Terry Kiser doesn’t get nearly enough credit for the absolutely INCREDIBLE physical comedy performance he gives in this film. It’s genuinely some of the best physical comedy I’ve ever seen.

This now makes me want to watch Mannequin (1987). It stars Andrew McCarthy, Kim Cattrall (Sex & The City), Meshach Taylor (Designing Women) & Estelle Getty (Golden Girls). Andrew is a starving artist trying to find employement, while still trying to persue things that ignites his creative passions. Kim plays a mannequin, one of his past creations, that only turns into a real women when seen by Andrew. If anyone else can see her, she turns back into a mannequin. Hi jinks ensue. It's 80s cheese at it's finest. Cant recommend enough

This movie is what I point to where executing and directing were top notch for comedy. This should be taught in acting class especially Bernie's part. I must've watched it a dozen times on HBO in the Summer of 1990. It was one of the few movies that they had that they could show during the day, since it wasn't rated R, so it was on every few days in the afternoon for most of the Summer. That must've really burned it into my brain because I re-watched it recently and remembered every single scene.

One of the best comedies of the 80s. Remember watching this at the cinema and people were in stitches when Bernie goes water skiing and they have the fly swotter as well. Andrew McCarthy was of course one of the brat pack and very famous back then. Terry Kiser was just brilliant playing the dead Bernie. A great fun watch.

I would say that most people who invoke "Weekend At Bernie's" are referencing the general concept or premise, which is animating a dead guy to maintain the impression he is alive. I'm unaware if people are actually quoting the movie or referencing specific scenes.
@happyninja42
@happyninja42 2 ай бұрын
yeah I can't really recall anyone referencing specific scenes from this film. it's usually used like you said, as a reference for this concept of "pretending something is 100% ok and normal, when it is anything but". USUALLY involving pretending a corpse is alive, but not always. I've seen it sometimes used to just refer to the concept of trying to pull of a deception by presenting the very obviously WRONG thing, in plain sight, and tricking people into thinking it's normal.

When I was a kid in the mid 60's, we left Tennessee and moved to Chicago. I spent many days, in the summer heat, getting pruned skin playing in a fire hydrant. Sometimes, somebody from the fire department would come by and shut the hydrant off. About 5 seconds after they were out of sight, one of us kids would grab a pipe wrench that we had stashed nearby, and turn the water back on. What was real fun was we'd take a 6" wide board, and rope it to the base of the hydrant, and tie it again just below the outlet. The water would shoot against the board and splash everywhere.

True story. I dressed up as Bernie one year for Halloween. (In order to understand, you'll need to see the sequel) because the one issue I had was "How do I get around without my friends having to drag me around?" (I was 30 btw... not a kid, lol). So, I don't want to give anything away, but I got a similar outfit and glasses, wig, mustache, the works, even got the grin down. So my friends and I hit the town, in South Florida going from place to place. At one point, we stopped for dinner. Of course...I couldn't order or eat because I was dead. I'm not an actor, but I have acted, and I've found that I prefer method acting. Once I'm in character, I don't like to break character; I find it easier and a lot more fun, so I just sat there, leaning awkwardly. I never answered the server; my friends did all the talking. I was with 3 friends btw, and they happened to notice a table behind me and off to the side (maybe 20 - 25 feet away with 4 girls (20's - 30 somethings) and they were just being seated. My friends wanted to go over to them, but were all a bit shy to do so. I guess they felt the women were all out of our league, and as much as they wanted to, no one went over to say "hi". It was actually just like the movie, lol. So I broke character and said: "I'll go over there, which table is it?" They didn't think I would. I said: "I'll absolutely do it". So then it became a dare (unnecessary) I was going to do it no matter what. They pointed and told me what to look for, though I never turned to look. I had no clue what I was going to do, no ideas, no plan at all. I was just going to wing it, go with the flow. I got up and "Bernie Shuffled" over to them and sat down at their table. I didn't say a word! I just sat there for a good 7 - 8 minutes and let them do all the talking. They obviously knew who I was dressed as and they were going along with it. They were asking me questions, but I was dead, I couldn't answer. At one point the girl next to me checked my pulse. When she let go of my wrist, I started leaning over. I was aiming for her shoulder, but she moved and I face planted her lap! She was shocked! It was hilarious, but I didn't laugh; I stayed in character and she up-righted me. (Even adjusted my sunglasses). This went on for a few more minutes, then I just got up and shuffled back over to our table. My friends were all like: "Omg, I can't believe you did that" "What did you say?" etc... etc... I said: "I didn't say anything". They were like: "We saw them talking to you. You were there for like 10 minutes. You didn't say anything???" I said: "Not a word". 😆😅 A little bit later, when the women left, they walked by us, and asked my friends to take pictures of them with me (Bernie). My friends obliged and that was it, they went on with their night. I know my friends were disappointed that I didn't invite them over to sit with us, but... I don't like breaking character. 🤣🤣🤣

Hey Ashleigh. Love your reaction. Gwen is in a couple more movies you may enjoy, The Last Starfighter and one for HallowBeans!, Night of the Comet. Larry from Pretty in Pink is in a comedy that I know you would enjoy, Mannequin. Bernie is in the sequel Mannequin 2: On The Move.

@awkwardashleigh you are going to love spider man into the spidervers and the sequel spider man across the spidervers and there is a story line where Dr doom takes control over Tony iron man body and a another multivers version of Tony as doom but with Robert downy Jr return to marvel movies and strange is playing Dr doom and some people are confused with him being Dr doom ,my money on it being Dr doom freaky Friday thing and Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan just a sequel to the Jamie Lee Curtis freaky Friday called freakyer Friday at disney 23 a disney place to new disney stuff . Dr doom is a marvel villan of the fantastic 4 the first family super hero with Reed Richards aka Mr fantastic able to stretch his body like a rubber monkey toys and his wife sue storm aka the invisible woman and her brother Johnny able to fly and become the human torch his body is on fire and Ben grim the thing with super strong and in a rock monster suit made out of rocks and the human torch is played by Chris Evans who played Steve rogers watch the fantastic 4 so you can understand the story .Jessica alba is the invisible woman .Reed Richards is ioan gruffudd a Welsh in London actor and Michael Chiklis from not a ordinary family which his character has super strong as well as the thing and a Australian actor named Julian McMahon as Dr doom and Michael Chiklis has a piece by piece make up for the thing face and a bodysuit .fantastic 4 2005 .

I've always loved this movie. It does help being "elevated" when you watch. My friend and I were in high school when this came out and we did a little drinking before going to the theater. Plus, I snuck in my bottle of booze to keep the buzz going throughout the movie. This was such a surprise hit that the studio threw together a script for a sequel and it did not turn out well.

32:25 Sorry to tell you the Bernie dance references the sequel to this movie…yes there is a sequel. I was familiar with the movies…but did not know about the dance til a new friend showed me around a decade ago. Then randomly the following weekend I was at the mall and all of a sudden 4 people started doing it at the food court! I was so confused, but if it was not for that friend I would have been VERY CONFUSED!

Much of the movie was filmed right down the road from me. It was made by one of the studios in Wilmington, NC. They used Wilmington, Bald Head Island, Wrightsville Beach, and Fort Fisher. They just used street scenes from NY to give the impression it took place in NY.

I tried looking for where the house is located but found out it was built for the movie and dismantled after. I'm not sure if the interior shots were done inside that house but if the exterior was a set then I assume the interior was either the same fake house or a studio set somewhere.

The sequel is right up there with Gremlins 2. They go on a completely different direction. It's ridiculous. And you either love it or hate it. I would recommend watching it just for the context of the dance you mimicked at the start of this video... and even though I've never used pot in my life and don't really think it leads to great video content.... if you're ever going to be elevated for any watch, that's probably the one to do it for.
