under the online etymology dictionary entry for "the", it includes this: Adverbial use in the more the merrier, the sooner the better, etc. is a relic of Old English þy, the instrumentive case of the neuter demonstrative

The word "ty" exists in Swedish too and means "since" or "because" or "for". It is mostly considered archaic these days, but you can find it as a compound in words like "tyvärr" ("alas", "unfortunately") and "dylik" ("similar").

In Swedish we have two distinct words for this kind of use. The first "the" is replaced with "ju" and the second "the" is replaced with "desto". The Swedish version of "The more, the merrier" is "Ju fler, desto bättre" (The more, the better). However, it is very common for people to mistakenly only use "ju" or even only "desto" and no one is consistent about it so... yeah. the reason it becomes so confusing is because we like to talk about longer relationships of different things. As in "the more we invite, the merrier the party is gonna be, the more popular we are gonna get" and so on with any more than just one affecting the other.

In equivalent constructions in Spanish , the first "the" becomes "Cuanto más/menos", literally "how much/many more/less"
