9:20 About puddings Ruby, I recommend Norman Lindsay's The Magic Pudding published in 1918. It is an Australian classic, with wonderful illustrations. The Magic Pudding regenerates each time he is eaten, so he can be eaten again. He is quite a grumpy little character with arms and legs, and his bowl is his hat! Merry Christmas 🎄.

According to Google, Ruby, "The Killing of a Wren or a Robin was considered good luck." So, a card with a Dead Bird would be the same as wishing someone a Happy and Prosperous New Year. Very weird to us One of those customs that I am glad to see went away

Thanks for sharing those Victorian Christmas cards. They are wild! We are definitely still living in Dickens’ world when it comes to Christmas. Did you know, though, that he was inspired by American author Washington Irving’s Old Christmas stories? He read them as a child and wrote to Irving a couple of years before writing a Christmas Carol, saying that he’d like to travel with him to Bracebridge Hall where Irving’s Christmas celebrations were set.
@RubyGranger816 сағат бұрын
That's so wonderful! I knew he was influenced by Irving, but didn't know that his Christmas stories specifically were - I'll have to look into that so thank you :)x

In my country, many old Christmas traditions are almost forgotten. For example, people used to make little decorative pastries with birds made from the same pastry on 21.12. on Old St Thomas Day....the most common gift for your family was oranges, hazelnuts, walnuts, socks, and candies. People keep fasting on Christmas Eve, so we eat beans, potatoes, baklava, etc.. Many young generations don't know about that.

These funny/weird Christmas cards remind me that we are not so different from people back then, they seem so much like the memes and silly images that we share online. Also Frogs and jellyfish, maybe just the random animals people were 'obsessed' with at the time. The dead bird card makes me sad though...What's christmas-y about that! Lovely video, I watched as I was making some Christmas cards too. xxx

I really enjoyed this video because I learned so much about some parts of the history of Christmas! I just love the absurdity of Victorian Christmas cards but I will say that as a robin lover, I would be very sad if I got given a Christmas card with a dead robin on it. I definitely prefer the more funnier ones like a mouse riding a lobster or the vegetable people! I definitely want to look more into the history of Christmas now!

Is the dead robin to do with the hunting of the wren? Killing small birds on Boxing Day brought luck if I remember correctly. I could be wrong, but I have a feeling the hunting of the wren appears in Susan Cooper’s The Dark is Rising. If you haven’t read that, it’s brilliant. The whole series is good, but that’s the best!

Maybe there's inherent festivity in anthropomorphism? There's also the cock robin nursery rhyme, which might play into the dead robin card theme.

This video is perfect for the Christmas season ruby! I'm going to watch it to get those holiday vibes. Also: I'm going to recommend "Scrooge" its a Christmas musical from 1970 that puts a comical twist on Dickens classic work. The ghost of Christmas present is sassy and Scrooge has the unfortunate job of being the Devils clerk at one point 😂

Happy Christmas, and May all your Yuletide wishes come true. A little Christmas historical take? Charles Dickens invented the Christmas we know, and I’m good with that. And that’s an American Jewish perspective. 😂 i celebrate it and I try to keep it in my heart all year. The end of THIS year has been trying. ❤ Thank you again.

Is what you mentioned about caste role switching on the 12th day of Christmas carnival the inspiration for the title of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night? There are parallels of (gender) role switching and carnival craziness in the plot!

Might the little bird on the card be a wren? It doesn’t look like a robin.
@thetragicyouth18 сағат бұрын
Are those weird Victorian images really trying to convey 'festivity'? Or is it more that, historically, Christmas used to be associated with subverting tradition/confounding expectation (cf. Twelfth Night, Feast of Fools, Lord of Misrule, etc)...? To me, the surreal juxtapositions depicted in those cards wittily confound expectation, they don't have to be 'Christmassy' in the modern sense.
@RubyGranger816 сағат бұрын
This is such an interesting thought - the cards are feeding into the way that Christmas was traditionally celebrated, which absolutely was based in outlandish subversion as you say (and for this reason, still are "festive", though just not in our sense). Also like that it's a tradition which subverts tradition!
