I realize what the logic is behind buying these, but if it all works out how long is the pay back, when will your investment start making money for you, along with the freedom they give you? Did you figure out how many nuts and bolts each bin requires? Guess the right number, win a prize!
@WelkerFarms4 жыл бұрын
I can do some very basic math and give a little understanding to the matter. Say we have 50k bushels at harvest and we have no where to store it on the farm. The local grain elevator will take it and store it for us at 8 cents per bushel/month. That is $4,000 a month for them to store it. And we only store in hopes we can sell when prices increase. So it is a gamble as no one really knows when the price will go up. But the longer you pay storage rent the higher the price needs to go to make up for the expenses of storing. 6 months in and your at $24,000 in rent, that is 1/4 of the cost of building these bins. So 6 months of paying someone to store your grain pays for 25 percent of these bins. Now spread those savings over the life of the bins (possibly 100 years) and you are way ahead. Now the other thing to think about is efficiency during harvest, the last thing a farmer wants is combines parked in the field waiting for trucks to return from hauling to the local elevator. It can get busy during harvest and trucks are slow to return to the field. Storage on the farm prevents this from happening so harvest can continue without shutdowns. Another thing is if you haul to a local elevator to store, you are committed to selling with them. If their prices are not as competitive as another facility you cannot get your grain back to sell somewhere else. Once it is dumped it is permanently stored and the clock starts ticking as to when to pull the trigger to sell to avoid rent. I've personally seen the price change more than a dollar in 6 months of waiting to sell, at 50k bushels that is $50,000! That buys a bin in one year! One more thing, you get discounted heavily for grain that is too high in moisture. If we are in a pinch and need to harvest wet grain to avoid an upcoming storm, we can and store it in these bins and turn the fans on to dry it down to an acceptable level eliminating dockage when it comes time to sell. Hopefully this helps shed some understanding as to why we store on our farms.

@@WelkerFarms Thanks, that's a very good explanation. I guess like many aspects of farming (and business) the key is having the capital to pay up front to allow flexibility in the future; costs money to make money. How much storage do you have on your farm and what % of your hoped for harvest can yo store? It seems like you've got alot of bins in different parts. Now, about those bolts! Have the fish been let out of the garage, free to work on their summer tans?
@LKSimbalvr4 жыл бұрын
guessing 1,700 bolts per bin

Also, the cost that goes into two machines like their newer combines is astronomical. If you keep those out of the weather/sun, the savings are unbeatable. The weather is very unforgiving on equipment. Therefore being able to store the equipment inside is a money maker in itself! 👍🏻

Thanks guys for the great video it was awesome to see how they put the bins up. I know what you are talking about when you said it smells like money, back when I farmed I had a 520 ft by 40 ft poultry house and when I would clean it out and spread the manure on my pasture and hay ground that was what I told my neighbors that it smells like money because it saved me a lot of money on fertilizer 👍
@9856CB4 жыл бұрын
So that’s what that top step of the latter is for🤪. And there’s nothing that smells better than horse manure in the morning. Just a thought brings back memories. When I was a teenager I brought home three or four truckloads and spread it in our backyard just before winter and by spring time we had the best lawn in the neighborhood.

Scott and Nick I think that you will love those Westeal bins. We have 2, wish that we had more. Our Westeals are 10k, I really love their doors, no tools need to close or open them. No air leaks. When you run your fans, I would recommend that you open the lid 2 to 4 links of the chain. If you do not open the lid to let the heat & moisture out above the vents, it runs down the side wall. Enjoy your Westeals! I know that I do. Hello from north east Montana. Opheim.

Seeing the manure spreader brought back memories of where I grew in a rural part of NW PA. It was a little community of about 75 people. A dairy farmer lived out the road and planted a lot of corn fields to feed the cows. Every spring he would spread cow manure on the fields before plowing them. Man...it would stink bad in the area for about a couple of weeks. My mom wouldn't even put the laundry outside to air dry, the smell was so bad. Washed the clothes at home and went to the laundromat to dry them.

@robertreznik93304 жыл бұрын
I am only guessing that you put on less than 70# of Urea or what was in the soil. With your good soil moisture your yield limitation will mosty be plant nutrients. Have you ever streamed on N with the Apache sprayer? Then again you may not want a large crop of wheat on the ground.
@RobertWelkerFarmerBob4 жыл бұрын
Put on 100# . Have stream 28% but didn't pencil out do to lack of timely rain
@robertreznik93304 жыл бұрын
@@RobertWelkerFarmerBob Robert I am saying you might need more N if it has been raining often and the forecast is for more. Have you ever used tissue test to find out how you are doing with the total program. If other nutrients are in short supply adding N will not increase yield. When going from a tillage program to no till the crop can be low because you are sequestering available nutrients in soil organic matter from crop residue decay. Putting it into a savings bank. In your area with No-Till, OM can have a half life of 25 years to be mineralized in the future into soluble usable plant nutrients.

Scott, if you don’t make some mistakes from time to time it means you’re not doing anything. Shake it off, fix it, move forward, you’ll do better next time.
