I went to the drags here in Perth, WA, last night. First run was 14.777 @ 88mph (142kph) with a 2.283 60'. After ten runs, my best was 14.345 @ 90mph (145kph) with a 2.082 60'. Was my first time at the drags on a bike, and have only been riding for about 8 months. Iv had a 500r for over 2 years and they are very fun little bikes you can easily lift the front up at the lights if u take of right, you need to be in bout 4 to 5k revs when you drop the clutch but by drop I mean smoothly realise at the same time as powering on, if you just hold it at 4k revs and drop it your bike will just jolt forward and probe hurt the manhood on more than one level. its great how smooth it comes down as I shift into 2nd even the first time when I wasn't expecting it it just felt right lol I know you shouldn't pull a bike up in 1st but when I wanna gun it just wants float. if I don't time it right the front tyre just floats and bounces until I'm in 3rd but I do only weigh 61kg but I don't think 20 or 30 kgs matter considering all the weight in sportsbikes is in the front. ok so all in all iv had a cbr500r 2014 tri colour for 2 years as a daily commuter as its my only transport and I haven't ever had a problem that I didn't cause anyway lol, in my opinion its the best learner bike by a long shot my cousin has a ninja300 2015 and the 500 shits on that not so much in speed but in strain on the engine the 500s vtwin doesn't need to rev out to go fast I never even hit redline before I change unless I drop a gear but the 300 has to rev a 4k to fkn take of and than sounds like its screaming going 60kh but on the 500 you don't even need to touch to throttle to start moving and can sit in 3rd at 4k rev going 60. alright il stop now

1st to 2nd is really easy to miss on the 500r. It's a wide gap. You have to really pull compared to the other gears and just out of habit you get lazy on the street. Really cool that you had this opportunity though. It would have to be fun even just screwing around. I've always wanted to do it in a car or on my bike, but I'd be worried about embarrassing myself. :D And there are no real drag strips near me (but once a year there's a drag racing event held at an airport 3 hours North).

If it was a car it would be considered quite speedy. Great job, nothing like ripping into it legally.

+Payehn Hey - thanks for watching! Short answer, yes! I think the CBR500R is fine as a first bike. When the 500 first came out a few of the review testers got 13.5's. When I'm going flat out on mine I don't even bother using the clutch it's much faster
@WeNeedASaga8 жыл бұрын
+Nick Seydler Yeah agreed, clutchless is the way to go. And yeah I'm sure someone with more practice than me could lower the time quite a bit! Good to hear it's capable of 13.5 in the right hands...

Is the 500 a good bike for a starter or should I get the 650 for a starter bike?
@WeNeedASaga8 жыл бұрын
+Mar “Marmac” Mac In my opinion yeah, the 500 is a good bike for a starter - I got mine with 1 day riding experience and it's been great. I've not ridden any 650's so I can't really say but they seem very popular with new riders too - for example Suzuki's SV650 and the Ninja 650 are probably worth a look too if you're looking to keep the bike for a while...

Next time you go, don't bother with the clutch lever going up the gears! you'll save a bit of time, just use your foot and snick it up each change. Check youtube for technique but it's a no-brainer really... just remember to use the clutch lever coming back down after :)

No offense but, your shifting on the strip kinda sucked. Too slow, which is why you were getting beat by others. If you shifted faster and spent less time between them you would have gone faster.
@daxwax18 жыл бұрын
agreed. clutchless shifts and a better launch might get you into the 13s.
@WeNeedASaga8 жыл бұрын
yeah there's room to improve. The clutch bite is soft as, which results in a lot of slip when you try to launch it hard. Meh, it's a bit of fun.

Try redlining it on all gears man
@WeNeedASaga8 жыл бұрын
the bike makes peak torque at 7,000 rpm and tapers off after that, so there's no point revving it to redline...
@WeNeedASaga8 жыл бұрын
Your first sentence is exactly my point. Torque starts to drop after 7,000, so yes you're getting more power with engine speed after 7k but only a tiny bit, and you're working the engine hard to do it. If you shift at 7.5k, thus keep the bike between 5k and 7.5k, you're maximising your torque under the curve. And let's not forget good old mechanical sympathy - yes I can rev the crap out of the bike, but is it really worth it for another 2hp? I'm not racing anyone so in my opinion, no.
