How could they write so openly in their diaries? People were always capable of snooping. This always interests me. I'm sure these were her deepest secrets.
@annstillwell7302 ай бұрын
Diaries were a big thing then. Poeple didn't have pictures to look back on only their daily obsurbances if written down. Victoria famously had one. Relatives would often edit out the compromising stuff before they were archived in most cases.
@skontheroadАй бұрын
Unfortunately, yes. Nonetheless, like you said, Victoria wrote and recorded EVERYTHING! And passed her diary habit onto many of her kids and grandkids. Luckily! Even the Romanovs kept diaries! I just find it absurd that they portrayed the bride enjoying her wedding night! Impossible! @@annstillwell730

My mother was a teacher and she has never spoken with me about sex, or anything that had sexual implications. That was very shamefull for her and all of her life had she such attitude. For instance, menstruation was something bad and disastrous. . . I grew up in spite of that as a very normal person . Now is she 88. Nothing changed.

Poor Isabella. It's must've been so hard for her, being a lesbian, married to a man by force. I've read some extracts from her diaries from that time. She was very unhappy, but she did have some good times. Her husband was deeply in love with her and Isabella was deeply in love with her sister-in-law. 🥲💝
@tracys1692 ай бұрын
I fully empathize with her. She's hidden her true self from her husband and her mother-in-law the Empress because she didn't want to disappoint them, but she's never quite fallen for her husband despite him being in love with her...
@Lily1127channel2 ай бұрын
Yeah, she basically hid everything about herself to please him and the court. She obeyed him and pretended to be intellectually inferior to him, because she knew he liked women that way, he thought women were inferior to men. When she was actually a very very smart and intelligent woman. And she actually thought that men and women are intellectually equal, she was an early feminist according to her secret writings. She hid everything about her true self to win his love. And he loved her, but he never really knew her.

How do we know she was a lesbien?
@judymartin99802 ай бұрын
She may not have been a lesbian. It was usual in the 1700's for good friends to write letters to each other professing their deep love and devotion. Isabella had fallen in love with a duke when she was younger. Her father decided that this man was not good enough for her and refused a marriage between them. Rumors had it that he had this duke murdered. Maria Christina's marriage to Albert Casimir, Duke of Teschen, was a love match. Albert was a good friend of Isabella's, and she helped with the relationship between him and Maria Christina. So were they lesbian lovers? Who knows. Neither had any history of such before, and in Christina's case, afterwards. We cannot judge what was acceptable and encouraged written and spoken sentiments from the 18th-19th centuries between good friends using modern standards. These sentiments rarely meant that a sexual relationship existed between 2 people.

@@judymartin9980 So you're assuming that she's not a lesbian or bisexual or anything on the basis that no sexual relationship happened?

How accurate is this
@Lily1127channel2 ай бұрын
Well, we don't know how accurate the representation of the wedding night itself is. But we know that he fell in love with her soon. She sought to win his favor, she behaved exactly the way she thought he would want her to behave. She obeyed her and she pretended he was intellectually her superior. She hid her true self so that she did her duty, won his love and care. So he loved her deeply, but she could never truly love him back. She was actually into women and not men. And she was a very very smart and intelligent woman who was not Joseph's intellectual inferior, on the contrary, but she hid that to make him feel better and win his favor. Actually, she was an early feminist who had many secret writings about equal rights, but she always kept that part of her secret as well.

I would say, pretty accurate, one girls at that time knew little to nothing about the mechanics of sex. Married to a stranger, you barely met than expected to have sex? If he did not like you? How pleasant could it be with some stranger on top of you, fumbling you and straight into penetration of a dry, unprepared Miss Flu Flu. It would be very painful and emotionally humiliating trauma a girl would endure. A wife was duty, a mistress was for pleasure. Whether the mistress got any actual pleasure is debatable, but were more adept at acting despite a lousy lover who went for speed rather than content. It is no wonder, many women had a loathing of sex, their husbands and childbirth. 2 minutes of fumbling under your nightgown to …. Really men- how Rude. 😮
