I truly love how much sophistication and respect Tom Welling has as an actor that has played this romantic interest for several years to Erica Durance. Yes, they are co-workers and people may have shipped them in real life and blurred those lines but at the end of the day…this is a man that is not only speaking professionally but always giving her props and kudos and it’s so refreshing to see dynamic amongst costars

Erica made an explosive impression on the audience. That's why they signed her on for the rest of the other seasons. She killed that role and nailed the character.

To me Erica Durance = Lois Lane. That was the first impression she made in the season opening scene. No convincing needed. She nailed that character right from the start. Season 4, episode 1 is still my all-time favorite because of it. And now that I think back on it, I think because unlike a lot of other portrayals, she was not just a pretty face destined to scream "Superman!", but an independent strong woman, as most women in real life are.

How in the world would the producers ever think that Lois Lane would be a ‘temporary’ character.

Easily! The before Daily Planet story of Superman was the Lana Lang & Clark Kent story but thankfully, it ended with Lois!

Because at the time Warner Brothers didn’t want Lois Lane to be on television as the character was going to be on the big screen. It was mainly studio politics not the showrunners.

Yeah, I initially thought Lois would be like Perry White from Season 3 - a peek into the future but not an ongoing part of the series. Erica was just too damn good. She ironically enough turned Lois Lane into a “breakout character” on a Superman show.

They may have paid her nothing but what she lost in pay she got back in Fandom many times over and then some. She was loved right from the very start by almost everyone. I remember fans trying to start a campaign on the message boards to email the studio to let them know they wanted Lois back for good. They also swamped the official Smallville message board (yes they had one and it was an awesome place to get early clues about future episodes). When they announced she was going to be a regular for season five the fans were overjoyed.

Being a Canadian actor, I can tell you that is 1000% the situation. Not only do American productions get tax benefits when they are up here, but they also underpay the actors, sometimes more than 50%. And productions hiring Canadian talent to come down to the U.S. is basically the same thing. So if an American actor gets, say $10,000 for an episode, a Canadian being brought down will get, if lucky, 3K-5K.

Erica Durance is probably my second favorite Lois only behind Teri Hatcher. She was instantly a presence on this show and it's a shame they treated her in a bad way but as I've gotten older you hear more and more of these bad experiences for actors and musicians and it's foul! I didn't know if I'd like anyone besides Lana being Clark's interest even though I knew it would end up being Lois eventually but Erica weened me off of Lana. 😁 Maybe it was the young love for Clark. Anyway, Smallville was da 💩!

100% true... Same with Diana Bang in The Interview.. Paid fractions of what Rogan and Franco made despite being in MOST of the scenes in half the movie... A few other bit parts that were smaller were paid way more because they were fly in jobs and she was a "local hire." Makes me sad to know this while rewatching the film..

She might now have been in the opening credits, but she was credited as a special guest star, and that's usually quite expensive. I don't think it's a budget thing, I really think they thought they could only get her for a couple episodes, but then it worked so well that they brought her back. You kinda see this in the show where they write her off just for her to be thrown out of university later on so they could find a reason to bring her back in.

Agree 100%. However I totally thought Jensen was Canadian too. I’m sitting here going, Jensen, from Los Angeles? Really? But yeah. I also think they didn’t let go of their Clana obsession until season 9, so they were willing and able to disregard the character of Lois Lane and hold onto Lana for Clark. Season 9. Oh my goodness. Yeah, I’ll never get over how long that took.

That the guys aren't sure Ms Durance was paid properly, shows that she's never discussed it with them, at the time that would be contractual, but now, shows that she doesn't want her freinds upset at the disparity that came from the producers screwing people in the contracts.
