8:32 You explained the chalk outlines yourself, Aileen. When you talked about your own experience taking medication and you not feeling yourself, looking from the outside, feeling like a zombie of some sort... you walked inside your own floating chalk outline. You felt absent, almost dead, not in touch with the world. Truly touching reaction, thank you for your emotions. You're an angel.

Oh, and I can't speak to anyone else's interpretation, but for me the "floating chalk outlines" refer to the feeling of deading ones emotions and concealing how one feels all in order to function in the daily life happening around oneself..
@loddfafnir6111 Жыл бұрын
For me the chalk outline reference means living as a zombie, a living dead when on antidepressants since they take away most feelings and energy one has. "Still here in this bed that I crawled in." "Take this one, wash it down and you'll be fine. The feeling goes and you draw a chalk outline." That's how I understand it anyway, don't know if that's how Ren meant it. And as always, thanks for the reaction.

You said exactly what chalk outlines were. You stated the lines marked a body of the dead. You had said when you took the pills you felt as if you were floating above your own body as if you were a guardian angel looking down on your body going through life. You raised yourself in these floating chalk outline.

It's so very healing. I think many of us has felt that way & he gave us words for it. So many times I have felt like that. The frustration of just being so confused with everything. You're sick & they give you meds. Then they quit giving you meds but the problem hasn't been solved so you end up turning towards the wrong kind of meds. cause that's all you can get & you think the street meds are helping but they're not. Then they tell you your wrong for taking meds. Nothing helps & you just get caught in a viscous cycle. Some don't come out of it. My son didn't. I found out REN has Lyme disease & was misdiagnosed for years. Looking through everything I remembered when my son was around 5 we had to take him to the ER to have a tic dug out of him. He got really sick & was sick & suffering for so long & we not once thought he could have had Lyme disease. It has helped me though because I know he's not suffering anymore. He'd been in & out of jail but had started to turn his life around when a neighbor called the police on him & they took him in on a warrant that was 61/2 yrs. old. Off paper at 7. In his cell within 61/2 hrs. in June. He would have loved REN & I feel a closeness to him through REN. I feel like I taught my children well & now I don't have either one of them. If it wasn't for The Good Lord I would have joined them but He has me here for something & I know I'll be with them again. They suffer no more. I think you're a beautiful young lady. I love people's reactions & I think REN does watch people's reactions. I find it so freeing to know that I'm not alone in those feelings. So many of us suffer them & can relate. Music is so healing.

I've seen this 20 times...? 50 times? I don't know but it still chokes me up. And although I don't have experience with it, I think you summed up exactly what the song is referring to when they talk about "Chalk Outlines". One of the main points is walking around in a chalk outline - not being present - not really living, just a walking dead shadow of yourself because of the medication they put people on. My wife deals with depression and she has told me about medications that they had put her on that made her empty, running red lights without a care about the consequences or what could happen. "Walking around in a floating chalk outline..."

The chalk outline analogy is exactly that out of body experience you talked about when being medicated. You feel like you are already dead. A walking corpse, hence the floating chalk outline around you. Like a reverse halo. Or that is how I perceive it.

What a powerful reaction, Aileen! I'm so glad you got to this song. It's one of my all-time favourites. As a few others have said, the 'Chalk Outlines' is generally taken to mean that exact feeling you described of not feeling like yourself when you were on medication. "Walk around in a floating chalk outline"... the meds stop you feeling almost anything, you're just a shell, an outline of yourself, walking around like a zombie. There's also a hint of self-medicating with other things.. "push it back down with an new habit", but that can also mean just trying a second med to counteract the side effects of the first one, then a third and so on and so on, chasing something - anything - to make you feel ok. And yet being scared of feeling ok, because you know it doesn't last and you'll just get hurt again if you allow yourself to be happy for a moment. Or at least, that's my take on it. I loved when you pointed upwards and waved your finger in the air a few times when Chinchilla hit the high notes during the bridge! I do exactly the same every time - it's exhilarating listening to her voice dance around up there. I'd highly recommend their other duet "How to be me" (the live version). They take the harmonies and emotion up to a whole new level in that. It's honestly breathtakingly good. But again, it's desperately sad, so have the tissues handy. I'd also encourage you to have a peek into the Chinchilla rabbit hole - Fingers (Live for Hunger TV) is an astonishing live performance. Seriously, Chinchilla is a powerhouse and deserves all the love she has been getting lately.

❤❤ I loved your reaction. So heart-felt. You explained chaulk outlines without realizing. When you recalled feeling of being out of body thats it. Taking the medication and making you feel not like yourself. The real you is like the walking dead. Or a floating chaulk outline going through the motions but it's not you it what the medication made you feel - most times nothing, dead. And by taking the medication you draw your chaulk outline. And what the medication does to you erases you in the chaulk outline. So you had it. Keep up the amazing work.

This one hit me so hard the first time I heard it - and still does to this day. The Chalk Outlines refer to feeling like you are just a hollow shell, dead inside - a walking or floating Chalk Outline while on the Meds. Such an incredible track on so many levels. As others have mentioned "How to be me [Live]" is another wonderful Ren X Chinchilla collaboration, and is full of such powerful emotion... I have to make sure I have a box of tissues with me whenever I watch the video - and I'm a 58 year old bloke who can usually hold it together during an emotional song. Not so with Ren - his artistry hits different.

I'm not sure if they have expounded on the chalk outline thing however I read is as you live in the "floating" chalk outline. As in: it's drawn around you from the moment you're effectively made numb from the pills. They turn you from a human into just a husk that knows how to walk. Well worth Exploring Chinchilla too, she is phenomenal. My personal favourite of the biggies that get a lot of reacts is Elements, that's got a bass sound to die for and some gorgeous vocal layers, all done by her. They're all good though, I love the video for Fingers, the song has moments of quite intense brutality and the pulsing music in the studio version just adds so much depth, and menace, to the horrific descriptions. The live version is good but it's just sung over piano so you lose the music but gain Chinchilla's goosebump raising performance. She is incredible.

I really do not think Ren has made a bad song and somehow every live version seems to be even better than the recorded versions. But I think this has to be my favourite so far and can not get enough of it. So glad the You tube algorithm pushed Hi Ren to me on Xmas day last year. It spoke to me deeply and hit like a sledgehammer. I was lucky enough to hear him before the reaction boom hit for him and I do not think there have been many independent artists, if any, that has both been pushed soo well by and for the reaction community. And he is humble enough to realise and appreciate that fact. There have been very few days since hearing Hi Ren that I have not listened to one of his songs. A once in a generation talent IMO.

To me when they say "chalk outlines" it's that feeling you were describing when you're on the medication, we don't feel like yourself you don't quite feel alive, colors and flavors are muted, you don't have any real drive or passion. Basically it makes them feel like they're half in the grave already.

Oh, Sweetheart ... I just want to hug you (but not in a weird, intrusive way, just for comfort.) Their hearts are on display and the way they look into each other's eyes just pierces me. It's like they found a kindred spirit within each other. Please do, "How To Be Me," (Live) with Ren & Chinchilla. The song is haunting and is for Ren's friend Joe Hughes, who ended his own life. My interpretation is that the song lyrics are from Joe's perspective and perhaps what was going on in his head before he made his final decision. Go to Ren's community tab page and read about his friend. Absorb Ren's perspective of reaching the place where Joe jumpes from the bridge just literally 2-3 minutes too late. I don't know if yoi need a trigger warning on it if you don't know the backstory, but my God ... the emotions this man has gone through and continues to go through. So thankful he works his way through it in music, first, for him, but secondly he chooses to share it to perhaps help others. If you want more electric guitar, as well as his singing voice, look for The Big Push singing their mashup of, "I Shot The Sheriff/Road To Zion/Hip Hop." Look for the version where Ren is wearing red suspenders - nothing but fun and energy feom a live audience that gathered while they were busking. A true palette cleanser from the deep, emotional music. :)
