Why people are getting upset about this? It just exposes and highlights their own insecurities. Yes, maybe there is a bit of judgement here, but it's not surprising, the boy just turned 20. This is the age where you start to be driven by strong convictions and become a bit extreme and passionate about these, fighting for it. Then, with experience, you realize - f you are smart enough - that life is more complex, there is no single truth, not a single path to follow but potentially several. That you should find the one that suits you best but another individual may follow another path, and that would indeed be the best option for him. When you realize this, you become more tolerant and forgiving, more benevolent, while staying true to your own beliefs and values. Wemby will get there very fast, he is already so thoughtful and balanced, so willing to learn from others.

In france it's a pretty common point of view actually, the phrase "boire pour oublier" (drink to forget) is very common to say. Drugs are all forbidden (weed for example) so they are viewed really negatively too

He's just being honest. He was brought up in an environment where drugs and alcohol is a form of escapism. Remember both his parents were athletes so these forms of recreation is a really detrimental for them.

Yeah it feels like a relatively normal answer for someone who's been put into a professional athlete mindset at the youngest age. Honestly he mostly comes off as a bit confused or inexperienced, jumping from party and alcohol to "compensating" and trauma. Many great athletes will indulge from time to time without underlying issues or trauma. It's just fun.

I felt the same way as him when I was 18: why would I ever drink? And then I took part in a drinking contest and it was fun 😂 I absolutely understand where he's coming from: he built a coherent web of reasons why he shouldn't do things that would hinder his career. French people are very honest and direct and that’s why Americans think they are rude, arrogant and judgmental. I don’t think the statement he made was meant to be a comparison or a judgment about others. I think he is very introspective and he was taking that point from the conversations that he has had with himself about his own strengths and deficiencies. This kind of statement would not be at all alarming or insulting in Paris. He also might find the personal questions that Americans ask a bit uncomfortable. The French generally don’t ask those kinds of questions if they aren’t close friends and family. They don’t engage in much small talk. He’ll learn to keep American sensibilities in mind eventually, but right now he doesn’t understand American culture completely. French culture doesn’t have a puritanical foundation and tends to be much more philosophical. The French dancers, Les Twins, have been performing on the road all around the globe for about twenty years, since they were sixteen, and they are very careful to make it clear that they are accepting of all all kinds of people without comparisons, yet there remain a lot of judgements about them for some of their French mannerisms and expressions. Les Twins don’t drink, us drugs or smoke and they have an incredible work ethic. They dance and workout every day. They stay focused on creating and improving every day and give their all to their craft, performing even when they are in pain and exhausted. They are very careful to maintain good eating habits. They encourage others to to take good care of themselves. Les Twins grew up in a dangerous and poverty stricken area in a French suburb in a large family without a present father. Their coach and mentor, Abibuo "Playmo" Kebe instilled healthy physical and emotional values in them when they were very young. Recently, in an interview, Les Twins talked about not drinking as a way they were taught to survive in a neighborhood where they needed to be alert and conscious every second. Laurent Bourgeois, one of the twin dancers, went through a long period of time getting beaten up every day while he was walking home from school, despite the fact that he was very tall for his age. There are many similar neighborhoods in metropolitan Paris which I’m sure Victor knows and he was on his own and traveling as a young teenager when he played for Ansvel. Victor is more sheltered now, but did mention that he did have to grocery shopping alone, which made it clear that he had to take care of himself at a young age. It takes a tremendous amount of self discovery and discipline to succeed when one is very young. Kids like Les Twins and Victor couldn’t afford distractions. I hope this comment lends some context for Victor’s words, because I see how hard he works to bring joy into people’s lives.

They began dancing on the streets of Paris at age 18 to pay for food and their next train tickets. Alicia Keys discovered Laurent Bourgeois when he was dancing alone on à Paris Street and she asked him to dance in her show that very night. He got his twin brother, Larry, fired from his job that day and brought him to dance for her show too. After that Larry joined Laurent on the road as a professional dancer at age 16. There’s a reason they wore so many heavy silver rings on their fingers. They still protect each other. Les Twins are light-skinned like Wemby, and are 6’3". Sounds like a young man that was given excellent parenting and mentorship, which has prepared him for adulthood and stardom. There's nothing to hate here. If you take issue with HIS opinion on alcohol, drugs, partying, etc. then that says more about you than Wemby. It takes most young men a decade or more of bad decisions through their 20s/30s to come to the same conclusion he has at 20 years old. This is what true role models look and sound like.

I think he didn't elaborate his answer enough. Obviously he doesn't need to compensate as he was well-raised (also have parents that share the same work) and had/have a supportive environment outside of his family, basically at his work everybody pay attention to him, his well-being and his life project as he is paid millions for it. He might have less negative emotions pent up or traumas than most of the population in America and developped healthier habits due to that. So sure he doesn't have the same view of the world as an average American possibly raised differently, with less support, struggling by working multiple jobs, be worried about being sick (because of the financial impact), etc. On the other end you can have lots of preoccupations, struggles, traumas and still only want to have a good time alone or with friends moderately without absolutely needing alcohol or else to enjoy yourself or "have a wonderful night". At the end of the day we all here around the world try to live our lives the best we can with our experiences and the difficulty of life. Lots of love from France, Wish you the best Clan !

Perhaps you are correct. I think that it is clear that what he was trying to say. He wasn’t judging it seems that he speaking for himself not for anyone else. I think what he meant to really say is that some people don’t need to party, go to clubs or use drugs for fun. Some people don’t also need to use those things to fill the empty void within themselves. He tried to set an example that you can also have fun or heal without using things that may or may not be helpful. There’s nothing wrong for trying to be an example for something great!

I’m French. We have total different rules and behaviours around these. Much more tolerance. For example, you can buy wine or alcohol anywhere even if you are only 18. Kids 16 can even legally drink beer in a bar if they want. We have no rules as strict as in the US. So, I can guarantee you that Wemby doesn’t challenge you drink alchool with moderation. He probably drinks wine from time to time hinself (he is french 😉) etc. Without saying it, he obviously refers to abusing of these. It is simply that he doesn’t master english to put nuances, and doesn’t want to give a msg wrongly interpreted by kids

I grew up in a household where I was allowed to drink a little beer and little wine in grade school. My mother was French. I actually can’t tolerate over a tablespoon of alcohol as an adult, so I rarely (once in a few years) drink even that much. I hate the instant migraine headaches. I’ve always been grateful to not have the temptation because cocktails look so interesting.

He never said he doesn't ever drink or wont ever attend a party. He said other people warned him about getting caught up in those things, i.e. doing them to excess and allowing that to derail his life. A lot of times EXCESSIVE drug use, alcohol consumption and partying are symptoms of a larger problem and people use those things to escape whatever that larger problem is. I believe he was saying he works to address those larger problems so he never turns to excessive drug use, alcohol consumption, or excessive partying as a means of escape. This wasn't judgmental, it was just really commentary on human nature.

As a Prevention and Awareness specialist, I observe through linguistics that French speaking Victor Wembanyama is referencing the conversations that we as facilitators often have with human beings who live in spaces where your brain constantly experiencing natural highs. For those human beings, often athletes, there is a subconscious tendency to gravity towards stronger quick gratifying synthetic highs. I understand him to say in this clip, that he has been taught how to be honest with his own unaddressed trauma by deciding to never ever participate in anything recreational, where synthetic highs are prevalent. Rewind it. As journalists and social media influencers, I ask that you be sensitive to English translations from foreign speaking individuals. He is not going to formulate his English sentence structure like you and I. So please hold off on judgment without confirming the message along with the intent. KEEP SOARING🙏🏾❤️
