Thanks I must look for one of these Minnow Fish carbs and try it. Or possibly use two? I currently run a 1 3/4 inch SU carb on my 1600 single port VW street engine (ported heads, W100 cam, light flywheel etc etc) and despite the naysayers it runs well. Come to think of it I have a 1275 A series that needs a carb too....

Used a 1.5 minnow fish and fast road cam from Bob back in the late 60's early 70's with great results. Car was an Austin 1300 and it produced in excess of 70BHP at the wheels on Bobs rolling road. Excellent setup, the fish has been used on several cars since always with great results. I still have the carb and I would love to find a reasonable priced 1275 engined car to put it on.

When you moved the Fish carb between cars, have you had to recalibrate it much?
@robertvirtue7133 ай бұрын
@@andiminthegarage7081 Since it was always being moved between 1275 A series engines not too much adjustment was required. Usually just a slight tweek to the mixture and the slow running.

The Argyll GT looks like a grown up Clan Crusader, the front end has many styling cues from that car in particular, with the back end slightly less so. The problem with the Webers is that they have a poor progression circuit such that they are often likened to a switch - all or nothing. A far better option is the Dellorto DLRA carb, which has a much better progression circuit that improves mid range torque and even better still when its combined with the update kit that substitutes a spray bar instead of the secondary venturi to aid flow and fuel dispersion/atomisation. This extra flow and atomisation improves mid-range torque that results in quicker pick up out of the corners. Dells are know for better outputs than the IDFs on a size for size and with the update kit you can confidently drop a size to improve bottom end torque whilst still retaining top end power. The Fish carb certainly was a good alternative back in the day but things move on and I don't think the Fish has? The Fish shown here concerns me somewhat in that the flow looks to be restricted by the whole butterfly arrangement with thick spindle and chunky brackets. On a conventional carb the butterfly can be slimmed down substantially for even more flow but the hollow Fish spindle looks to prevent that.

I agree about Webbers vs, DRLA. Used the latter on a Ford Escort and it had good progression where the Weber is more like mechanical fuel injection on a drag car: All or nothing.

@@martinharris5017 Lotus used Dells in preference to Webers on the Elite/Esprit/Eclat range with the 2.2lire engine despite having a history of using Webers previously and as we know, Lotus only do things to aid performance.

With regard to the butterfly, my understanding is 😅 shape and size is instrumental in promoting good atomisation of the fuel in conjunction with the holes in the throttle spindle. I remember Bob saying that his primary concern (with both the carbs and forced induction) was the quality of the charge over the quantity. I believe loss of flow with the "chunky" butterfly is offset by the efficiency of the system. Hopefully, I'll get them running, and we will know for sure 😂

@@andiminthegarage7081 Atomisation is a key component but you need to fill the cylinders to get the most power and that comes with good flow. This is why fuel injection scores so well in that the inlet tract is optimised for flow and then the fuel is sprayed into it in as fine a mist as can be reasonably achieve (there is also an optimum fuel droplet size) One of the points I was trying to make is that as two chokes are allowed in some versions of Formula Vee and it appears that the option is a pair of Fishes or an IDF Weber then it would seem to me that a better alternative than the IDF is the DRLA with the update kit.

I ran a Reece Fish on my mini for a while (could not afford a Minnow). VERY easy to install and tune. It was brilliant in fine weather but if cool and/or wet, it iced up really badly. The result was around 8mpg.

I've heard icing can be a problem. 😮

Will you have them on for Donnington? It looks so simple compared to a Weber. Very interesting design.
@andiminthegarage70813 ай бұрын
Unfortunately, not. I had some piston and bore damage to repair, which took up time. To be honest, it's a slightly bigger task than I had imagined 🤣🤣
