U.B Funkeys figures are definitely derivative of vinyl figures and art toys: A unique blank slate with different customisations that all look cool and make you want to collect them. It's a concept I genuinely like, especially for the collecting aspect, but I can tell it was more a hassle to buy the pod and different figures to unlock new things with than it was to just buy one toy and have all features accessible that way, and that's probably why it didn't take off.

@@candicraveingcloude2822 Sure, but those bonus features sometimes are essentially the same as what you'd get from toys to life. fun detail about the bearville cafe roleplay! i distinctly remember having the option to “work” a couple selected jobs, like cashier/teacher/server/etc (that’s what the blue uniforms and stars over people’s heads were indicating). your actions and chat options would become limited to whatever you were working as, which is why they all had perfect grammar lmao. every workable job area was staffed exclusively by other players, which made it really cute. i can’t recall if you got paid for working, though i think if you did good enough over multiple shifts, you’d get certain items as a reward. i hopped between webkinz, lpso, and bearville as a kid, so this video was basically like crack for me LMAO

I will never forget I had gotten the shining star dragon @ an old block buster. Bought it because I loved dragons and not for the online gimmick. It wasn't until a year later that I realized I could set up an account for the toy only for the website to constantly tell me "too many people are signing up right now." So I never had the joy of playing this knock off, but the stuffed animal itself was my all time favorite for years. So it has a special place in my heart even if they didn't let me play the game

I had a couple-weeks stay at a children's hospital as a kid and my room had a computer in it. This was the height of the Webkinz craze and my dad wanted to get me one to cheer me up, but they were sold out everywhere. A nurse had told him that the hospital sold Webkinz in the gift shop, but it turned out to be Shining Stars. He got me one anyway bc he thought they were cute and figured it was something I could look into to take my mind off things. I named that Star "OUCH" played it for a few minutes, then logged back into Webkinz. (I do still cherish my Lion Shining Star tho, all these years later).

The Dinner Club meals are definitely high on my list of fictional foods that look unnecessarily good 👀 Edit, I remember loving the webisodes as a kid, but… GOD, that dog’s voice makes me wanna rip my ears off. Also gotta mention that while the American Girl MMO makes sense for what the brand is all about, Little Me didn’t want ANYTHING to do with a school-themed game 😭 Definitely didn’t help my perception of AG as a “boring” toy line, lmao.

I was pretty happy when Ty launched 2.0 as I was one of the unlucky kids whose single webkinz had a code that'd been sniped before I could play. I actually still have all three of my 2.0 beanies (two pink cats and one black cat). Some bizarre memories of the website include: the fact that the chat system wouldn't let you type numbers as part of the filter system, but would let you ask people how old they were as one of prewritten questions, so we had to find workarounds (I remember feeling very clever saying "dozen" to mean 12), and one of the songs that played when you decorated your room was "Life is a Highway". The 2008-ness of it all... I was also a Snootz hater even at that age; somehow his voice is even more grating than I remember. I'd also completely forgotten about the Bratz virtual world, despite having one of those, too (the purple one with the panda). I guess that speaks to how much I actually played it.

Webkinz was obviously my favorite and the GOAT, but I was also OBSESSED with buildabearville. I wish I could go back and play it again so badly. I agree, it’s visually so appealing. What I adore is that it looks like all the backgrounds are hand painted like it’s a storybook. There was always SO much to do on there. Like Webkinz, the longer you played, the more rewarding it felt, because you’d collect rare items and new things were always popping up. They also had a whole ass soundtrack??? Game recognize game For me, if you want me to get hooked on your Webkinz knock-off, you gotta have amazing mini games. And buildabearville did for SURE. Similarly, I think that’s why I enjoyed Shining Stars tbh!! I never had high expectations for it like I did for Webkinz, but I feel like I remember enjoying the mini games and I appreciated that they at least had a theme to the whole website. I like stars and space themes. Funnily enough, I don’t remember any of the features that you mentioned in the video!! I think I just played games and collected stars??

There was also a bonus feature on the DVD where there were 3 different ways the Shining Stars released Monkey and defeated Dark Star and there were also animated bloopers which I personally thought were very funny, I wish they still did that nowadays. And a little slideshow you could watch of all the clip art of the Shining Stars next to their IRL plushie in a fashion show type setting over some super generic pop music. There was also a music section where you could click on what piece of music, that hadn't been featured in the movie mind you, you wanted to listen to, most of it was your generic 2000's pop music but I remember there being a piece of surprisingly sultry music (Idk why they decided to feature that on a movie for kids) I don't know where the dvd is now since it's been a while since I watched it, but if I do find it, I might try to record it and upload the current lost media to KZbin.

I remember be-bratz. It was kinda fun, but kinda blank. I held on to the usb-access key thing for years until I lost it. I vaguely remember the commercials being all like "You can wear it as a necklace and wow all your peers with how cool and exclusive you are."

As a child I was briefly obessed with trying to find a way to play with my 2009 american girl doll on Innerstar University. There was no way to retroactively get a code, and there was no way I was ever going to be able to afford a second doll just to gain full access to a game.

I used to have a Rescue Pets! Watching this video just unlocked a lost childhood memory! One of the site's unique gimmicks was each pet registered had to have a unique name (like neopets). I had one white dog pet. And after an hour of trying to come up with a name only to be told "that pet name is already taken!" I ended up naming her immy (lowercase first letter)

I think an honorary mention that most people don’t know about is My E Pets!! I’d love to see you do a video or talk about that bizarre website and toy brand that seems to have faded from existence during what I can only assume was its peak popularity! There were unfinished parts of the map that literally never got done because it got discontinued! So strange. When I wasn’t on webkinz or go girls games I was on My E Pets!

Tamagotchi Connection was another virtual world for your pet. It had codes that you could get from the site to input into your toy, like a reverse of Webkins. And whatever evolution your Tama was on your physical device, if you sent your little Tama friend/pet into TamaTown, by way of a generated code, you would see that character in the town. My sister was all about Webkinz, and I was all about them Tamagotchis.

UUhh thank you for unlocking a memory! I forgot that I had one of the Rescue Pets e-pets! The style was very charming, but there wasn't nearly as much to do as Webkinz. All i remember about that game was there wasn't a ton of decorations for your house so i just ended up buying like 30 of the pet beds.

20:40 Oh hey, I actually had a few Seapals! Ones I had were the pink anemonefish and the bannerfish ones, might've had a couple others but those were the ones I remember (might've also had the pufferfish one?). Don't remember what the actual game was like though, but from the footage in this video, maybe that's for the best (I... probably only got the Seapals because I really liked fish/marine life in general when I was younger)

God, I really wish we had more screenshots and videos to Beanie Babies 2.0, the shops and games were my favorite things in the world when I played them as a small child, and not a whole lot got archived about it, at least to my knowledge. I'd adore if a bunch of now adult Beanie Babies fans made a 3.0 version remaster trying their best to remake the game from scratch- though referencing what little was archived and everyone's memories. (And yes, that includes the horryfying desert shop bunny that went actually insane to the point the shop had to close for a second as a "gag." That was TERRYFYING to me as a kid. Certainly one way to make me remember to carry enough money to buy things from the shops tho.)

I don’t want to think about the number of those I accumulated over the years I played as a kid, but the visual and audio experience that was UB Funkeys still lives in my brain, and playing again last year it still holds up.
