A look at a Webasto wiring loom and how this fits a and connects up to a Thermo Top C Webasto Diesel water heater. Also a test run of the heater prior to fitting in the coming weeks on my Tug style Narrowboat to provide hot water via a calorifier.

This was useful! Good to see how simple the system actually is! Do you know if this thermo top c has two power levels? Like does it run on half power when it has reached high temperature, or does it run full or off only?

Quick question please. I want to replace my now defunct Mikuni MX60 heater with a Webasto heater. However, the Mikuni is 24v (has a 24v supply already laid on) and it looks like all the Webasto's run on 12v. How can I get around this please?
@BramleyProductions
@BramleyProductions 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, I think you can buy the Webasto in a 24 Volt version. I'm not 100% sure on that but I'm sure I have read that mind that was some time ago when I read that. Now in converting a 12-volt unit Webasto to run on a 24 Volt supply! I would have to consult my friend who knows a lot more about these heaters than I do. I have always only ever fitted 12-volt versions of this Webasto heater. Also, the Eberspacher D2 warm air heaters these have all been 12 volts. I will drop him an email to see if he knows if you can do this, I would assume there would be some way around this for sure. Thanks. Kev.

So I hope to start this next week work has been a bit delayed as I care for and elderly parent so my time as been somewhat limited this summer but the installation is coming and I will try to video some of it and how it all works out and goes together so yep its coming soon! Thanks for asking and hopefully all being well next week I'm going to start at last the rewire and re plumb all took a lot longer!!! I have the calorifier all fitted and this works well off the shore power 240v electric with the 1kw immersion heater that is fitted to this as well so I do have hot water at the boat again which is lovely Thanks Kev.

Hi. Thank you. Very useful video about the loom upon which, as you say, there's very little on the interweb. On my Top C loom there are two relay-like objects in the bank with the fuses. One is obviously a standard type of auto relay and which I understand, however, beside it, there is another relay-like object which also plugs into a relay socket but this one is much taller than the standard auto relay. There is not a single marking on this thing anywhere and its 'pins' are very sulphated which maybe behind why my unit does not now function. Do you or does anyone know what on earth this thing is? I am expecting to have to disassemble the loom with a meter in hand to determin the disposition is of everything but if you can save me any spaghetti teasing, I will be so grateful. Again, thank you for the video.

Hi, that is a tricky one for sure! I have to say I'm just very much a DIY amateur with these heaters I have never seen a set up like you say you have on yours normally you just get the relay and fuses the relay I have not used as that is there if the heater is used on a vehicle and so powers or goes to the vehicle fan. So sorry I'm not much help there is a wiring diagram here see the link and that gives no notes on any other parts either so sorry I have not been much help! @@BramleyProductions Well, I finally got at the Webasto loom and have opened out as much as I can reach (Lol. 6' 3" tall and round!). The 'extra' relay is indeed a timer relay. Professor Google says it can be set from 0 to 150 minutes, is Polish and gave me a '.pdf' which had an English translation!! When removed and viewed very close up, I could just make out embossed terminals 1 to 5. I also found a faded old label in the 'hidden' side and by chasing the wiring back, I found it switched both the heater itself and the water pump on using the black 'signal' wire on the loom as the trigger. I stripped out the relays and the unused bit of loom for relay switched vehicle HVAC equipment. Unfortunately, my meter testing found that the timer is defective but by bypassing it, I got the heater to power up second go after a lockout reset. Much happier now but must withdraw and await replacement parts. Geoff Smith.

@@BramleyProductions I have now determined that this loom is unlike yours in that the cabling for the water pump is routed to the fuse block to attach to the 'former' timeing relay. I cannot get to enough of the loom to take that lead back closer to the pump and burner unit so I will re-instate the conventional relay and use the trigger wire with a relay socket connector 'T'ed into the cable to energise a coil switching in the water pump from a power lead from an unused fuse holder. I found the yellow diagnostic wire which was terminated on one side of yet another unused fuse holder. Going to look a whole lot leaner by the time I have finished, IMHO. Best wishes. Geoff.

You said you were having some issues with air in the heater, if you install this into the boat, how do you ensure there wont be air in the circut?
@BramleyProductions
@BramleyProductions 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Many thanks for your kind comments, Yes I have heard others have this air problem re the Webasto pump what I have seen done is on where you connect up the flow side of the water heater hose on the Webasto is to put a small length of heater hose then in 19 mm copper fit one of those auto air bleeders have a look at the pictures here to see what I mean. www.canalworld.net/forums/index.php?/topic/87746-webasto-thermo-top-c-stopped-working/ I'm not sure I'm going to do this as remember you will need a header tank somewhere higher than the heater to fill the system and keep it topped up and also my small radiator does have an air bleed vent as well and I'm going to try to run the heater hose slightly down or level thereabouts from the Webasto unit to the calorifier but if I still have air issues re the Webasto pump! Well then I may put a vent like in the pictures re-link above I think its very much trial and see! Hope that maybe help Kev.

@@BramleyProductions I think i see what you're talking about, assuming that the air will rise into that copper part above the pipe as the water goes through, and then you can turn the nozzle to let it escape?

Yep, you have got it! Sometimes here in the UK, those auto bleed valves are used on central heating systems they do work automatically letting any air that rises to that point out!
