@@DNReacts "The Blindside" movie is taken from the book of the same name by Michael Lewis who had written many other books, including "Moneyball." The Blindside also refers to the QB's back side. So a right handed QB's left tackle protects his blind side. The Left Tackle became the highest paid position in the NFL for a long time after Lawrence Taylor. A little context for why it is considered so important.

The listed weight for lineman back in the 90s was almost always way underreported for some reason. There is no way Allen was only 325. I played defensive line at 310lbs in college. I can assure you Larry Allen was a lot closer to 400lbs than 325lbs. Same for his former teammate Nate Newton who was always comically listed at around the same weight.

The video says he played offensive guard but he actually played both guard and tackle. In fact, he played 4 of the 5 positions on the offensive line (left guard, right guard, left tackle, right tackle). He was a natural guard but due to his physicality was able to play any of the positions at a very high level. He played offensive tackle his rookie season due to injuries to the Cowboys offensive line, most notably moving to right tackle after Erik Williams got in a car wreck. At the time Erik Williams was considered the best offensive lineman in the league.

Guys, Napa is wine country in Northern California. It was a different planet from Compton in L.A. Take a poor kid from the worst hole in L.A. and plop him down in one of the wealthiest, white, foreign places and it just shouldn't have worked. He was determined and the family and school staff was also determined to help him fulfill his dreams. He wanted it and recognized a "leg-up" when he saw it. Remarkable person. tackles are on the outside of the O-line, the center who snaps is in the middle, and the left and right guard are next to the center. the big left tackle is known as the "blind side" because he keeps a right handed qb from getting blasted in his back, the right tackle has to be extremely stout- because strong side runs go his way, left guard is mostly there for pass protection- but also has to open lanes, and right guard has to do everything and be a lead blocker for the run too. the entire O-line has to be able to notice the defense before the play, then pull/push/get double teamed/stop a blitz/open lanes, lead etc. they have to anticipate whats coming and be very quick off the ball w great hand/footwork- and most importantly have ice cold balance and be able to move to the next block after they crush their initial objective- they are always looking for a next victim while staying in the confines of the rules. they may look tubby, but their core strength is steel and their backs are titanium. a o-lineman gets beat. a lot. they must be able to move on and do better every snap and not show any weakness, because they can't be targeted as the weak link in the castle wall.

Think of a guard as ‘guarding’ the quarterback. The defensive side of the line generally consists of Defensive Tackles, who play inside, and Defensive Ends, who play on the outside.

Hello guys! In American football keep in mind that the interior lineman positions names are the same on both sides of the ball. The difference is that a defensive end will lineup down or standing up, but plays defense only. The offensive end blocks, catches passes and he occasionally runs around to get the ball and runs over everyone. Obviously the offensive ends are a bit more athletic with better hands usually, with the exception of Larry Allen.

Napa Valley is in the north of California - north of San Francisco Bay. It's a beautiful rural region known for its winemaking, and somewhat of a playground of the rich and famous. Of course there's plenty of hard working ordinary farmers, but a lot of the land- and winery-owners are famous (Mario Andretti, Francis Ford Coppola, John Elway, Joe Montana, Yao Ming, Arnold Palmer, Tom Seaver, etc.). Compton is part of Los Angeles, down in southern California (350 - 400 miles away from Napa) and known for being a largely black and working-class/poor neighborhood in those days.

Compton is a suburb of Los Angeles with what many would call a ghetto. Napa Valley is north of San Fransisco Bay in the middle of California’s wine country. Without great offensive linemen blocking, quarterbacks would always be sacked and running backs would never have holes to run through. Believe it or not, both offensive and defense linesmen are selected in the first round of a draft as much as quarterbacks and running backs, that is how important they are.

Just so you know, it's often times hard to find highlights of offensive linemen. That position group is often unheralded, except in the draft. The fans often times don't understand what's happening in the trenches, because it's a game within the game. The offensive linemen really play a separate game then the one you think about when you think of football. They even have separate play calls (blocking assignments) than the one that's announced by the QB in the huddle that are called by the Center at the line of scrimmage. The only time the offensive linemen have any publicity if if they mess up, or, as in this case, on the rare occasions that they get to do something athletic. Also, offensive linemen, particularly Left Tackles, will be highly sought after in the draft. There has been a few drafts where Left Tackles were drafted first over all, and many more times that offensive linemen have been drafted in the top five. The NFL coaches and front offices know how valuable they are.
