What a big beautiful room and it looks so sturdy now. I am amazed at the amount of work it took to get you here. Thank you Jim, you are one knowledgeable man and the two of you work well together. I think the great room is going to be perfect, better than cutting it up into smaller areas. BRAVO to you both.

Okay Katie, consider renting an industrial planer, running all the old barn wood from the falling down barn through it, sealing the boards with Minwax color wash, and putting it on the ceiling! Could be so cool!

Holy cow! Can’t imagine figuring out all those angles to cut! Seriously had mego (my eyes glazed over) moment when Jim was explaining the rise, and calculations to get to 16degree pitch. He’s the measuring wizard! So glad you are finally really making headway on the house. It will be so nice to get moved in. Keep moving! Well done Jim and Nate!! 🎉🎉🎉🎉

Wow! Great work! Those beams look great. Nate, maybe before you think about cabins, what about just a campsite for extra income. Then later RV parking and then a cabin down the line? Just having a campsite for rent could possibly get your lovely wife closer to quitting her job and to help you more. You both make a great team.

remember sitting in math (trigonometry, geometry) classes and thinking "I will never use this stuff again!" in many endeavors in life we need math. prime example: building rafters.

Thanks Jim for helping Nate out! You guys did an awesome job! I’m not an engineer. My brain can’t seem to pick up why such a big beam was needed. 😮😅😂 So thanks in advance for the future explanation. I understand the original rafters are warped and wavy and don’t have enough space for insulation. So this corrects those issues. I’m assuming the new beam is basically holding up the old beam and roof since you removed interior walls where the beam was resting. Is that right?

Can someone explain the point of a roof within a roof?
@ellenrees1103
@ellenrees1103 Ай бұрын
I think there are two reasons: one is to create an even framework for attaching the new ceiling to (drywall or whatever surface they choose) because the original rafters are very uneven, and the other is to create a deeper cavity for installing insulation. The original rafters don't look deep enough to get much R value in, now that they have a vaulted ceiling.
