This now makes me want to watch Mannequin (1987). It stars Andrew McCarthy, Kim Cattrall (Sex & The City), Meshach Taylor (Designing Women) & Estelle Getty (Golden Girls). Andrew is a starving artist trying to find employement, while still trying to persue things that ignites his creative passions. Kim plays a mannequin, one of his past creations, that only turns into a real women when seen by Andrew. If anyone else can see her, she turns back into a mannequin. Hi jinks ensue. It's 80s cheese at it's finest. Cant recommend enough

@happyninja422 ай бұрын
yeah I can't really recall anyone referencing specific scenes from this film. it's usually used like you said, as a reference for this concept of "pretending something is 100% ok and normal, when it is anything but". USUALLY involving pretending a corpse is alive, but not always. I've seen it sometimes used to just refer to the concept of trying to pull of a deception by presenting the very obviously WRONG thing, in plain sight, and tricking people into thinking it's normal.

When I was a kid in the mid 60's, we left Tennessee and moved to Chicago. I spent many days, in the summer heat, getting pruned skin playing in a fire hydrant. Sometimes, somebody from the fire department would come by and shut the hydrant off. About 5 seconds after they were out of sight, one of us kids would grab a pipe wrench that we had stashed nearby, and turn the water back on. What was real fun was we'd take a 6" wide board, and rope it to the base of the hydrant, and tie it again just below the outlet. The water would shoot against the board and splash everywhere.

True story. I dressed up as Bernie one year for Halloween. (In order to understand, you'll need to see the sequel) because the one issue I had was "How do I get around without my friends having to drag me around?" (I was 30 btw... not a kid, lol). So, I don't want to give anything away, but I got a similar outfit and glasses, wig, mustache, the works, even got the grin down. So my friends and I hit the town, in South Florida going from place to place. At one point, we stopped for dinner. Of course...I couldn't order or eat because I was dead. I'm not an actor, but I have acted, and I've found that I prefer method acting. Once I'm in character, I don't like to break character; I find it easier and a lot more fun, so I just sat there, leaning awkwardly. I never answered the server; my friends did all the talking. I was with 3 friends btw, and they happened to notice a table behind me and off to the side (maybe 20 - 25 feet away with 4 girls (20's - 30 somethings) and they were just being seated. My friends wanted to go over to them, but were all a bit shy to do so. I guess they felt the women were all out of our league, and as much as they wanted to, no one went over to say "hi". It was actually just like the movie, lol. So I broke character and said: "I'll go over there, which table is it?" They didn't think I would. I said: "I'll absolutely do it". So then it became a dare (unnecessary) I was going to do it no matter what. They pointed and told me what to look for, though I never turned to look. I had no clue what I was going to do, no ideas, no plan at all. I was just going to wing it, go with the flow. I got up and "Bernie Shuffled" over to them and sat down at their table. I didn't say a word! I just sat there for a good 7 - 8 minutes and let them do all the talking. They obviously knew who I was dressed as and they were going along with it. They were asking me questions, but I was dead, I couldn't answer. At one point the girl next to me checked my pulse. When she let go of my wrist, I started leaning over. I was aiming for her shoulder, but she moved and I face planted her lap! She was shocked! It was hilarious, but I didn't laugh; I stayed in character and she up-righted me. (Even adjusted my sunglasses). This went on for a few more minutes, then I just got up and shuffled back over to our table. My friends were all like: "Omg, I can't believe you did that" "What did you say?" etc... etc... I said: "I didn't say anything". They were like: "We saw them talking to you. You were there for like 10 minutes. You didn't say anything???" I said: "Not a word". 😆😅 A little bit later, when the women left, they walked by us, and asked my friends to take pictures of them with me (Bernie). My friends obliged and that was it, they went on with their night. I know my friends were disappointed that I didn't invite them over to sit with us, but... I don't like breaking character. 🤣🤣🤣

@brianhophead It's aged better than a certain movie where social outcastes sexually violated popular girls for revenge...😬

It aged well for people with a sense of humor who are able to recognize it as a movie and not to be taken seriously

@@mortimerbrewster3671 I have a sense of humor just fine, thanks. I suspect you would also think Revenge of the Nerds aged just fine as well.

I've always loved this movie. It does help being "elevated" when you watch. My friend and I were in high school when this came out and we did a little drinking before going to the theater. Plus, I snuck in my bottle of booze to keep the buzz going throughout the movie. This was such a surprise hit that the studio threw together a script for a sequel and it did not turn out well.

32:25 Sorry to tell you the Bernie dance references the sequel to this movie…yes there is a sequel. I was familiar with the movies…but did not know about the dance til a new friend showed me around a decade ago. Then randomly the following weekend I was at the mall and all of a sudden 4 people started doing it at the food court! I was so confused, but if it was not for that friend I would have been VERY CONFUSED!

Johnanthan Silverman was in Brighten Beach Memories which you should see.Yes kids play in a firehydrendent in New York. This is their Beaches. You want to go tp the Hamptons look me up. I will take you and your husband to the actual Hamptons next summer. We just have to tell my family in advance.. No he's not going to Larry's apartment. They filmed this in North Carolina not LOng Island. Roy Lichtenstein is a famous artist. That was an imtation of Arnold. People do where Tennis soes at the Beach.Then they spend the rest of the weekend getting the sand out of their shoes. There is a Sequel.

Much of the movie was filmed right down the road from me. It was made by one of the studios in Wilmington, NC. They used Wilmington, Bald Head Island, Wrightsville Beach, and Fort Fisher. They just used street scenes from NY to give the impression it took place in NY.

Exterior shots on the island were shot on Bald Head Island, North Carolina. Actually have to travel by golf cart no gas powered vehicles, and can climb the lighthouse.

I tried looking for where the house is located but found out it was built for the movie and dismantled after. I'm not sure if the interior shots were done inside that house but if the exterior was a set then I assume the interior was either the same fake house or a studio set somewhere.
@briangus1822 ай бұрын
@@chamoo232 Yeah, I think I read somewhere they built the house set near Fort Fisher (not verified so could be incorrect).

I raised 75k and Christina Ann Tucker is to be thanked. I got my self my dream car 🚗 just last weekend, My journey with her started after my best friend came back from New York and saw me suffering in dept then told me about her and how to change my life through her. Christina A. Tucker is the kind of person one needs in his or her life! I got a home, a good wife, and a beautiful daughter. Note: this is not a promotion but me trying to make a point that no matter what happens, always have faith and keep living!!!

The dance you're referring to is taken from the second movie, which is even more over the top and hilarious.

Hi Ashleigh, glad you're enjoying the 80s fun. Larry is played by Andrew McCarthy who was in another fun 80s movie Mannequin. Please check it out along with the sequel Mannequin 2: On the Move.

Yes playing in a open fire hydrant was a real thing in the 80s and 90s

The sequel is right up there with Gremlins 2. They go on a completely different direction. It's ridiculous. And you either love it or hate it. I would recommend watching it just for the context of the dance you mimicked at the start of this video... and even though I've never used pot in my life and don't really think it leads to great video content.... if you're ever going to be elevated for any watch, that's probably the one to do it for.

Yes in inner cities it is quite common to open a fire hydrant. Sometimes the city here even has sprinkler attachments for them.

The female co-star/love interest also stars and has a better role in The Last Starfighter. Definitely a great movie to check out. It is, IIRC, one of the first movies to included CGI. Extremely hokey for today's standards, but top of the line back in the 80's. Highly recommend. :)
