pretty much every repair I am doing you can see how to do yours. Only the seat stands. But I would use panel adhesive to put most of them in. On the pinch seam lots of vice grips hammer dolly and 3m panel bonding adhesive. Should know when I am in FL next within the month or 2 if I am done early I will get by and help you install some stuff.

You can not please everybody. If you are happy, I am happy, you get to drive it so make it your way and let the others show there way. For me, I have learned a lot here. If somebody else want to replace every single panel with new stamped panels, let them. I made my own panels and panted them and coated them with tar. Any given way it is just a matter of time and it will rust again. I liked the air chisel. Better than drilling for weeks. The reality of it is that it is a forty year old bus that was just rusting away and you are getting it going again. I say thanks for showing us your way, I like the engine builds also. Best wishes from south Florida........

thanks so much for the kind words. I had a bus in the condition this will be in when it was done and drove it off and on for 30 years. Sold it recently. 2014 some guys think it wont last but it will just not forever. Nothing does. but maybe in 30 or 40 years someone else will briing her back to life again.

I do not have a bus ( I wish I did) but I have a lot of ideas. would it be possible to find something like 16 gauge or 20 gauge rectangular stock that is about $10.00 for 72 inches. I would think these would be stronger and last longer. They definitely would look better I suppose. I now the purists will yell at me for even suggesting such a thing. When I have built other vehicles such as a ford econoline like Mustie1 is working on that is what I used. I wish I had pictures because it turned out great. You are doing a fantastic job. I have put off starting my channel for too long. My first video is going to be of an awesome barn find. Well, two in one. I found a great old farm tractor (Oliver 550 with a loader) and hidden next to it is a National triplex mower that was used on Golf courses in the sixties. I think they might still be around thank you for giving me great ideas my friend.
@Mikefngarage5 жыл бұрын
yea I would do one like that with tube stock but want to show guys how to do it with the right stuff. If I get one of musties throw aways I will save it with tube stock and it will still look cool. Jason has some finds I might look into in the spring. ha ha. lets see.

@@Mikefngarage very cool my friend. we shall see..As i get moving with my projects and recover from my accident last year. ( I am a PhD chemical engineer and had heated pressurized mixed acids burn 30% of my body and lungs.) I decided to open my own custom chopper and vintage bike along with restorations on old farm and garden tractors shop outside of Philly. Maybe mid life change. who knows...I will be video-ing as many as I can and post them.

I can't wait to find a bus of my own Jimmy!! Starting a channel is awesome, I love finding all these projects that are going on! The best thing that I've found with VWs is there are a million and 1 ways to restore/rebuild/save a VW. As long as we keep them on the road that is all that matters to me.
@jimmypopp26955 жыл бұрын
@@JWClassicVW That is my thought as well. I guess there are ones that lend themselves to perfect restorations and then there are ones that are so far gone that any way you can build or rebuild them so that they turn out nicely is just as good. Thank you for the reply. I am psyched. I just recorded a barn find of a National triplex from 1959 in nan old barn. Major problem is that the audio did not turn out so I will have to over dub it. Thanks again my friend.
@Mikefngarage5 жыл бұрын
@@jimmypopp2695 cool jimmy just bust out your phone and make some videos. they do have editors for the phone. some of the new phones have great stabilizers. I use a pause edit system and clip stacking then sometimes I dub over audio and ad text. Simple and fun to watch. Watch the videos with that in mind and you will see how to make a good video. Being a chemist so many sceptics on the rust conversion products. OMG they think you guys know nothing but I know better myself.

doing it right is dipping as you said. anything else is just get it done. what does it cost to dip? that must be insanely expensive. i don't think i've ever heard of a place that can do that.
@Mikefngarage5 жыл бұрын
no service exists. only at the vw factory
@redshirt-scotty5 жыл бұрын
@@Mikefngarage these people are in eugene oregon. metaldipping.com what do you think? what would be cool would be to have the entire body dipped in a zinc plating tank after acid cleaning. there must be a place that does that.
@redshirt-scotty5 жыл бұрын
this place is in louisiana selectmotors.net they will electro plate with a zinc bath
@Mikefngarage5 жыл бұрын
looks like the parts are done that way. I use electro galvanized for my hand made patch panels. which is the same thing. zinc is the vehicle for that. Most guys use cold steel it is easier to weld. we used to have zinc primers which I think are illegal where i live. the best way would be to have the whole car dipped and electrified after all the welding is done. Would just be so much work. Need to be totally stripped all paint and all parts non metal removed. Seems like it would not be cost effective if anyone can do it.
@JWClassicVW5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I think that would be the only real way to reach all areas... but I would think it would be pretty pricey.

The “treatment “ you use turns everything out of metal black . In my opinion it’s snake oil . Sand the treated areas a bit and you will see that there is normal rust under it

tested myself for over 10 years and no new rust after use. Try again. Chemists are not wrong.

and that is in full outside weather. did a sample area on a rust spot totally exposed to weather and it still has no new rust since 2006 of course coated with paint but still pitted no bubbling underneath.

Had a 1974 bus, hit the rain gutter with a grinder and "extend", and no paint or anything, lasted 2 years outside..lived by lake ontario...45 degree south latitude is more harsh, but lots of rain, snow, moisture.... Sold the bus but it had not rusted anymore.... when it turns black like that, the reaction you wanted happened.

Mike: Could you give a hint as to what you paid for the various buses? I watched one of your videos where you said that the buses out there are usually way over priced, so what is the reasonable price range for one such as this one?

Go to the samba and take a look. Location, and condition. They have been going up the last decade. Seems to have flatten, but still decent demand... I had a 65 with nice roof, but still needed side panel and front floors, listed it on CL for 5K...no engine, not running...and in 15 min, had two calls and the second guy said he would take it. Don't you want to come see it ? No, I want it. That was over 5 years ago. The thing is do you have the time and talent and desire to knock it out here ? If you have to pay people to do all this work, you are miles ahead getting one "done" or as close to done. Paint is $$$, engines are 3K and up. CB charges 10K for an awesome engine. I met someone who had over 40K into a bay window camper (2018), and another with 40K into a bay transporter (2021). The purchase price is a small part of that. Do you even see them come up for sale in your area ? I've found them on Craigslist, and Samba.

@@DanTheManIOM Everything you say is true. My experience with TheSamba and Craig's List ads is that some of the sellers don't bother to reply to requests for more information (details & pictures). Price and location are key to getting a "deal" my son just bought a '60 panel and had it trailered in from Oklahoma.
