ed said the album is like one big song, so sometimes it feels like we're listening to "the same thing" (although, personally, I can't see it that way). I think it was very brave of him to replace an album that had been in the making for a decade with one that he wrote the songs in just 1 month. as a fan i feel so much closer to him and so proud that he shared these songs. like he said, he just wanted to vent. i already love this album so much 🥺💛

@@theelementalist8472basically, as the last album for his mathematics series of albums, he meant subtract as the best of them all. He worded as "best acoustic album". 10 years in the making with him setting his best acoustic songs aside to be put out in subtract. But after all that has happened to his life recently, he wrote songs for i think he said was 2 weeks, and pretty much decided that all of those songs he was putting aside to be on the original subtract was gonna be replaced by the songs he wrote venting.

As a huge Ed fan (his music helped me through so much during the pandemic) I adored this album. But I totally respect your opinion. I do see what you mean when you said that the songs sound similar. Of course, I hope you'll give it a few more listen (especially for Curtains that I love so much) and I hope it grows on you. 😊 I'm not sure if you've read this, so I'm putting right here what Ed said when he announced Subtract: I had been working on Subtract for over a decade, trying to sculpt the perfect acoustic album writing and recording hundreds of songs with a clear vision of what I thought it should be. Then at the start of 2022, a series of events changed my life, my mental health, and ultimately the way I viewed music and art. Writing songs is my therapy. It helps me make sense of my feelings. I wrote without thought of what the songs would be, I just wrote whatever tumbled out. And in just over a week I replaced a decade's worth of work with my deepest darkest thoughts. Within the space of a month, my pregnant wife got told she had a tumour, with no route of treatment until after the birth. My best friend Jamal, a brother to me, died suddenly and I found myself standing in court defending my integrity and carreer as a songwriter. I was spiralling through fear, depression and anxiety. I felt like I was drowning, head below the surface, looking up but not being able to break through for air. As an artist I didn't feel like I could credibly put a body of work into the world that didn't accurately represent where I am and how I need to express myself at this point in my life. This album is purely that. It's opening the trapdoor into my soul. For the first time, I'm not trying to craft an album people will like, I'm merely putting something out that's honest and true to where I am in my adult life. This is last February's diary entry and making sense of it. This is Subtract. Love your videos and thank you for being honest. A real fandom would get that no one has to love an artist 💛

Sometimes an artist needs to address important, life affecting issues. This is the case currently with Ed. As Ed says in Boat, "there's beauty when it's bleak". I welcome the extra depth to his songwriting, despite it coming from more challenging circumstances. It's called life. If his new songs help us all to connect and to get through the bad times then that's a good thing.

Heyy!! Ed himself said that he wanted this record to be like one big song. Subtract is incredibly cohesive and its not like a specific pop-record like divide which has targeted radio singles like shape of you/castle on the hill. Personally i like it when an album encapsulates one view properly and i really love the cohesive nature. As a kid who has lost his mom at a young age some tracks just hits home. Also this record is a visual album heavily inspired by damien rice's "O" and has 14 individual music videos with connected storylines. I bloody adore ed and fuck i love his entire discography and i just love how he concludes the mathematical era with a pure singer-songwriter album focussing on heavy stuff like grief and depression. Sorry to say i didn't really vibe with your reaction especially with a tune like curtains which is fantastic but i guess we can have different music tastes. Anyways thanks for reacting and you can move on with the stuff you like but for me this record hits home. Lots of love xx

You are incredibly brave for being so honest in your review, haha! I absolutely adore Subtract, and while some parts of your review made me want to say "shut up" (sorry, can't help it 😂), I realized that it's because you listen to music that I don't particularly care for. So, it's fair to say that the music I love might not be your cup of tea. As for the repetitiveness, many people initially felt the same way about Folklore, yet it's still a remarkable album. When you write a lot of songs within a short period of time (just like with this album or Folklore), you tend to go through the same emotional path, but with different perspectives. That's precisely what this album is about. Moreover, it'd not be fair to say that "Curtains" sounds the same as "Borderline" or "Colourblind" as "Life Goes On." The songs are not that alike; it's just that they're all about the same topics, but from different perspectives. In my opinion, to truly appreciate this album, it would be great to watch Ed's docuseries on Disney+ because it provides more context. You probably connected with the album too much, which made the melancholy overwhelming and uncomfortable (and I get it, I'm a freakin psychologist haha). I think it's amazing for you to let you be vulnerable and show it on your channel 🫂. I truly appreciate your honesty because you listen to so much music, and sometimes I wonder if you're just giving glowing reviews to everything. So when you put out a review on something that you seem not to like, it makes me appreciate your content even more. I'm sorry if I came across as negative; part of me was upset about your comments, but the other part of me knows that it's your opinion, and it's valid. Although I didn't agree with your review, I still love your content, and thank you for sharing it. 🫂🙌

I get what you mean about it kind of feeling "the same" (I also get why it would he would want to talk about that a lot, I can only imagine the amount of stress and anxiety he was going through) but after a week and actually playlisting most of the songs they really grew on me (the ones I didn't love already) listening to the album is A LOT, but the songs really shine when you kind of take them off of that (it sounds weird, i know, but it's true idk). Overall it's really beautiful project and the majority of the songs are really good, I just felt like when all put together it does feel a little repetitive (more lirically than productionwise for me) but once they got to my taylor/maisie/sabrina playlist they really popped off on their own! loved your reaction as usual!

I bought the CD album. He is a talent, with a beautiful voice, but you really have to be in a relaxed mood to listen all the way through to the end. What you may not know, Ed Sheeran worked with Dani Filth of the UK Black Metal, Cradle Of Filth to create a track. I was expecting it to be a bonus track. Maybe a lot to do with Record Labels dictating. When the track is released it will be a shocker.

The album is real, real emotion, its life. Ed writes and sings, and expresses extremely well on this album.

This is an album for me that is hard to objectively rank in his discography because of how deeply personal it is. It has some very strong songs and some weaker ones. In a way, it reminds me of DWTD by Demi Lovato, where some songs are just....too specific and too personal that I can't put it in a rankjng where it feels...idk, right? Obviously this record has some of his best vocals and production, but when it comes to the lyrics, this doesn't feel like a record I can revisit in the way I can with his others. It's very heavy and I applaud him for putting his pain into this beautiful art though.

Ed in his documentary said eyes closed was supposed to be a breakup song, which he wrote in 2018.

yeah but Ed's reworked it and meant as more of a tribute for his friend who passed away suddenly, so can be about loss or break ups

Hey! Completely unrelated to subtract, although I agree with you. Wish it did more of a Gracie Abrams 'This is What it Feels Like' kind of song delivery, with crazy twists and heavy production on the second half of otherwise slower and sadder songs. I really think you should consider checking out the Dangerous by Morgan Wallen album! It's absolutely amazing and I think you would be really shocked by it! It's country, i'm sure you've heard of Morgan. Up to you though!

I agree that even though Toughest and Moving are rough around the edges and don’t really fit tonally, they are better songs than, say, Dusty or Colourblind.
