As someone from one of the groups who discussed buying this castle, I'm happy to say it was sold to a lovely couple of editors from NYC who seem determined to help fix it up and maybe (although we've not talked) have it be a sort of writer's retreat. However it goes, it found owners!

My grandfather owned this house for many years and had 12 children. It looked quite different though. The dining room was adjacent to the living room and the kitchen was downstairs. A dumbwaiter moved the food service between them. I recall as a child going to catholic mass at Easter in the chapel. Grampa was a pioneer anesthesiologist who also founded the Catholic Medical Mission Board.

I think it is spectacular and I could easily live there--if there was an elevator!!!

I believe this castle was sold recently in April 2022. Had an interest in this, but lacked the money.

Currently in the real-estate market in NYC you could buy a 700sq ft nothing condo apt for the same price or more with monthly MOA fees

Where is the kitchen
@annabanana503 жыл бұрын
The kitchen is tiny because unfortunately the family cut the house up and put an apartment in the first floor that used to be the kitchen. I’ll bet it was a big kitchen because the first owners were wealthy and had help. The recent owners start the official entrance to the house on the second floor ans added a small pathetic kitchen. So we will never see the house in Its original glory.
@LoneWolfAttack3 жыл бұрын
There are 2 kitchens now. Neither are original (or go with the house at all). One is on the main floor connecting the dining room or library (not sure what the room is -- it might have been the drawing room) with the parlor. The other is on the lower level. The lower level needs a total gut. It's pathetic what these fools did to it. Anyone who buys it should rip the main floor kitchen right out and convert it into a bathroom with a claw-foot tub, since there isn't one on that floor.

At 42 seconds in, you can see it connects to the tiny dinning room, in the mirror. Looks tiny and too modern. If I could've bought this house, I'd gut the kitchen and turn it into a bathroom with a claw foot tub. The downstairs apartment would also be ripped out, including that ugly basic tile from the 90's. I'd not only put in a huge kitchen, but maybe even a Butler's Pantry and washroom. I'd also pull a lot inspiration from homes in the same era like the Biltmore Estate or the Winchester Mansion. You know, something of that same caliber. Sadly all the bathrooms need to be gutted and restored. In that bathroom with the patio, upstairs, a clawfoot tub with a shower curtain would be sufficient. That other bathroom, with the black tile, was probably something grand, with multiple dressing areas. I swear, it should be illegal for people to do that kind of a hack job to these old homes. Hopefully the new owners restore it to the grandeur that it once knew.

Hot realtor award! Magnificent house. Would zoning allow it to be a BnB? Definitely needs some love and maintenance.
@annabanana503 жыл бұрын
I’m not sure Kara! If someone could buy it, a Bnb might be practical just to afford the overhead. The heat for the house coat $2000 a month. Taxes are reasonable. But you are looking at about $4000 give or take just to live in it, not including what needs to be done in it; roof, some structural fixes, Who knows about the plumbing, etc.

Hi Kara. As a single-family residence, Air BNB would be legal. However, front signage may not be allowed.

Could you have picked stupider background music?
@annabanana503 жыл бұрын
I know right Joann? It should have sweeping orchestral music, not music that would go to the aarp commercial. They really need editing. Probably knocks off like 200k from the asking price with that music alone🤔

I had to fast forward because I could not stand the1960's pony music . Probably not the brokers fault he does not pick the music, but this music does not appeal to anyone with the means to purchase this estate.

For such a magnificent looking home it's really sort of a cramped and cluttered mess on the inside.
