WF-1000XM4 = INCREDIBLE | Only 2 Problems....

From my hotel room in Miami, I try and explain why I love WF-1000XM4 so much! I say try because I'd just had two days of recovering from my Covid vaccination and some strong pain killers! Hopefully I made some sense!

If I were to summarize this video in one sentence it would be: Although the sound quality isn't technically up there with the best wired audiophile headphones, or even wireless solutions from Bowers & Wilkins/Master & Dynamic - the overall package from Sony (including build quality, convenient earphone/case design, quality of the app, price, battery life, as well as the customizable gesture controls etc) makes this an easy product to recommend to basically anyone!
Only two things stop this from being perfect: the overall fit could be better (at least adding a wing design like we are used to having with Bose earphones would really help!) and adding multipoint bluetooth is a must.
WF-1000XM4 is a 5 Star device and I thoroughly recommend them! My favorite Sony product of the year so far!

I just got my WF M4 buds after about a month's wait for them to come in and all I can say is WOW. I am blown away at how well these little things work. Up until now I've been using my Bose Quiet Comfort 35 over ear which I have been pleased with and were used every day but not any more. I can't believe it but these buds out perform the Bose 35 in every way, well worth the wait and $$$.

i really hope sony will get on board with smartwatches, then sony ecosystem would be complete, imagine having newest xperia phone, newest earbuds, newest smartwatch, new sony bravia 4k tv, ps5 and sony headphones for tv(i like watching movies with headphones)... damn this would be quality ecosystem to be in comparing to others. oh yeah also tablet, wish sony would make those too, hope when my samsung devices will be old in 4 5 years, sony will have all these and i can jump to full ecosystem, im glad they are moving to right direction.

Sony is like the only other non-Samsung Android manufacturer left so they need to make a tablet just so Samsung will have competition from both Apple and Sony... Competition forces companies to make better products and I would love to see some high quality Android tablets wherever it comes from... the same can be said for smartwatches... here's to hoping they can release something crucial in the tablet and/or smartwatch space in the next few years!

I really think i wont miss the multi-device bluetooth link at all. I currently have that enabled on my Airpods Pro and I have been in some awkward situations when the active link changes from my iPhone to my iPad when it shouldn’t… (usually in a place I’m not supposed to make noise). It’s horrible and awkward. It’s better to know that your headphones are connected to that device and to that device only, so it wont switch to normal speakers. There are plenty of apps that, unlike KZbin or Spotify, do not stop broadcasting media if your audio output settings are changed.

Squats bench press flat bench press dumb bell no issues ruining on treadmill nothing some guy said he could hear his feet running on treadmill with these I didn’t had that issue these are gona be my daily use earbuds if I ever wear them out I’ll buy another set or wait for the other models till they come out

If you are keeping them, it might be worth getting custom tips moulded to the shape of your ear. I got Adv-sound moulds for my Fiio FH-7. Sound doesn’t change but the fit and comfort improve significantly. Only thing is the bud will sit a little further out of your ear, but very secure and safe from dropping

There are lots of third party eartips available for all earphones. I notice that audiophiles will usually replace stock silicone tips with Dekoni foam tips. These come with foam tips, but I bet you could find some wing tips if you looked around some. Just try to figure out if the diameter is large enough for it to fit on the earbud.

Some people should get off their heads from history's placebo crap JBL, Bose, Harman or Mark Lev being such wow while by their prices are such overall garbage (only for pmps!). Best sounding in ear earphone is the Sennheiser IE 900. Best sounding true wireless in ear earphone is Devialet Gemini. Trust me, I own almost all earpieces including this XM4.

Really love mine with some caveats: 1) I wish the touch controls were more customizable, 2) sometimes I have to take a bud out of my ear because it isn't immediately recognized. 100% agree on multi-point bluetooth. My Jabra 75t had multi-point, plus the controls customization is much better. Sound is great. Stays in my ears when running. Love the batter life. ANC is good (but not a primary for me). The app crashes on launch about 1 in 5 times. I've had them from launch day.

I confirm after listening to an apple airpod pro. Less dynamic and power, less clarity on high frequencies. The sound is much more round than the airpod pro and less confortable. For everyday use , confort, power, clarity i recommend the air pod pro. I am an audiophile addict and i truly recommend to listen before to buy these earbuds that are not perfect in term of sound at all as the video and every other reviews said... They are not as "wow" as it is being said. If you listen at quite low volume and you like round type of sound... Like clear but not crystal clear and need an excellent ANC (good confort for long time listening but not physically confortable in ear) then go to the sony. Otherwise if you prefer clear sound with good and deep bass too... Good voices, instrument with high power and dynamic.... You should go to apple (better confort but the crystal clear sound at high volume is fatiguing)

Love your videos. I fell in love with many things Japanese when I got dumped into a Japanese class in middle school. It was thrown together as an overflow class, but ended up being one of the most memorable classes of my childhood. I want to be a sony fan, but am sadly falling into the category of disillusioned. I planned on the sony erricson xperia x10 being my first smartphone, but the delayed release, outdated software, and lack of multi-touch support pushed me to the samsung captivate. Now just over 10 years later, I have money in hand for a 1m3, and release delays and the price increase are pushing me away. I'm holding out to July 1 to see if they bundle in the xm4's, which may make the $100 price increase for the phone more palatable. If not, I sadly won't be a sony owner, again. Either way, can't wait for your 1m3 review.

Thanks so much for your comment. I completely understand your point of view and for what it's worth I share it. I find it enormously frustrating these delays. For lots of reasons. And they keep on happening! If you're able to wait I have a feeling you'll be happy you did, but I completely respect anyone who is unable or unwilling to wait. I most certainly wouldn't blame them for moving on. Regarding the Japanese stuff, that's going to be the most fun part of this project. I've been invited by some Sony employees to Tokyo and I cannot wait to do videos from there. The trip has been postponed twice due to covid but I'm hoping I can go at the end of this year. These replaced my pixel buds on my pixel 5. The ANC is impressive, the sound is great. I was very surprised how comfortable they are, I didn't expect them to be as compared to the pixel buds which for my ear where a perfect fit but these are close to the same and I don't get ear fatigue or pain which is a huge plus. The app works well also, even on the android 12 betas, so far no issues. I agree on the 5 start review, I really love these very much. I agree with the minus of the multi BT support, that would make them perfect.

Have to agree with you Tom, these are 9/10 for me, so good..... My only issue is the fit, which as you say, doesn't feel as "locked in" as some buds with "tips" or "wings" which would be appreciated for running and listening when lying down.... I'm very happy though 😊

Yes - I really do think with a slick Bose-style wing and multipoint Bluetooth, these would be perfect. I was due to use these in the gym but the vaccine wiped me out for a couple of days. I have purchased these and they sound amazing but I’m just not feeling confident in the fit, they don’t feel like they are gonna come out but they feel like the are just hanging on in my ears and don’t have eve ultimate seal. I tried them a bit but the fit is better on Galaxy Buds Pro, and multipoint + volume adjustment is avilable on the Huawei Freebuds Pro so I wish some day all those smartphone companies collaborate and make the best earbuds in the world.

I just returned them because the volume of these left a lot to be desired. I hated turning them on and wanting to put the volume up, and they were already on MAX. Plus, sound quality changed between low volume and max volume.

If you are missing multipoint on iOS, creating shortcuts on my iPhone and iPad with a single tap I am able to pair to either device.

Open Shortcuts, create new, Set playback destination to WF-1000XM4. Note make sure the earbuds are already paired with the device before creating the shortcut. Also I named the shortcut on my iPhone XM4 iPhone and on my iPad XM4 iPad (not sure if same would work on both). It creates a shortcut which I then dragged to my 1st primary app screen.

You're absolutely right. The two days before filming I was awake non-stop and felt terrible because I'd just taken the covid vaccine. I had a bad reaction. I struggled to make this video to be honest and even made more mistakes than usual! I actually was worried I'd get some negative comments, but luckily I seem to have gotten away with it. The next one (Xperia 10 III) was filmed the same day, so I hope I get away with that one too!

When it comes to Sound, Sony is no joke. Sony from its origin, Sonus, means Sound. All of the sound-related systems I own are from Sony. I had my Sony bluetooth headphones for years now. I use it every single day to listen to podcast, news and music, morning and evening. It has excellent noise cancelling and sound quality. One of the features I like the most is that I only have to charge it once every month. Battery performance and stability are really great. When Sony says their battery lasts 15 days, it means it will last 20 days in reality. Also my Xperia phone, I charge it once every two days (just to be clear, I have more than 150 apps installed in the phone and I use the phone all the time during the day). Sony is good at making products, but terrible at PR them.

i have the original WF1000x ... they have noticable noise floor. Tell me pls - If you are in a quiet room listening to a quiet calm music (or just turning them on) Can you hear any white noise?

I’ve only used them briefly. With ANC on yes there is a tiny bit of white noise. But the room has to be silent for you to notice. In fairness as these are in ear I think you notice more anyway.

Tom, I need your help in answering this question: Do you think Sony will offer a bundle with the Xperia 1 III and WF1000-XM4?

I would love them to, but I have a feeling they'll bundle the XM3 instead.... I hope I'm wrong though! The 1 III with WF-1000XM4 would be heaven. Perfect combination

I tried these for a week and sent them back due to annoying hissing on noise cancellation and not a good fit in my rather small ears. The sound is outstanding compared to my AirPod pros….I heard music in a new way like the first time I heard a Sony Walkman as a kid. Well done Sony, however they don’t fit my ears. I am going to try the Bowers and Wilkens and hope that they fit better than Sony. Overall, Sony is a good deal if they fit your ears.

I got these for Xmas as my summer sounds and they are brilliant for size sound and quality and features .. only gripe is they are nit a perfect fit confidence .. they are the earbud version of my qc35 ii which I hate wearing on hot days .. these step up for me

I totally feel you about bose fit. It's just perfect I can listen 24/7 and not feel ear fatigue or feel like it's there. Even apple AirPods pro is locked in and feels good. Those style buds tho, I tried the Samsung one and I always felt that it might fall off when walk or something so I returned them. Do you think you can wear those for a long time and not get fatigued?

Yes I could have these in all day I reckon. Just had them in on a flight from Miami to London and the noise cancelling works so well that I don't feel like I need to have the WH over-ear design anymore! Have these in practically the entire flight, never uncomfortable - amazing really! Of they had a similar wing type extension, like the Bose I'd feel better about their ability to stay in my ears, even during exercise

I returned mine. AirPods Pro are a good fit for me but it starts to hurt a little maybe after 3-4 hours of wear but these sonys I couldn't wear for more than 30mins even with the smallest tips. it also doesn't sit on the ear nicely either so depending on your ear shape it might look ridiculous looking from front it flares out. I also feel it looks bigger in person than I have seen in videos idk maybe because I got the grey one. but the sound quality.. oh boy it sounds amazing! but if I can't wear it for more than 30 mins no point so sadly had to return mine

I recomend you to change the ear tips. I had the same issue, then I switch the ear tips for a Comply ones and the ear pain's gone!

The lack of Multipoint isn't actually that big a deal as it means losing LDAC (at least, that's the case with the WH-1000XM4) and for those of us who bought these for the sound quality, it's a reasonable trade-off. I suspect Sony might add it later?

Hi Tom, congrats on your new purchase. Thanks for this first impressions video. That would be nice if you are moving back to UK and wish you a nice trip back, they certainly have the battery life for the flight :) I am curious about battery life on them with anc off, because on my XM3 i go from 7 hours to around 2hours only when i activate both EQ and DSEE at the same timewith AAC codec. (I dont care about ldac too many trade off for me, even if it would be a nice thing to have)

Cheers Joe - thanks for your comment. It feels good to be back in the UK again. It's been a long time! That flight from Miami was so much better with these new earphones. They did an admirable job cutting out all the noise on the flight. I need to spend some more time monitoring battery depletion times in the various modes/settings etc. All I know so far, is the battery life is genuinely impressive, considering I am one who likes to crank up the volume and always have ANC on... I'll do a follow up on these soon with more info

im new with these, love them. How can i correctly improve battery life??? do i have to put them in the charging case right after every use?? or only after having used them for about 4-5 hours, meaning that they should be around 40% in battery charge for example. thanks in advance

WXm3 wireless just fell out of my ears so they were returned. I can see the improvement in shape. Here is one big negative and inly one brand has addressed this. When you want to watch a movie on a plane with wireless headphones it is impossible. I think Bower Wilkins has addressed this

why on earth would they remove the multi-point connection? That's my top favorite feature on the WH-1000XM4! I was %100 ready to get the WF-1000XM4 too and lack of multi-point connection is such a deal breaker.

Nice video as usual :) I have seen some other reviews on those Sony XM4 and understand that they should be good at letting talk passing through the filter and that reminds me of the Peltor headsets and some other ear protecting devices that is very good at clipping high and dangerous sounds volumes. Those Sony devices might not be made for ear protection but it would have been very neat if they are able to filter out peaks sounds like those you find in a factory or on a shooting range. With some model of Peltor you can almost hear talk better with those on that without, like they improve or amplifies those frequencies.

For some reason I really want I want these. But for me wired is still King. On my priority list sound quality is like the first five things on the list. Wireless just can't compete. Really your only trading the convenience of getting rid of The Wire. For a bunch of other inconveniences. Like worrying about battery life for example.

Definitely looking at upgrading from the XM3s. Also wish the 1 III would release sooner in the states/have the same worldwide release date. I’ve always been an iPhone user but if I was to ever get an android phone it would be a Sony.

Once I have found the new studio and finalised the plan I'll share it. At the moment im not sure which country the studio should be in. I have a lot to work out over the next week or two!

Yes it is. Dollar for dollar, wired will win - bit for overall convenience, this wireless approach with high resolution audio is a winner. When you factor in the quality of the app and the noise cancellation, this is a major win and extremely good buy. Five star product for sure. Cheers, Tom 🙏

Is there a trade off between battery life and multi-point bluetooth? Otherwise, why omit that capability? My current W1000x Sony's are very nice but switching from laptop to phone is slow and unreliable (to the point where I have 2 sets to avoid the hassle). The WF1000XMF4 is very attractive provided it switches more easily between devices as part of the new bluetooth standard.

I didn't like the tips on the xm4's so I switched them out for the silicone tips that came with my xm3's and it made them perfect.

The multipoint pairing kills battery like hell and also disables LDAC, that's why I turned it off instantly on my large XM4 even it has multipoint pairing.

Will you review the new Sony c500 buds too? I want to buy new buds but i don't need ANC or great call quality. All i want is great sound to listen to music. So if i could save 180 euro's by buying the c500 buds instead of the xm4's that would be great for me. I just can't figure out what the difference is in sound quality between 100 Euro buds and 280 Euro buds.
