My grandma had a Pinto at one point, grandpa was a doctor in private practice at this point and she drove over to visit him. She parked in a parking garage full of luxury cars befitting private practice doctors trying to one-up each other, when she came back to go home her car was stolen.

My mother had a Ford Pinto. And yes, it did meet a fiery death, but not from the back. Her boyfriend at the time had tried to change the oil and evidently made an absolute pig's breakfast of the job because while stopped at a stop sign, she noticed flames licking out from under the hood. Luckily, she had plenty of time to get out, but the car was ruined. Needless to say, that boyfriend didn't last long. It's true what some folks say: The Ford Pinto was not named after a small horse. It was named after a bean.

I would love to hear an episode on various EPA regulations backfiring! Regulations affect engineering systemically, and can cause far more damage than a single major collapse.

The back and forth reminded me of a disiplinary meeting where a colleague had whinged to management about me. When they were listing off the things I was meant to have done to him I asked 'and did I shit his pants, too?'. The awkward boot lid on the early Pinto wasn't unique. The Austin Allegro had the same awful layout.

The first car I ever drove regularly was a silver Pontiac Astre station wagon with a manual transmission (that I took my driving test in). The Astre was the Pontiac version of the Vega, the GM version of the Pinto. I later destroyed the car by slamming into a suddenly appearing island on F street after a show at the (old) 9:30 club in DC. Love you guys. Thanks!

2:57 The Denim Gremlin was copied by Volkswagen for their 1974 line of "Special Edition" Beetles where the cars had slightly different interiors and rally trim running along the bottom of the door to the rear fender. A Jeans Beetle was the 1200 cc basic car in yellow or blue with jeans seats and the rally stripe, any of the extras were the standard extras depending on where the car was sold. They also did a "Big Beetle" and "City Beetle" for the variants of Superbeetle, each with separate color schemes and custom seats. They relied on these gimmicks because West Germans were sick of the Beetle by the 1970s, but business was booming from Canada to Argentina (and across Europe still, and parts of Africa) and so they had to stick with it until the first Golf cars came out in 1977 (Americans know that car as the Rabbit.)

EPA regulations that backfired, OH BOY, let's discuss RCRA and its impacts on petroleum remediation and brownfields reutilization! Then there's the whole resultant "Contained In" policy, which is basically an unofficial policy of sticking fingers in ears and humming loudly to avoid RCRA derailing cleanups, and oh yeah, is also officially the unofficial policy in all 50 states! Rocz, I NEED that episode, and I'll sign up for the Patreon if you make it!

@Bluecho43 ай бұрын
@@Frisco1355 ^This. The Pinto was a car that looked great, that was unexpectedly dangerous. She cleaned up well, even if she was still a mess inside. The Cybertruck was always seen as a dangerous joke. Time has only revealed new layers of failure we kind of already suspected. He's a slob that shows up in a stained t-shirt, drunk.
@Benu543213 ай бұрын
I think Victoria pointed out in the EV episode that the Tesla Model 3 has killed more people in fires than the Pinto, with less total vehicles produced. The Model 3 has burned two more people to death than the Pinto (42 to 40 respectively) , while there are 500,000 less Model 3s produced. I think the Cybertruck has the potential to rapidly take the top spot if we include people testing the 'bulletproof' materials.

I'm guessing y'all know the lithium ion battery burns way hotter than a gasoline-powered car? And is much harder to put out? ...I'm really hoping battery technology improves-I read something about _water-based_ batteries being in development. Unfortunately, the internal corrosion problems with the water-based batteries aren't worked out.
