarados during her travels with Ash instead of after. But no, they just made her a babysitter/cheerleader instead.

I’ve heard one of the directors or writers didn’t like her, not sure if that was true..but either way, she was “ruined” once the creators stopped caring about her. The anime doubled down as promotional material for the games and series rather than about continuing the story it had established thus far. The parting of the 3 main characters signifies to me the end of the original creative show and the beginning of the more promotional focused show. It’s why Ash can keep resetting every new series..it isn’t fully the same show anymore and neither are the characters.

To be fair, Diamond and Pearl went back to the creative side with Dawn. The reason why Dawn's victory against May in the Wallace Cup was so cathartic is because Dawn didn't have any plot armour. She had to fight her way up without the writers giving her the special treatment that they usually give to main characters, which was emphasised when she failed in the appeal round of 2 contests in a row. During May's time on the show, it was unthinkable for her to fail in the appeal round of a single contest, never mind 2 in a row, and this was despite the fact that some of her performances, like Skitty botching Blizzard and having to resort to juggling, were arguably weaker than the performances that Dawn failed to win the judges over with. Dawn had to prove herself through sheer determination to get better, so she 100% earned her victory against May whereas May frequently relied on plot armour. That's why Dawn is Ash's most well written companion, with only Lillie coming close due to how well the Sun and Moon writers handled her PTSD. Speaking of Lillie, she's another display of the writers taking risks and this time, they were tackling something much more mature than mere failure. And this happened during the Sun and Moon series, which everybody assumed would be childish crap because of the art style. However, the writers tackled a severe psychological condition and managed to pull it off. Lillie's recovery included at least one major relapse when a repressed memory of Silvally, whom she mistakenly believed had attacked her, rendered her unable to touch any Pokemon, including Snowy, even after all the progress she'd made. Honestly, if Lillie had a better English voice actress than Laurie Hymes, she'd be on Dawn's level in terms of character, perhaps even higher. That kind of character arc needs a voice actress who has an undercurrent of fear during any Pokemon interactions and can give a hint of tragedy to the more comedic moments of Lillie freaking out, so that people actually feel bad for laughing at her. It would help to show that, although it's often framed in a comedic manner due to this still being a children's show at heart, Lillie's fear of Pokemon isn't because she's a wimp. It's because of PTSD, a very serious psychological condition that some people have killed themselves to escape from. Unfortunately, Laurie Hymes' voice was too grating so it's better to listen to the Japanese version. Getting back to Diamond and Pearl, Paul is also a display of that series' creative streak because although he was heavily based on Silver, he's still unique within the context of the anime. He challenged Ash in ways that no other rival could and even during his one episode return in Journeys, he was still doing so despite having mellowed significantly since we last saw him. Even Gary was just an obstacle for Ash to overcome. Paul actually challenged Ash intellectually and emotionally due to their drastically different training styles. Plus Diamond and Pearl introduced one of the series' most underrated villains. Pokemon Hunter J. I wish they'd brought her back for the Latios and Latias episode in Journey's because we don't know for sure that she died and the hunter who was actually in that episode used her gimmicks of riding a pseudo-legendary and turning Pokemon into stone.

Johto arc's episode length was plenty of time to do more with Misty and Brock along with use new villains. Misty and Brock could have caught more Pokémon to add to their teams and had their own goodbye to older Pokémon. They could have had Misty catch some the water Pokémon from Johto made some female friends or had her own rival such as the kid who liked fire types.

well, i think misty was and still is the most perfect character in the whole show, she had a personality and goals way before meeting Ash which means her development didn't depend on him but on the experience she got from that journey. Having said that, i think her character was evolving beatifully during the original series, her evolution was so good that possibly could have helped other characters to evolve as well like Ash for example, the feelings she had for him were growing strong.. too strong to be ignorared even by Ash. But like the show was only for kids, and the company wanted to sell videogames they took away the only character who could have risked the "ash never aged" thing. Actually at this point of the series as an OG fan i would rather watch a series about Misty and her work as a gymleader than Ash and his never ending journey. C'mon Misty alone was able to reconstruct her whole gym, which implies that she knows about desing, knows how to use the money very well, knows about marketing, etc... actually now tha i think about it, it was her feelings for Ash what was holding back all of her potential, she liked him and she didn't want to leave him but once she was forced to do it she became her true self, that's why Misty's character doesn't seem to fit in the new series, because she is now so much more that only catching pokemon and traveling the world. So if for some unexpected reason she comes back as a regular character the whole storyline would have to change, giving us much more mature personalities in every character and much more mature stories. so, i don't think Misty was ruined, i think the show is ruined because now it can not handle a character so complex and well created like her.

I don't really take issue with this particular arc, honestly. It *was* closure for Misty's arc with Togepi, in that we saw Togepi evolve out of needing Misty as a caretaker and Misty let it go so it could be a caretaker itself. While I think the Mirage Kingdom is a bit goofy, Hanson isn't a bad villain, and the arc showcases a couple of Pokemon I quite like, Ninjask and Shedinja, with the later being a formidable opponent even if the anime didn't really understand how Wonder Guard works. Misty does also show up during the first half of the Battle Frontier arc prior to TPI taking over the dub; she just kind of does her thing with the party and then goes on her way again. It didn't really feel final any more, as if the writers understood they'd be bringing her back again, which they did.

I actually think Misty became more interesting as a character after she left Ash. As an adult watching the first two series of pokemon, I was really disappointed in how they used Misty. Misty is supposed to be a gym leader, one of only 8 people in an entire region to have that position, she should be a top tier, if at least a competent trainer, only for the show to never have her battle outside of flicking team rocket away. I know they probably didn't want to take away the attention on Ash becoming a strong trainer, but Misty more or less just became the tom boyish friend that makes sassy comments and sometimes battles. After leaving Ash, she finally became what she was meant to be, an independent intimidating gym leader that was strong enough to train a mega gyrados. While I do think the anime didn't know how to use her besides an easter egg after she left Johto, I find Misty to be much more interesting when she does appear, especially recently with the end of Ash's journey.

I feel like saying that misy was RUINED is kind of a stretch. She's still an amazing character, just a huge part about her that we knew for so long had moved on. The Pokemon characters DO grow and develop over time and you may not like that personally, but that doesn't inherently make them ruined. Misty takes on duties as a gym leader, Brock becomes a Pokemon doctor, etc. It's kind of a fact of life, that as time passes people gain new responsibilities and so they put those first.

@@thecriticalghost4626 As long as Misty didn’t come back around the same time Dawn got hers (so earlier), Togekiss isn’t rushed to be introduced before the series is close to ending (I feel like it was, with the whole Dawn lookalike story and stuff). Maybe have Togetic evolve in Misty’s first 2 parter and then no need for Dawn to have one, Ambipom gets to compete in the Grand Festival (she deserved to imo) and then leave after if she still was to. Otherwise just have Dawn catch something else to equal out her team or whatever. Just my opinion and ideas though

Met, I didn't mind the Hoenn reunion episodes for Misty. But I can understand why you & others don't like it much; with the whole new area & villains & unnecessary 2 part just for her Togepi to evolve. On a side note, I always thought her Hoenn clothes were blue in the stomach region not red lol. I myself always thought of her Hoenn clothes as a 2 piece outfit on top a red piece swimsuit. Which would suit a water type specialist. Just wear some clothes over some swimming/diving esc clothing. But disappointed Misty & Brock didn't get new clothing for the Alola region. I still remember that episode when rudy asks misty to date him and she thinks a lot and ends up shouting at ash to defeat rudy in the battle. it shows how much she liked him and how she supported him throughout. in every battle, every loss she was there with him. i truly believe brock and misty were the best things happened to pokemon. they both were really good characters who should have appeared more often. now lets see what they have in those 11 upcoming episodes, i really hope they express ash misty and brocks feelings more this time and they get to spend greater time together. and if ash is really getting married i wish its misty but i have no hopes i know ill just be crying at the end.

What really ruined her was the fact that writers didn’t know what to do with her tbh and despite not being my favorite written pokegirl she still stands out to me for her personality. Although her recent appearances were definitely not my favorite. It’s a kids shows but considering how big it is, writers should be more careful with how they write their side characters. The only that has been taken care of is Serena (not hate towards,her I like all the pokegirls) and only for her stupid popularity and it’s so unfair for the characters that have been with us for years. The rest have been sacrificed only to make her seem as superior and they have been making poor decisions on how they should be reintroduced. Justo to show 0 progress and make them seem more childish

Ash's character wasn't drastically changed in Hoenn. He'd just grown more arrogant, largely because he'd finally defeated Gary and didn't have to deal with feeling inferior to him anymore. Furthermore, he was dealing with younger companions and taking more of a mentor role with May in particular. Unova Ash on the other hand regressed into a joke. It could have worked if Unova took place directly after Kanto or even the Orange Islands but after everything Ash went through since then, especially in Sinnoh, there's no way he could have lost to Trip until at least their third battle (I don't care if Pikachu couldn't use electricity because Iron Tail and Quick Attack are more than enough to deal with Snivy). He also wouldn't be stupid enough to not been prepared for Elisa, especially after making that mistake with Brawly back when it actually MADE SENSE for his character to be overconfident, or any of the other amateur mistakes he made throughout Unova.

I think the problem with Misty is the Kanto writer’s lack of knowledge of Pokemon starting out. Type match ups meant shit, Pokemon learn moves that they shouldn’t or not at the proper level, and more importantly: the gym leaders themselves. They’re such a departure from their original iteration, they might as well be completely different characters from their game counterparts. Lt Surge is a doofus instead of a hardened Pokemon war veteran, Erika is a bitchy fashionista instead of a calm and serene gardener, Sabrina was a horror movie reject instead of a powerful psychic (they even got her gym order wrong) and they couldn’t even do the Giovanni fight justice (they didn’t). This problem extends to Misty, who was mostly just the second straight man to Ash’s wise guy act. None of her tomboyish flair, none of her expertise as a Water-type gym leader, none of her passion for Pokemon. Even her reason for travelling with Ash is flimsy. She wants to be a great trainer and even likes Ash, but alone they’re not very good reasons. Not compared to Brock, who has the breeding aspect down (Even if he has never had two Pokemon make an egg together. Weird), which is why he stuck around longer. They managed to get their act together around Johto/Hoenn and start making some interesting characters. But by the time they did, they wrote themselves into a corner with Misty’s character. Anything other than returning to the Cerulean City gym would have been out of character and weird. She did good with catching/evolving some awesome Pokemon, but they never did anything with it. The only time they did was with the Whirl Islands arc, but again, departure from the main games. Her catching Gyarados and being cool with it in her absence was very cool, but the writers want to strike the right balance for Ash and his friends to be strong to take on gym leaders and weak enough to be caught up in Team Rocket’s gags, hence why Ash doesn’t bring his high level team to a new region (Though Pikachu certainly gets downgraded). All in all, Misty is a fantastic trainer held back by shitty writers who don’t know what to do with her. This is the same writers who couldn’t let go of Ash until very recently. If you want to see a Misty that lives up to her potential, read the Pokemon Adventures manga. She appears much less than her anime counterpart, but she is an awesome trainer, friend to Red and so much so that Suicune, a Pokemon that was looking for the worthy trainer to use him in the final battle against the big bad, chose Misty to be its trainer. She even defeats Whitney’s Miltank in a 1v1.

Misty didn’t get actual development until Master Quest. First she was following Ash for her bike back then the writers gave her Togepi. Misty needed a solid goal from the start or more episodes centered around her. Maybe replace Lorelei as the elite 4 member?

It´s not about one character. It´s about the entire show. The show started (based on the videogame) like the story where the hero goes from nobody to making his dreams come true (or saves the world, etc). Willy Fog was about Willy Fog making the journey around the world in 80 days. Touch was about Tatsuya Uesugi - the lazy and dumb twin - becoming the baseball star. Nadia was about Nadia and Jean having a fantastic adventure, saving the world and falling in love. Pokemon was (back in April 1997) about Ash starting like an ordinary kid and becoming the Pokemon master better than anyone before him. It should have ended with Ash becoming the master, and in a few seasons, not after 20, 30, 40,... years (if he wins one league now there´s so many regions, it´s as "big" success as Rocky Balboa winning the match at the beginning of the first movie). And every other main character should´ve had stayed with him, like in the other shows. If they wanted adaptations of other regions, they could´ve done it the Super Sentai way (each new region is a different universe). But NO, they didn´t give a damn about it , and since Johto they changed it into neverending region - hopping. And in 2002 they started kicking main characters off for good, changed the show into soap opera (wasn´t one Dragon Ball more than enough?!), and killed it. Misty was much more lucky than Brock or Rockets (they didn´t know what to do with them since half season 1, maybe even before the seizure episode), because she had some character arc and development. But after season 2 they didn´t know what to do with her. I could count episodes focusing on her on fingers of one hand. Maybe even Webby in original DuckTales had more episodes about her than Misty since season 3. And the last thing - relationship between Ash and Misty could´ve stayed purely kid friendship (like Huey, Dewey, Louie and Webby), and anything in the future could´ve been an entirely different story ("answered" only by fanfictions). But they made them Ranma and Akane of Pokemon. After the 2nd movie there was not any other option - Ash and Misty should have gotten together in the end. And what did they do? They kicked her out. The show is definitely dead since late 2002, and now it´s nothing more than anime Days of our lives.
