Brian Ortiz and Amy Anderson and their son Henry live in Dallas, TX and make a combined $168,000 a year. In a typical week, the couple spends about $350. During the week of May 24-30, 2021, Amy and Brian tracked their spending to see how where their money went, vacation included. It was also a pay week and a mortgage payment week.

Seems a bit silly to go over their expenses on a week where they happen to be on vacation.

Totally pointless to review their expenses for one uncommon week. Averaging a whole year out (or month, at least) would be more of a financial topic. This just tells me nothing.
@gabrielgonzalez6456
@gabrielgonzalez6456 2 жыл бұрын
Actually if you ignore that week expenses and see the investments which basically equals the investment tells you that they obviously live way below their means. They also mentioned they have no debt but the mortgage. Paid off student loans and cars. $3000 towards investments is very atypical. Maybe that’s their strategy, “if we spend 3000 on vacation, 3000 goes towards investments

How is it non typical?? The make 168k a year or $461 per day or $370 after taxes or so. How many times did they pass $370, obviously they didn’t account for mortgage payment but that’s all the debt they have. They actually saved basically every day

Some families budget on the same cycle they buy food at the supermarket (bi-weekly or weekly). It’s easier to track weekly expenses because you’re not far removed from what you just spent based on your budget. Over a month, “things” tend to pop up often and can get carried away.
@styloverte1163

And then they saved $3k that week. If they were doing that every week, they'd save $156k per year, but their income is only $168k. Unrealistic week.
@jbbushon

@@styloverte1163 exactly, its the end of the month, so they act like their weekly costs include the mortgage and all investments. This was basically monthly costs, but only one week of food/living costs.

When I bought my first condo I paid off my mortgage as quickly as possible because I didn't want to have any "debt". But what I later learned in business school is to see "debt" as "leverage". If their mortgage rate isn't that high, then they should be pay it off as slowly as possible and investing the money elsewhere. A mortgage is like a life hack -- it's by far the cheapest leverage you can get.

What you are saying works for people who understands or know what they are investing in. Many people get 30years mortgage with the intention of either paying extra every months or investing, however most people are not discipline enough to pay on extra mortgage or invest - Life happens. A paid off mortgage gives you the peace of mind at least for someone who doesn't invest.

peace of mind i can respect but silly to pay off the mortgage early. invest the extra in the market right now. i know others will say "but its a guarantted 3-4% return to pay it off"..ya ok. you're losing out right now in a huge bull market with ridiculous doujble digit returns. these guys are clearly gonna be fine if their house was only 300k and they already make 170k together. especially if they dont have another kid, they are set for life. living very within their means already and average simple life

It's super confusing and misleading. I doubt they are investing $1k something into their 401k every week because that would very quickly exceed the threshold. The video definitely misstated this amount when, in reality, it's probably $1k every month.

I think it’s bc it’s a vacation week plus some of their monthly expenses like mortgage. So technically they spent $6k this week but that is not their weekly expenses
