I love the movie, and truly it is a guilty pleasure of mine. However, this whole darn thing is scene for scene nothing but artistic license. For instance, there would be nothing strange about this custom of the wedding to either one of them. Marie Antoinette grew up at Hofburg in Vienna which was a copy of Versailles. In fact I am not sure which language was her mother tongue: French or German. She was accustomed to all of the pleasures and advantages of the nobility in the Early Modern Era, since she was the daughter of one of the wealthiest and most powerful royal families in Europe: the Hapsburg Dynasty. None of the customs at Versailles would have been a surprise to her. Though she was probably surprised that he could not get her pregnant until they were in their early 20s. That would have been out of place because they were the monarchs of France and needed a male heir as soon as possible and women normally had children much earlier age back then.

@@mikeoyler2983 You're not understanding something. Most girls in that time had absolutely no idea what was supposed to happen on a wedding night. Was never talked about. I bet Louis didn't know either, not to mention, they didn't even know each other.

@@mikeoyler2983 Her mother tongue was German but she also spoke French and Italian, though historians suggest that she spoke French with an accent. Marie and Louis actually consummated their marriage only 7 years after they had been married. Apparently the cause was that Louis suffered from phimosis, but that wasn't reason enough to stop any rumors about Marie's "inability" to become pregnant and Louis's to get her pregnant. Not to mention the fact that it was a marriage of convenience, not of love.

@@mikeoyler2983 she was not really raised at court, as she was one of the youngest children of her mother and did not live in the capital. She would've been educated and instructed in the customs, but it is this size of court and level of involvement of the nobles in the monarch's life was not shared by other houses.

Wow, I love the detail in this movie. I haven't seen it yet but I intend to. You really see how suffocating it is to be a royal. How awkward would it be to have all those people in your bedroom on your wedding night? And the extravagance of Versaille and their outfits is astounding. It's also beautifully filmed.

Ugh, I think that the 'bedding in', which was witnessed by the Court was really a gross practice of the era! Louis and Antoinette were just children too, it's no wonder that they refused to consummate their marriage until they were older (and much more age appropriate 7 years later!).

@princevesperal
@princevesperal 5 ай бұрын
People were not there on other nights, and it still took years before they could conceive. It took a visit of Marie-Antoinette's brother from Austria to finally help them. It is speculated that the dauphin had a minor genital malformation which made coitus painful, perhaps a phimosis or thight frenulum. He might have undergone a simple surgery to fix this.

The panniers then were truly impractical. It's not so bad in the late 18th century. What I find the most restricting though is the weight and length of the skirts. The stays and small panniers are absolutely fine in of themselves, some even have massive pockets which are really handy. Though other times it's a separate garment.
@wolfclaw254
@wolfclaw254 9 ай бұрын
From what I understand of the time panniers were out of fashion nearly everywhere else in the world. Yet France was considered (as it is now) the height of fashion. Austria, Marie Antoinette's country of origin, did not use the panniers during her youth so it was quite a change when she married into the French royal family. I've heard that sometimes the panniers were 6 feet in width. So bigger than most people were in height. Kinda ridiculous to think about today. But history is made much more interesting just because of the absurdity of some things that occurred.

In a country ruled by an absolute monarchy, at a time when still-limited medical knowledge meant that life expectancy was very low and infant/child mortality, in particular, was very high, they did the best they knew how in order to ensure that there would be an heir that would survive long enough to sit on the throne in their own right, and produce their own heir.

@@Boxghost102 You say all those things, and they supposedly tried Louis for all those things in a kangaroo court, but there was absolutely no conclusive evidence found that condemned Louis. He was killed anyway. France at that time was not producing enough wheat because of poor weather. Louis told the peasants to do crop rotation and plant potatoes but they didn’t listen. There were internal problems in his government with nobles refusing to pay tax and being debauched and immoral. It’s easy to sit and judge Louis but it isn’t easy to control the wicked, even for a King. The fact that the people who came after mysteriously grew wealthy throughout the revolution should tell you who was really pulling the strings off stage.

There are still arranged marriages in certain cultures and parts of the world. I know several people who have had one. Some were happy, some were not.....but, in non-arranged marriages, you also get happy and unhappy people. As long as no one's getting an arranged marriage without their consent or approval, I have no issues with them. My marriage was to my spouse wasn't arranged, but we didn't just happen to meet and fall in love by chance, either. Still together after almost 18 years but not without our fair share of issues.
