Assessing Wesley Vissers' physique during his 2018 Chicago Pro victory... is this the closest thing we've seen to a vintage Arnold Schwarzenegger?

well, he looked classical. schwarzenegger and the other 70s bodybuilders were never freaky cobditioned. he honestly had a more "old school" than most of today's classical physique competitors that go onstage at 6% bf. i think he deserves this win.

Saptarshi Mazumder yes i get your point. yet, that's why we have open bb : to keep yhe evolution going. classical should be meant to recall old school looking. anyway, it's just my humble opinion. :)

I'd say Wesley is a work in progress. He needs to gain about 10 more pounds of muscle, mostly in his back, triceps, and some in his legs. If he got slightly bigger than the weight requirement then dieted down, he'd gain some back detail, sweep in his quads, and get a better sweep in his triceps to match his biceps. If he does all that, he can match and perhaps exceed Arnold some day. Time will tell. Something to note, his calves are excellent. I think that helps balance his legs and stops them from looking small.
@Tomn8er

Monsoon117 his calves are excellent in terms of the size and low insertions I agree, but something about the lack of detail holds them back imo

Mick Sowden great point, I can’t remember if it was the 09 Olympia or not but they had this deep blue/black background and it really helped accentuate the competitors silhouettes, v-taper and helped balanced the heavy front lighting. Like people know where they are...we don’t need an Affliction-style gaudy event title script with all the sponsers and shit vomited behind the competitors. It baffles me that this is such a frequent issue and it truly breaks my heart that there isn’t a standardized lighting setup, so many guys of this era get fucked over by shit lighting (every 90s show footage I’ve seen looked great, don’t get what happened).

Thanks for the analysis. For me what stands out about someone like Vissers is that there is great ambiguity in what "classic" means and what era of classic people prefer. For me I would go even further back for Vissers comparisons. He reminds me of a 40s or 50s bodybuilder in a black & white photo. While I like that look it's not my favorite and I don't think he does anything to update it. He's just a throwback for me. But perhaps I'm biased because of his tanning, the lighting, etc. Someone like Bumstead takes me back to the late 80s and early 90s which is my preferred era. He's reminiscent of Berry DeMey, but there's something modern that adds a twist. His lat spread is jaw dropping, for example. Laureus also takes me back to that era by reminding of Brian Buchanan and Thierry Pastel but with some potential to be unique. His structure is out of this world. I'll be curious to see where the judging ends up. If it moves in the Vissers direction, then that's a wrap for me. But if folks like Bumstead, Breon (that back!), Laureus, etc. continue to be rewarded I think the division has a bright future.

goldburnm What I don't like about classic is that the judges haven't figured out what the judging criteria is going to be for the class. I think conditioning should absolutely be counted, for instance. Someone posted that Wesley is almost 6'4, so there's room for him to make massive improvements over the years, improving his v-taper and quad sweep. I love Wesley's physique but IMO he was gifted this win. If he comes in the same shape and conditioning to the Mr. O, he'll struggle to make top 10.
@goldburnm

Wesleys balance and flow is far superior. You want a classic look that is a close to True classic physique? This is the guy. If you didnt know who he was, and you saw his posing photos you would think he was literally from the classic age. The rest of these guys, including the Olympia lineup last year look like modern bodybuilders trying to recreate the classic look. Wesley looks like he hopped out of a time machine.

I like your assessement, he really is complete, but also like you mention he needs that muscle maturity to come with his frame, when that comes he will be dangerous for sure! I think from a classic stand point he won comfortably. The other dude was a lot more conditioned but like Nick strength and power said he just looked like a downsized 212 guy. Wesley looked amazing and had a great showing! Although I think Amit should have been the won to win. Yes, Wesley looks classic, but you can't judge a CP competition solely based on who has the most classic shape and structure. This is still a bodybuilding show!!!!!!! If the judges are strongly rewarding shape and structure over other characteristics, in the end their just rewarding genetics. The best bodybuilder should always win. The Competitor who has the most balanced physique from the front, the side, and the back. The bb with the best balance of conditioning, symmetry, fullness, and proportion should win.I think that was Amit. Wesley is Classic af tho! and really does resemble the great Arnold Schwarzenegger in multiple ways. Has a huge future in this division. Confident he'll place well at this years Mr.O. Just has to bring up those legs. Legs don't have much shape or sweep.

Arms? Seriously? Have you seen Chris's arms? Not only his biceps are his weak part but also uneven, even one side of his lats lacks in comparison with the other. Wesley's chest and biceps are perfectly even and huge. Of course its not Wesley's best shape yet. And yes he applied Pro Tan (go check his video on his channel, its just it was his first show like this so shit happens but still he was the one who deserved the win). I really believe in this guy. He's got great genetics and the most proportionate shape that classic bodybuilder should have! You are right.. he reminds me of Arnold Schwarzenegger too, but don't compare him like that. He's still working on him. He's pretty close to idea of bodybuilding Arnold had in mind. He's on right path. And I'm sure he will achieve glory on this path. If he works more on his legs and overall conditioning (which he is working on for sure) he is definitely going to win at Mr. Olympia 2018. I'm damn sure he will.

I'm still unsure of all the categories being used to measure classic physique but I have an idea that his posing helped him here immensely! While I agree that he looked pale compared to the rest, if you check out his interview afterwards you can see just how much pro tan he had on. As for your comparisons to Arnold, I'm sorry but even Arnold was not Arnold when he first came over from competing in Europe. He was puffy, his shoulders needed to come up, & it just took some time before he was at a level to win over people like Sergio O. Give Wesley time to bring up his over all physique & I'm sure we'll see great things from this kid soon.

Not acting as an apologist for Wesley, but considering he flew in from the Netherlands a few days prior to the contest, it's no surprise that he wasn't dialed-in. He should have prepared to be in the area for at least 10 days. Maybe if he does the O, he'll give himself the gift of more time. As for him not having any weak points... That's a very generous statement, but Wesley himself knows he's got stuff to work on, primarily his leg biceps...which suck. There's no roundness there, no fullness. For me, he needs to add size to his already good 20" arms. (He measured them recently on his channel.) An inch would hit the spot nicely. I'd also like to see some topography to those fuckin monsters he's got going on below the knees. ("Those aren't calves...they're COWS!!!") As well, some better development in his lower lats. Finally, I think he needs to take a good look at his posing, his stage presence. Specifically his up-and-down presentation. His linear physique means that he should use posture and limb position to his advantage. That is, @ 2:21, there is no dynamism to how he's standing. (See the difference: www.flickr.com/photos/47756196@N00/283960507) As a P.S., I do think that he should schedule some workout time at some prime North American gyms...maybe even getting together with Grimes and/or Bumstead. After all, Arnold used to train with _everyone_ .Well, save for 1980's Mr. O debacle...

The lighting is poor, the lighting in older school Olympia shows were really good, it enhanced their depth and crevices of each muscle group. I can only say what I've said under Nick's video the other day: personally, and strictly on my _personal_ opinion, I don't really like Wesley's physique. Yes, he looks great. Yes, he is quite complete. Yes, he is classical. He is also a cool dude, he has a great channel, so everything adds up. But ultimately, especially his FDB is _weird_ af. His rib cage looks awkward and his abdominals and lower torso is way, way too convex and blocky for my liking. The other thing is what you've said that he is a jack of all trades, no weaknesses but no strong points. How do you judge someone like that? So dunno...he may be, or not even may be, he _is_ a strong contender, and can crack top 6 at the olympia. But I personally don't want him being the winner or anywhere near yet... Hell, even Mr. Propahh (damn, that stupid name though...) is more of my liking, while Wesley being way more complete at this moment, at least Steve has some crazy bodyparts. And even most classic bbs had some personal aces in their hand, Franco had a crazy chest, Arnold had bicep and chest, Platz had legs, Zane had frame, Oliva Sr. had insane insertions and proportions. Wesley haaas...umm... Nevertheless it's another great video, but this is needless to say by now :)

Tomn8er Oh now I do see it better , I still don't think his back has enough thickness or separation but it's definitely not as bad as I saw it. Thanks by the photos as well man , being following you since god knows how long .

To me the only part that he have to grow are is hamstrings and his arms! Beside that he have a good physique for the division. Breon gonna have is hand full this year to keep the title. And I don't want Bumbstead to win Olympia, with the oils in his shoulders!
@realtv101
@realtv101 6 жыл бұрын
So we winning shows off genetics now? I feel the other guys looked way more conditioned, yea maybe it was the tan or oil. As a pro thats all part of presentation, good tan an oil so everything pops. Without it how can the judges, judge you if they cant see the detail? I hate when more well known bodybuilders win off their name, we known this guy is good but didn't showcase it. Guess it really doesn't matter if your going to win anyway.
@Tomn8er

The detail and definition was def more apparent in better quality. I'm sure the judges could see a ton of stuff that isn't coming thru in the video. Actually I KNOW they could considering even the pics show it

Why can't bb's have lighter skin? I see nothing wrong with his tan or skin tone, I find it just ridiculous to demand posers paint themselves brown, it does not contribute to the aesthetics in any positive way in particular, as far as I can see.

Maturity with more time... really?? First and second last Olympia are close to his age. Actually Bumstead is younger... Bellies and inserctions in general, and in your back in particular, do not change drastically once you have this kind of development.
@Tomn8er
@Tomn8er 6 жыл бұрын
Yes and Bumstead also lacks muscle maturity. Visser's bellies/insertions are some of the best around as well... so what's your point?
@jesusconde4317
@jesusconde4317 6 жыл бұрын
Tomn8er muscle maturity I do not think is a real thing. Take for instance Phill Heat the "FRESNESH" in his muscles in his first Mr. Olympias has not been improved. Actually has worsen. The opposite example Big Ramy, it is what it is. period. I mean that's the way his muscles are. You can olny expect minute changes but never anything drastic or dramatic. This category is about optical illusion. I do not thing people realise hoooow dificult is to look like Bumstead with his weight... I have competed in natural under 65k. Same fat %, same high, of course same weight. You cannot imagine the huge difference in appearance. You are gifted or not. That's the game. That's the beauty :) Thanks for your videos 💪👍

Jesus Conde Muscle maturity is what happens as you get older and your skin naturally becomes thinner, thus showing more grainyness and muscular detail. Of course, some guys have it from the beginning, but most young BBers don't. Phil Heath has naturally thin skin so his muscles showed exceptionally well from his first pro show. Wesley IMO needs more overall muscle which will take some time. I didn't realize he's almost 6'4, so the room for improvement is there. Classic is a tall man's game IMO, since it's going to be difficult for shorter BBers to match the lines, structure and proportions of taller BBers.

bigstink9 I have been training for 28 years. Your skin gets thinner due to diet, with age, if something your skin gets loose :( I talk from experience) Reality IMO is that it is supercool to talk about gravity and maturity. There is diet and genetically gifted skin. The rest can be improved till certain degree.

Muscle maturity is absolutely a real thing. As bigstink9 said it's to do with the graininess and detail (vascularity, striations, etc.) of the muscle. Young bodybuilders tend to look smoother and plainer while older guys tend to look grainier and denser. As an example, compare pics of young Dexter Jackson to his current physique. It's night and day and not just because of the size gains. Even Phil as you mention - the texture of his muscles has evolved over time. That's muscle maturity.

Arnold is being pushed as the gold stand for a classic physique?? Arnold was very blocky, short waist, legs not proportion to body. C'mon.. Wesley's back is TERRIBLE. The lower part is soft with NO detail. Rest is very shallow , and no christmas tree whatsoever. He definitely benefited from all the online hype...

As I said to another commenter, his back detail isn't coming through well in this video. His back is far from terrible it actually has a similar look to Yates' (obviously not on that level but structurally-speaking with the wide traps and striated lower back). Look at these pics: contests.npcnewsonline.com/contests/2018/ifbb_wings_of_strength_chicago_pro/comparisons_mcphysique/index_.php
