I’m a 67 year old male/grandpa quilter who just started quilting during the pandemic. Now I’m hooked, love to machine quilt, and love the big spaces to quilt in. You are sooooo good, my goal is to be half as good as you! That would be amazing!

I love your show. Your quilts are amazing! I’d like to throw out a tip and hope it’s ok. Before trimming off the excess from the back of your corner ear, smooth all layers down and be sure the new piece matches the size of the original cut underneath. Then trim if satisfied. I hope that made sense.

Love how you quilted this one. I like lots of negative space as it shows off my quilting. I believe if I spend a lot of time quilting feathers, you should see the feathers. Quilts with lots of piecing or applique sometimes becomes the headliners and the quilting is not seen. i like my quilting to be seen.

Awesome quilting and like the folded corner clipper ruler…although I do use a ruler to do the stitching! No marking necessary. I’m still not Great yet with rulers so it lets me practice ruler work. However that ruler would make nice mitered corners, huh. Beautiful examples of background quilting, that IS your comfort zone haha I think I would do that with smaller motifs and less large background spaces, but I do like your thoughts on extending the seam lines to narrow the space and create secondary repeats or patterns and the thread colors echoing the pattern. This quilt reminds me of a SW blanket, which is wonderful in those bold colors. I found a two-fabric piecing similar to this, it’s created with joined half square triangles (say 7.5”) that are then cut again into three 2.5” bars, stitched together , can be arranged as chevrons or just successively making two fabric contrasting strips of different seam line heights, reminiscent of the SW blanket styles. Smaller blocks for that method, depending on the size of the half squares triangle at the start! Or I’ld add some kachina doll or other appliqués motifs to really make it in the SW style, break up that large background in similar colors with echoing around the motif. Appliqués-raw edge-are Great and easy in FMQ too! Fun theme!

The large amount of negative space is a bit intimidating, but watching you gives me confidence to try it. On another note, do you have a video about basting a quilt? I remember you mentioning that you use iron-on batting. I tried it and am hoping there are some techniques to make it a little less work. But in this video, I noticed that you are using those giant straight pins that long-arm quilters use.
