Back around 1980 I worked at a dealership as a lot boy, etc. I wound up taking on the responsibility of rustproofing the new cars that came in. The joke was all the cars were already rustproofed at the factory. When I asked why I was doing it again, I was told because it only cost $30 to apply but the dealer charged $300 as an option. What was really bad about it was I had to drill holes in the doors and fenders to apply the rustproofing. This created metal shavings which only made the vehicle rust faster. There was no way to prevent because the metal shavings would fall inside the doors and body panels. I didn't work at the dealership for very long. I couldn't handle the dishonesty.

Sarah - 01:49 - I have in the past for cleaning wheels and wheel wells and such, attached firm plastic brush heads (once used a toilet brush with a solid handle for my aging alloy wheels) adapted to fit a battery drill. It WORKS WONDERS, and different sized heads get into all sorts of different sized areas and angles! 👍😏 😎🇬🇧

My guess is the undercoat is actually factory applied PVC and was baked on. I worked on the production line of an auto manufacturer in the 80's and that's how it was done. Your decision to freshen it up with bed liner is probably the best way to go.

you should use Chip Foose's method on the rear bumper and delete the bolt heads, and fill in the bumperette holes, so its just all chrome. Have the bolt hidden on the back side. It's a classic move that Chip always does on his builds and I've always loved it because its so clean.

When we clean inside the wheel wells, we use a concrete mixing tub, a garden pump sprayer bottle, warm-to-hot water, soap (simple green) mix in spray bottle with warm water, one of those detail brushes you used on the inside and towels. Don't need gallons & gallons of water and everything just drips into the tub and makes for easy clean. 👍

Keep the stainless rocker trim - DEFINITELY! It’s those little details that make early Japanese cars so cool looking. It would be like spray painting a classic silver-faced ‘70s Marantz stereo receiver black - ugh!

It’s a source for corrosion and looks tacky.
@bryandickerson5365
@bryandickerson5365 Жыл бұрын
@@SarahnTuned Yes, it is a corrosion vector, but you have ways to alleviate that issue, but I respectfully disagree about “tacky”. You’ve got a vision and should follow it, but I truly believe that you may eventually come around to see the beauty of vintage Japanese bling. I removed the stainless from my Datsun 510’s rockers decades ago and now realize that the original designers knew proportion and detail way better than I did. Wax on, wax off….

Your cleaning for sure is more than I've seen on other car build channels. I think it seems like something that you don't HAVE to do and it's kinda glossed over. But I think of it as you are removing any potential for further corrosion on the already old metal/other parts. You could find something that's hiding maybe? There literally is no cons to doing it so it makes sense just to clean it like it was just assembled.

Great video! I scraped alll of the under coating from under my 65 Plymouth Valiant and 67 Barraciuda. I did this because I did not the first time I “restored “ the 67 Barracuda and the front fenders eventually rusted out from th e underside because water had gotten iunder the undercoating. Your 49 year old Toyota looks a lot cleaner with no rust so you probably don’t have to worry about such things. I used a gasket scraper , a wire brush and a propane torch, it was hard work and i looked like coal miner afterwards!

Hey Sarah, you might find it very beneficial if you somehow were able to purchase a hot water pressure washer. I make up my own spray with pine sol and sodium hydroxide. It completely erradicates the grease and dirt. Leaves it spotless and ready for paint and smells great after. Make sure you wear the appropriate gear cause this shyt burns when it hits the skin. It cleans the area you are working in as well
