We had a wedding in a garden with food we made - and had friends and family do flowers and photography. The wedding was beautiful, everyone felt they had a part in it (we even had croquet and horse shoe tossing for people to play - we knew they could do it even in suits and dresses). In the end we spent about $1500 and had a beautiful wedding that people really enjoyed. We’ve been married 30 years this year! You don’t have to spend $100,000 for a beautiful memorable wedding!

I wore a beautiful ivory suit, he wore a suit and it was the perfect wedding! We took our parents to lunch and were home by 5p! Total cost $200. One sister’s wedding cost $85,000 in the early 90’s and they are divorced. It wasn’t all that fabulous either. Another, close to 125,000. Divorced before they hit the year mark! Yikes. The only thing positive I can say about this wedding is at least they didn't ruin 2 homes. Seriously they have their priorities all messed up starting with the need to normalize and stabilize their household: son doesn't seem to listen/like stepfather which needs to be resolved before going forward. Neither one of these two are good at problem solving nor do they have the ambition to even try. They just do the same thing whenever they encounter a problem: look to someone else to solve it. I think that this wedding planner and heaven truly bless her meant well but she is just a long line of enablers and it would have been better to walk away from this situation.

@@SKC193 The churches as such don't pay taxes here either, but people belonging to certain religions/churches do. And with that money priests are paid and many services too that churches might offer. Church weddings here are free of charge (the ceremony) when one of the partners belongs to a church and therefore pays church tax. You then only pay for extras that don't necessarily come with the church, such as flowers, decorations, and certain musicians you want. She didn’t work all summer and we are supposed to be surprised and sad they cannot afford the wedding. How do you not plan ahead?? Wouldn’t you just delay or tone down the wedding?? How do you not know about the flowers?mrheyve tapped out their money, parents money and credit cards?? What kind of a start is that - in debt??? I think this is an odd show. It lacks a redeeming quality - the couple is hard to cheer for.

They probably should have waited until they had enough money saved up or just go to the courthouse. My fiancé and I both agree that when we get married it’s going to be a justice of the peace and a small bbq with our close family and we are saving the money that we would have spent for a honeymoon and to put into fixing up our house that we just bought. I don’t understand why some people put themselves in debt for one day. In the case of these people they are already in debt wayyy before the wedding so I guess it doesn’t matter to them. And when things get hard they just cry. That’s not going to solve anything.

Hard to believe this story. Usually all money is due 30 days before the reception.

I find it hard to believe the venue even held the date without a deposit etc. and surely a friend with even a phone could take some pics.

In my country a church wedding is free for everyone who has not actively left the church.

In many parts of the US it is an unmentioned courtesy to pay the minister, especially in the Catholic church. They won't refuse to marry you, but paying nothing is a faux pas.

Go to City Hall. Host a reception down the road- when you can afford it. 😜
