Is it that hard to imagine why you shouldn't touch a wild animal? They aren't used to touch, it's very likely to cause them stress, and like all aquatic animals their skin is delicately balanced to protect them from their environment. Just admire them from afar, there's no need to get so close. Humans are always needing to get super close to wild animals and it's pretty much never a good idea.

@@arenshichic1203no, you should never touch them, and also not follow them if they dive down away from you. I swam with them too in the Philippines and honestly, people disregarded the 'only six people to one animal' and 'no touching' rules so casually and they weren't called on it at all by the guides. Left a bad taste in my mouth, I wouldn't do it again for that reason bc it really felt like the sharks were harassed. They all dove away in the end. I'm not saying don't do it but definitely do your research about the company you're going with and how seriously they take the animals' welfare, and set the standard for good behaviour yourself. That's the only way that people can keep having this lovely experience because if they feel unsafe the animals will eventually stop coming to that spot.

When I was stationed in Hawaii in the early 2000's, one day when I was snorkeling at Wiamaea Bay, a green sea turtle decided I was a curiosity and began shadowing me for 30 or so minutes. I knew the laws protecting the turtle from any human making contact with it in any way. So obviously, I avoided that. But it was awesome to have an animal be interested in me and comfortable enough to follow me around. That was certainly one of my most memorable times snorkeling at that spot.

Peter Benchley, the author of "Jaws," was nearly killed swimming with a whale shark. He said that he only had himself to blame. He swam close enough to touch the shark when its swishing tail brought a pectoral fin into Benchley's face and he collided, knocking his regulator loose, then getting caught underneath the shark in the slipstream. He almost drowned. He said that the shark's side was as hard as iron and it just didn't really notice or care about him as it was going on its day. Benchley managed to get his regulator back, purge his regulator and mask, get his air going again and then got back to the surface. He was struck by the irony that he could have been killed by the most non-aggressive shark species possible. Just because its non-aggressive, it doesn't mean that they can be taken for granted or that a diver can ever be careless in the ocean.

Honestly the vast majority of sharks don't attack humans and even the more dangerous sharks usualy do so either as exploratory bites (their equivalent of wanting to touch a weird thing you found out of curiosity), mistaking a surfer as a seal(great white sharks are these two) or because you invaded their personal space (hammerheads). The two sharks that are actually aggressive are Bull sharks (they can swim up rivers:) and Tiger Sharks (they're like goats, they eat anything). But as far as I know Tiger sharks spend the day further out at sea and only get closer to the land at night. Most sharks won't attack unless you act like either prey (by flailing around and shit) or a threat. Almost no shark will see you and think "food". Almost all of them will think "wtf kind of fucked up alien is that?"

I was on a boat and this ass hole of a boat decided to cause a wake wave in front of us. The skipper tried to slow down and maneuver but we still hit it. I got thrown overboard Stunned I came to and realized I was face to face with a whale shark - it booped me then swam to push me to the surface. I had sunk 5-8 feet - I was mere moments from drowning

It sickens me that humans are always in the equation as the reason why many animals are endangered.

“And unlike other sharks which attack” other fish not humans. All sharks are generally harmless and curious creatures. Since they cant see clearly and only have fins they use their mouths because their snoot has receptors which is how they hunt or interact with other things in the ocean.

Thank you for reminding folk to not touch them. I was lucky enough to swim for an hour with a pod in Mexico, some moron tourists were clinging onto the fins of the animals as if they were a fairground ride.
