I am of the firm opinion that God only allowed golf to exist because he knew it would one day lead to the creation of a lesbian underground golf mafia death game anime where the characters use what are effectively Jojo's Bizarre Adventure powers to push balls into holes.

The irony of the golf episode being behind a paywall is not lost on me
@darrens37 ай бұрын
Ironically a lof of historical golf courses in England are built intentionally on old historic riverbank lands like ours are, so that if they flooded, which they do, no debris gets into the river and no property is damaged. Now our local golf course has sold off parts of its course to build houses on to people that don't realise its floodland. It all got planning permission despite the reason it was deemed ONLY suitable for a golf course was because of flooding. They completed the Noddy box houses that sold for nearly £500k but are smaller than our Victorian little house worth less than half as much, and they flooded 1 week after. I then explained to the owners that the information regarding the flood likelihood was available free on the govt. climate change flood map and all they said was; "why were they allowed to be built" and "why didn't anyone tell us" my response; capital interests...

1:40 “A golfer is a terrible thing to be” Never a truer word said. Well, maybe not, but golf courses are objectively the most elitist and inefficient use of public green space.
@JSmith198587 ай бұрын
Certainly a waste of space. The two courses owned by the city I live in could be used to house ~60,000 people, yet instead my taxes pay for the upkeep of something I have no interest in using.

There's a golf course in the town of Coober Pedy in the middle of the Australian desert. You're given a little patch of turf to carry around with you to put your ball on, and quite often games are played at night (with glow-in-the-dark balls) due to daytime temperatures being too high.

Not all golf courses are part of exclusive clubs. Many us towns have public courses, and some of those are par-3 (shorter links). The grass on those is often brown rather than green in the summer, but they are very inexpensive. At least they used to be. So cheap that even we as high school students would play for a couple of bucks each, even rent a cart. We made it more interesting by hiding beer in our golf bags :)

Golf commune kitchen discourse aside, the idea of not putting kitchens in them makes a little more sense to me if they were intended to be rich people vacation homes. Staying in a hotel has taught me that I can live just fine without a kitchen if there are nearby restaurants and I have spending money.

The best land use a golf course I ever saw was in Glenview Illinois, where they built a 9 hole golf course and driving range on top of the old landfill. It has to be the best land use possible for a landfill. There are no trees, and it has a distinct enormous sand dune vibe with long grass, and the course outside the green uses the naturally occuring grass, just well maintained and rolled.

I, of course, refer everyone to the George Carlin bit on golf courses, but will also say: Golf isn't a sport. Sports imply any form of physical exercise and if you can completely veto the most *basic* of exercises (walking) for a fee and get drunk on the field, then your gear shouldn't be next to the equipment of real sports like tennis, basketball, football (american or international) or baseball. FUCKING BASEBALL MOVES FASTER THAN GOLF! And let it be known, I like baseball, but there's no denying there are some pretty tubby players.

isn't chess a sport?
@ericb.43137 ай бұрын
@@limejet if it is, it shouldn't.
@randomguy5557 ай бұрын
@@ericb.4313 I mean, it depends on your definition of sport, and clearly I've seen plenty of definitions that would include "mind games" in that. But even going by the physical exercise definition, at least on a real professional level people like Tiger Woods do seem to take the exercising and practice as seriously as any other sport, and they seem to be much better than the average golfer. On the other hand, it's not like there's anything stopping you from playing those other sports drunk and with someone to collect your ball for you, it's just you'll be no match for people actually good at the game. So I'd still certainly count it as a sport... though whether it's a good sport is another matter. Oh and I agree with everything said George Carlin said.

@welltheresyourproblempodca1465 Great work as always. Golf is boring as shit to play let alone watch and you all have made it bearable, albeit for only a few minutes. But I digress… With Dune Part Deaux coming out soon and the obvious political and engineering connections between the story and your podcast, have you all(y’all?) considered doing an episode on something fictional? I think Dune would be a wonderful subject for an upcoming episode. I for one, would LOVE to see it dissected by your technical intellect and skewered with your carving fork-esque wit. I mean, c’mon. You commies must appreciate or be familiar with the book, right? The Baron vs. The Fremen is an obvious analogue to the gluttonous pig-like oink of Capitalism in contrast with the stern, stoic, selfless, and oft tragic bleat of communism upon our geopolitics. What’s more leftist than, “a man's flesh is his own; the water belongs to the tribe”? The ultimate utilitarian left society! None of this Trotskyite nonsense of human contentment and wellbeing! “Behold, as a wild ass in the desert, go I forth to my work.” As so you all would be so kind to do as well. By doing an episode on Dune, please. Pretty please? Love the show as always either way. Keep up the always great and always hilarious work! Signed with love and bountiful affection. - Capitalist Pig-Dog
