Clement Attlee had a knack of telling people what to do and making them think it was their idea. He wasn’t flashy but his mind was unmatched. His role with Churchill during wartime should never be underestimated. Certainly, old Winston knew it.

Churchill deeply respected Attlee. Whenever someone tried to bring up that joke about Attlee arriving at Downing St and there was an empty taxi , Churchill let that person know in no uncertain terms , that Attlee was a decent and Honourable public servant who supported his country in her time of need

Can’t understand some of the comments hating on Attlee and calling him a joke. He helped build the coalition against Joseph Stalin, was responsible for appointing Aneurin Bevin creating the NHS, created our wonderful national parks, gave housing to those who couldn’t afford any at the time, saved our country from a financial Dunkirk after the war, helped convince Churchill not to make peace with the Nazis before the war started and changed this country dramatically and for the better in many ways. Sure the economy would eventually become his Achilles heal but by no means was he a joke. Much better than most prime ministers!

He helped convince Churchill not to make peace with the Nazis before the war??? Churchill didn't need persuading of that. He wasn't prime minister before the war. And how do you make peace with someone when a war hasn't started yet? What peace is there to make in peacetime?

Clement Attlee was a great political mind and very effective in managing egotistical and larger than life colleagues in his cabinet, nearly all of whom thought they could do a better job than him as PM. Truly a modest and self-effacing man, Attlee demonstrated that having a core of principles and determination is more important than charisma or image or style. In this age of television and the internet, though, Attlee would never achieve high office today.

And yet, a lot of the policies he implemented were eventually reversed(the mass nationalisation scheme for one - and that probably did massive damage to Britain's economy), then there's the fact that the NHS hasn't been replicated elsewhere in the world and other countries have better healthcare outcomes, NATO and his military interventions(Korean war) - I now have come to see in a negative light, what with giving rise to US imperialism and the UK assisting in that.

Attlee - the man who covered the country in council estates, every town was then surrounded by estates. Whereas before, rent-payers had been spread throughout society they were now all packed in together in council ghettos. Councils were now the biggest landowners in the world in Attlee's great socialist ideology. Thatcher attempted to rectify this by forcing councils to sell their properties to tenants if they so wished. The ghastly council houses are still with us, however, and still a blot on the landscape.
