If you were paying attention to the Other Father's song, you'd realize that it was actually a warning. Making up a song about coraline. She's a peach (something to eat) she's a doll (how the other mother spies on her) she's a pal of mine (he actually cares about her.) She's a cute as a button to everyone who ever laid their eyes on coraline (buttons for eyes) When she comes exploring, mom and I will never ever make it boring (how the other mother plans to lure her into staying) Our eyes will be on coraline (sewing the buttons into her eyes) And then the pause right at the end, before he pulls away, he looks right at the camera like he's saying, "Did you get that?"

This movie is very much about perspective. Coraline sees everything from the perspective of a child. She just moved and misses her friends and is very lonely, she doesn't want to eat vegetables or wear boring grey clothes, she just wants to have fun outside and is trying to add a bit of magic into her life (using a "wand" to locate a well). Her parents don't have time for her so she feels unloved. But her parents are trying her best and love her very much, they're just busy at the moment. The mother was in a car accident and is still wearing a neck brace which in the us likely means a ton of hospital bills, they just bought a new house and moved which had to be expensive. The parents are both working to finish their current project which has a very near deadline. They're overworked and they have no money or time to cook, to go into the garden, to play with Coraline. When they finish their project they start having time for her again, they buy her the gloves she wanted, they no longer seem as dead inside. From a child's perspective (Coraline's perspective) this must have seemed arbitrary - like her parents stopped caring about her and then, once she saved them, started caring about her again. But from an adult's perspective it's clear they were just going through a rough patch and they loved her the whole time, they just didn't have the time to give her the attention she needed.

True, and thinking about this is causing so much pain to me. Every movie that shows things from a child perspective while still showing how the parents struggle makes me think about the time when I was a kid. I was a very good kid, if to compare with many other children I've seen, but I still had my moments of greed, of learning about life hardship, boundaries etc. And I never threw tantrums when I wanted something (my parents told me that, so I take it for word, I wouldn't remember myself), but my parents apparently always felt so guilty when I would ask for something that they'd save up to buy it for me. And as any kid does, I would play a few weeks with the toy and then move to another toy, or to drawing, or to playing outside. And for some reason, I feel so much guilt (I did as a kid, and I still do now) for leaving some toys and never playing with them again. It's my parents' hard work after all. After learning how hard it is to save money in adult life, I felt even more devastated. I know that this is just what toys are meant for. Toys are meant to bring happiness and be played with until they don't serve their purpose anymore. But I still cry every time I think about some of my childhood toys that I left almost untouched because I cherished them so much I wasto afraid to break them or make them dirty. I remember feeling even angry at my toys while experiencing all those conflicting emotions... And I don't remember my parents ever guilt tripping me or anything over things they'd gift me, so I don't know where this irrational sadness comes from. Maybe it was from seeing the struggles my family was going through that I was realizing by myself the worth of those beautiful things I had. Sorry for the trauma dumping, this comment evoked a lot of burrief emotions. This feeling always comes back time to time...

Why the everloving fuck did I just realize the reason that Wybie's grandmother let Coraline into the Pink Palace was because the other mother was going to go after Wybie next and allowed her to move in essentially sacrificing her in her grandson's place. That's why she was surprised when she met Coraline and saw she was alive.

I enjoyed the end of the movie because of the change of perspective, yes, but even more than that. In the beginning Coraline was miserable because of the way things were, and she's introduced to a world where things are amazing and colorful without trying, but it's an illusion. At the end of the movie, the rest of the world is a bit drab, but she's putting in the effort to make it brighter and more colorful. It's hard work, and it isn't spectacular or showstopping, but it is real and makes a difference. I think a great moral from this movie is that if you're not happy with the way your life is, you can make the effort to make it a little brighter, even if it's just planting tulips. That and appreciating what you do have vs looking at what you're lacking, naturally

A few FunFacts: -this movie was made by Henry Selick who directed “The Nightmare Before Christmas” for Tim Burton because he was stuck directing “Batman Returns” for Warner, recently he worked with Jordan Peele making the new Netflix stop-motion movie “Wendel & Wild” -the name of the book was going to be “Caroline” but Neil Gaiman accidentally wrote “Coraline” instead and he really liked it so kept it that way, that’s where the “Caroline” jokes came from -the idea for the movie came from a nightmare Neil Gaiman’s daughter had where her mother was replaced by a witch saying she was her mother now -they call the other-mother a “Beldam” which is a sort of evil witch who lives in the woods and kills people that enter her territory and the stone Coraline used during the game was a hagstone used to identify beldams -there are theories that Beldam and Pennywise from “It” are the same creature but they feed on different emotions -Wybie is not in the book he was created for the movie because the book has a lot of moments when Coraline narrates her thoughts and since the movie has no narration they created a new character her age so she could talk to him -Mr, Bobinsky has a medal that implies he is a survival from Chernobyl -the lines those two actresses said during the trapeze scene was a monologue from “Hamlet” -there are other portals around the Pink Palace and the well was one of them that’s implied when Wybie tells her it’s said to be so deep if you stare at it you can see stars during the day because it can take you to the Other World and it’s always night there

When she says to Coraline "I'll die without you" thats literal. She was starving. So if the key came back to the same world as her, maybe she was already dead or weak. Also the tunnel is a being on its own, as the book narrates. Even the other mother is afraid of whatever creature it is. And it's totally aware at all times when Coraline crosses over. This could lead to think that the other world is like the inside of that creature, and the beldam is a parasite that lives there and has to lure the food in. Something I love about claymation is that with how much effort it takes to make a single movement, none of the easter eggs are just 'mistakes'. They would have to take MONTHS to complete. My favorite is the theory where the lady with the orange hair looking through the window in the clothing shop, is actually The Other Mother in disguise. There's so many theories and easter eggs in Coraline, I was OBSESSED with the movie when I was younger 😂😂

Some cool hidden secrets!! With the tea leaves, you obviously see the Beldam’s hand, but after there is the joke that Mrs F sees a giraffe. Notice that it looks very similar to the Beldam with the shape of the head and legs. There are also several shots of the moon in the other world, you’ll notice that the moon phases are going in reverse each time it’s shown, another implication that it isn’t the real world :)

The Other Mother is based on her voice actress, Teri Hatcher, who is indeed very attractive. She was a Bond Girl, and played Lois Lane in the long running tv show The New Adventures of Superman. It's not at all clear what The Other Mother is but there's some strong vibes. She seems to be some sort of extra-dimensional predator who returns to feed every 15 years or so, based on the clothing of the kids, and the dates on the "vintage" taffy bowls. She spins illusions to bait her trap, like a spiderweb, and her final - possibly true - form is that of a spider. So, she feeds on children at intervals of several years, she manipulates reality and takes the form of a spider. She very strongly resembles IT from Steven King's movie of the same name (minus the clown theme). She could be a similar creature or even the same species. There's also a lot of dark fairytale imagery - the mushroom rings, the promises and bargains, the love of games, competitions, trickery and glamours, the stealing of children into her world. She could be some kind of unseelie fae or sidhe, a Fairy Queen, famous for kidnapping children and spoiling them with gifts and presents that make the child sick or grow poorly. Wells, and "fairy rings" of mushrooms are often referred to as ways to cross over into Fairy realms, and old houses in places like Cornwall used to have small wierd windows and doors like the small one Coraline found called Witch Windows of fairy doors to confuse and ward off witches or dark spirits. Oh, and the blooming garden? Remember how it looked like Coraline in the Other World? Well, the dead, dreary real world version also looks like a face, but not nearly as nice. It looks like the Beldam.

I like to believe that the Beldam is an old Fae witch/crone who feasts on the deals of the children. It would make sense with Wybie already having a history of water witches. Maybe he heard stories of a water witch stealing away his grandmas sister from Granny, which is why she tried imposed a fear of both the house and the well on Wybie. She, the Beldam, HAS to have them agree to the deal to get the soul, so that’s where I believe it’s a ancient Fae Crone or Hag. Very much like IT, minus the spooky clown I want to punch (but Tim Curry is so nice 😢)

I was terrified of, and somehow still really liked this movie as a kid. (NOT ACTUALLY) and this is a far stretch but here me out; the well is another entrance to the other world. For starters they look basically the exact same ( see 24:29 ) AND THERE IS A RING OF MUSHROOMS AROUND THE WELL. Which signifies magical entrances!!! So, Coraline never left, and she threw the other mother the key which she can now use to escape into the real world.

The point is not only Coraline be a bit mean with things around her,the point is her parents,because if things of life,job etc,have no time for her,they are neglecting her in fact,she wish for more attention and the other mother gives that to her,a family that always listen her,thats what she miss,now her parents are not bad still they are cause are neglecting her,at the same time the other mother,as the cat tell you, is "eating the daughter" because is,in opposite,the classic mother that eat kids with too much attention eating them life away. Now... go watch nightmare before christmas... Both are made by great genius Henry Selick(nightmare was a tim burton idea,but just few things,but all the movie is entire made by henry)

i can vividly remember in grade 2 my teacher had us read the graphic novel for Coraline which was just terrifying. and then at the end she was like LETS WATCH THE MOVIE! and then for like 6 months i was completely convinced i had an other mother and she lived in my closet and i was dead terrified on a nightly basis....love the movie now lol
