Weaving for Differential Shrinkage - wool and acrylic

Welcome to my studio! This is an invitation to watch my processes as I try out new things (new to me) in my weaving and dyeing studio. Today I weave a series of four samples with wool and acrylic. The purpose is to vigorously wet finish the samples to encourage shrinking in the wool areas, giving a ruffled effect. The acrylic areas should not shrink. Let's see if this works! I made a 48 inch checked blanket. the warp and weft were both alternating thick stripes of variegated handspun, and stripes of this old, ugly, scratchy plastic yarn I got on clearance back in high-school for 99 cents. I thought I wasted a ton of yarn when I was done washing. But I laid it out and came back and noticed I made a bubble fabric! Cheers.

Great idea! Do you think that if you used undyed wool yarn, you would get more shrinkage? I mainly weave with superwash sock weight yarn that I dye before weaving, so not much shrinkage occurs. I have some BFL/silk dk weight yarn that I want to combine with tencel in both the warp and weft. Hopefully I will get the same effect.

Hi Im a beginning weaver and I hear so much bad press on acrylic, does it really stretch as bad as they say...I want something cheap to weave with until I advance to wool

There are different kinds of acrylic. I would not use the type that is meant for hand knitting. It is stretchy and not meant to be put under the tension that a loom requires (I'm sure it can be done, but it's not recommended). The acrylic I used in this video is on cones and is aimed at machine knitters. It has worked very well for me and I recommend that for an inexpensive option.
