Husband and I bought our first home at 25, got +$250k in equity, sold that house, moved into our second house that is 1100 sq ft larger two years later. We have 2 kids and we're 28 and 29 now. Both college educated with no student loans, and both of our cars are paid off. My parents didn't teach me anything about money, how to buy a house, car care, cooking, or anything about adulting in general. It's all been learning from Google, KZbin, and asking friends for advice. It sucks not having involved parents, but with today's technology there's less excuse than ever to blame your parents on learning how to adult.

My parents refused to teach me to drive as well because they didn’t want me to possess that skill. So I asked a friend to help me learn, got a copy of one of their handbooks to study for my test, and got my license. Then I worked 3 jobs to get an apartment and a car. Sometimes our parents struggle to let go or purposely try to hold us back. But if we are truly dedicated to pressing on then it won’t work. At 22 your dad isn’t why you don’t know how to drive. I also live in Houston and we have driving schools, the Texas woekforce commission offers a slew of services, friends and family are great resources for helping with basics. There are online courses for the laws and such that you have to learn. Where there’s a will….there is definitely a way.

My parents didn't teach me to drive, but they did offer to pay for a driving school. My father DID try to teach me, but realized after one lesson he didn't have the patience or the guts to be in a car with a hysterical and inexperienced teenaged girl driving. When I asked my mom if she would teach me, she said "sure", handed me the keys and her grocery list and said "good luck". I was shocked. Apparently she thought I should learn the way she did; just figure it out as I go. I explained I would get pulled over and ticketed, she shrugged again and said, "well, you can always cry" 😮. Sometimes our parents have VERY different ideas about what we should learn and how we should learn. Sometimes they're terrible. It's cool when we're old enough to discern when those ideas are awful or good, and can make good decisions.

Which is substantial amount of sexual partners in one year. It’s his house with his rules if she didn’t like it then move out like she did. Maybe if we had more fathers that had rules and guidance for children then we would have better western world. Caleb was really biased towards the dad imo. He keeps saying "Who cares you're an adult now, it doesn't matter what you do". But he keeps forgetting that yeah you're an adult now, be prepared to have consequences for your actions. Once you're an adult, the parent has no obligation to support your endeavors that they disagree with. Especially as a young adult, if you want the privilege of support from your parents you'll have to come to compromise to things that your parents are not okay with. If you want to exercise your right to freedom no matter what, be prepared to lose that privilege. People always have this biased perspective towards parents that the parents have to support their adult children no matter what. While for the kids they can block their whole family for any small reason after turning 18 and they'd be applauded. (I KID YOU NOT, there's an AITA where a father refused to pay for college tuition because the daughter became a stripper for easy cash. And the whole subreddit was against the father its crazy.)

absolutely not. We are talking about young adults here, not children. Would you support your adult kid doing drugs overdosing on everything just because he didn't choose to be born and people live differently than others? What about them getting into gangs? Or becoming robbers? Because there's always that chance that might happen, so if you can't handle supporting that you shouldn't have a kid? That's absurd This is on the extreme but it applies to everything. You want support from your parents after you're an adult, you adhere to their values. If you don't want to be aligned with their values, that's totally okay. But don't expect them to bend to your needs and blame everything on them. That's called entitlement. @@griddlegrease

Driving lessons cost money, and she is trying to cut expenses to pay off debt. After getting a license, a car would also cost money if bought with financing, so I would think she should focus on taking the bus to work until the debts are cleared, then save up an emergency fund, and then save up to buy a good second-hand car for cash. She can do the driving lessons when she gets to the stage of saving up to buy her first car. And by then her boyfriend might have decided to give her free initial driving lessons (to learn the basics) so she only has to pay for a couple of lessons before taking her driving test. ps. My NW is around $4MM yet my last 'new' car purchase was a 20-yo S-type Jag that cost $8K cash. Buying a new vehicle (which loses value the moment you drive it off the lot) is insane, as is using financing to buy anything except a house (or an investment such as a rental property that provides total ROI (rent + capital gain) that is more than the interest rate on the loan).

It would probably be really good for her to move to another city and just focus on her own life for a while. You’re right that she doesn’t seem to be treating herself as the main character in her own life; she’s the decisionmaker now, and ultimately it doesn’t matter whose “fault” any of her problems are; she’s still the one who needs to fix them. I come from an abusive family background myself. There were plenty of ways in which I was delayed compared to my peers, things I had to learn as an adult that ideally I would have learned much earlier, and emotional issues I had to work through. My fault? No. My responsibility to fix and take charge of my own life going forward, regardless of whose fault anything was? Yes. She's still pretty young though, and it's understandable that she hasn't fully wrapped her head around this yet. I wish her well - hope she works through all this and gets to a better place, maybe with the help of a good therapist!

yup. it is a father’s job to teach his daughters to value their purity. it is a very difficult task these days with the feminism bullshit spreading the lie that sleeping around is empowering. it isn’t. it will make you less attractive to men. and believe it or not, one day, you might value having a great husband and being a mother.

Are you guys kidding me. He said she’s going to hell for past actions and continues to hold what, a casual thing with guys that = less one every 2 months, against her despite the fact she was a consenting adult and it wasn’t his business. No matter how you feel about casual sex, she was young and her father completely abandoned then fucked her financially. We would not be having this same conversation if she was a guy. He never taught her how to drive and demands money to drive her places, which is encouraging dependence. He has nothing in retirement which is a burden on his kids, he takes his kids out for food knowing they both can’t afford it and makes them pay for it, he completely abandoned her when she needed him. Healthy fathers do not have daughters with broken chain tattoos to symbolize ending their relationship. Messy as hell that she’s still interacting with him, but all children crave their parents and she lost her mother immediately after she left. Have some empathy and basic human decency to see the situation for what it is

She didn’t just blame her father… She also mentioned her mothers death and the resulting grief, and agreed with Caleb that she recognized her spending was a coping mechanism. She’s trying to turn herself around, and seeing a therapist once a week. She cut up the cards.
