Great vid and on time for me bought a set of used dart 230 heads with jessel shaft rockers for 1500 couldnt pass it up anyway the springs on it wont work with my cam im a little over what they are good for and this vid helps me to understand why and how of it. Ive got my machinist taking care of it but i want to understand what is happening and this vid did shed some light for me. Thanks keep it up

Eric been watching your videos for about a little over a 1/2 Year when I was younger i mildly ported heads. which got me interested in your KZbin channel. I really like the way you explain your stuff but you have so much wisdom on HEADS valve trains and this is just my opinion you always try to appease the things that you are great at i think you you don't give credit were credit is due. but hey that's just you really appreciate your knowledge God bless

I worked in a spring shop for 3 months. I had to load a grind machine by hand, shot peen, and lube/wash machine, and a coiler. only cool thing we did were the springs for the trunk on that honda truck trunk in the bed

Good video. The rate can vary by the coil count and diameter. Wire size also dictates this at load height and installed height. Looks like they are all right hand wind and left on the inside spring. I'm sure all the springs are out of chrome silicone or chrome silicone valve spring wire. The shiny ones probably have been run in a tumbler for a while. Most of the time they are stress relieved at 800° shot peened for four minutes after grind then recook at 450° after peen. Your correct on the retainers matching your springs. I use a digital Larson tester with a 1000lb load cell to check these. If you could get the retainers you could have your springs made here in Tulsa.

What's your opinion about this scenario... I have AFR 210 Eliminator heads. Want to run a S roller with 273 duration 700 lift. AFR says the spring which is Pac 1243 240 @1.90 ih. not to use it for over 260 duration at .050 or .710 lift, rather upgrade. Upgrading to the next spring which is the 1225 will give too much extra spring hgt due to being for .800 lift and 2.00 ih. So looking at more possibility of spring surge. Also AFR recommends only 5/16 pushrods due to clearance issues at the pinch I believe. ie. pushrods flexing more. Currently cam is S roller .645 lift 260 duration 264 ex. .110 wall 5/16 pushrods and titanium ret. Is AFR just being overly cautious as Erson has a Spring similar to specs of the AFR (Pac) 1243 and they seem to recommend for v much more duration. Pretty much apples to apples with these 2 springs. I've had this scenario before on customers heads non AFR most time they were running .735 approx lift so decision was easy.

Good information Eric, as always. Any particular reason why you don't like Comp? Anything the average street guy should know about Comp springs? Also you didn't get into standard vs beehive vs conical. Do you have any preferences there? Thanks! I hear conical is the best of both worlds.

You get what you pay for with valvesprings! If you have a "STAGE" whatever, L/S hydraulic roller. Run the springs the camshaft manufacturer recommends! Normally the beehive! But if you are running a real camshaft, you still should be talking to your cam manufacturer! They need to know what heads, what valves, & what you are doing with the engine! Good Cylinder head guys can get you close! But your camshaft guy knows & has tested there cams normally on spintrons & dynos! If you want, or actually need a top quality spring. You need to plan on spending more than a couple hundred dollars! They are more expensive [Sometimes double a cheaper spring] & they absolutely need the correct corresponding parts, & the proper setup! If your the type that buys cheap Ebay china shit, especially fully assembled heads, you best take them to a quality cylinder head guy. Like Eric. Because I've seen BBC heads come through w huge double springs, that had less than 30lbs on the seat & less than 100lbs open, you could pop them apart by hand 🙄🙄🙄🙄! It was amazingly bad 🤣🤣🤣🤣! We also had a customer run a assembled set of china garbage. The way he found out things weren't right, was by dropping multiple valves, on the first test drive! [What a fcking mess] Also if your not sure about setting up valvetrains, or if you think setting up a valvetrain is bolting rockers down on a L/S, you probably shouldn't be doing it! Dropping a valve, normally destroys the whole engine! If you look up valve float on you tube, I think Pac made some slo motion videos years ago! If you want to see how fast you could wear out even the best parts, in your heads. See the valve float videos! Thanks again Eric, & as you said, you could make many videos on just valvesprings! I think Steve Morris put up a bunch of videos about valvetrain, if you look up his Steve Tech! I'm sure our other cylinder head buddy did also! But that's up to you if you want to mention him! Have a great end to your week 😂😂😂😂!

Eric, I have Manley springs on a BBC with .773/.744 lift- 276/272 @ .050. Its a Straub cam with Straub supplied Manley springs. I believe the seat pressure is supposed to be around 235 lbs. I have the springs set to around .050 to coil bind. With an on head checker and the off head, I am only getting around 190 to 200 on seat. I told this to Straub. He told me to check for any wear pattern on the valve stems. Everything looks fine after some hard street driving miles and the 13 engine dyno pulls we did. The intake valve is stainless @ 2.335 Tony Mamo ported AFR heads. The light seat pressure makes me a little nervous but I have seen lots of guys running real light seat pressure on much larger cams than mine thanks to spintron testing. What is your opinion on this? Thanks!

Nice video Eric. I was planning on running a Crane solid roller in my 454 bbc Corvette. The cam actually came from a mercury marine engine. It uses Crane CDS series lobes meant for oval track endurance engines. The cam has .672 lift, 252/257 at 50. What valve spring would you recommend for this cam. Thank you.

Hey Eric, Tim here, gotta question.......when i re-did my KRE Poncho D-ports, (had to as i bent a few in the mass carnage of a 6,000rpm engine failure [lost a rod, and everything self destructed]) i used the spring mic for installed height (bought new springs that Kauffman uses for those heads they are comp).....i was able to get + or - .015 from what the sheet said.....Jeff (Kauffman) didnt bat an eye, but i've been wondering if i shuda stayed tighter to what the sheet said.....car runs awesome, but i have a custom Kauffman grind to put in, to get me to 10:80's or so....(i'm at 11:0's @ 120, 7 flat in 1/8th).....is +/- .015 ok on a solid flat tappet?........dunno if you can take the time to respond, but this vid got my wheels turnin in my head.....if ya can answer great, if not, i understand.....GREAT vid!!!.....ALWAYS stay to the end!!!!..PEACE!
