John Hughes wrote this for John Candy (Del).... as well as the follow up film, Uncle Buck which came out 2 years later, and a cameo in Home Alone. They were great friends. Candy was a comedy genius... and a master of Improv. Hes one of those guys that instantly improves any movie hes in.. and apparently he was a genuinely nice, big hearted dude. He even had his own cartoon show at one point called Camp Candy.

Also, Edie McClurg (the car rental lady) suggested the phone call bit and John Hughes suggested that it be a personal call. There was no script written for the call. She ad-libbed the Thanksgiving dinner conversation.

This like Ferris Bueller's Day Off is one of the few movies from the 80s that has a post credit scene. After the credits it cuts back to Neil's boss still sitting looking at 2 ads with no words and his Thanksgiving turkey is on his desk. The house isn't the Home Alone house but is in the same neighbourhood as John Hughes had a very specific type of perfect family home design in mind especially those dealing with the holidays and time with family.

Trivia... 3 actors from another John Hughes movie (Ferris Bueller's Day Off) are in this film. Steve Martin's co-worker (Lyman Ward) who says "You'll never make the 6:00!" as he gets on the elevator played Ferris' Dad . The man at the airport (Ben Stein) who announces that flight 909 is cancelled played Ferris' economics teacher. And the lady at the car rental desk (Edie McClurg) was the school secretary.

Aria, you need to see the John Candy centric film, "Uncle Buck." It's also a John Hughes produced story. It also stars an even younger and cuter Macauley Culkin ("Home Alone").

The Kevin Bacon game thing is so weird. My Cousin is in literally one (no budget) movie that is listed on IMDB and links with Kevin Bacon in 4 names. Edit : I just checked and he's now listed in 5 or 6 movies but its still that very first movie that was listed on IMDB that qualifies him in the Kevin Bacon game

Steve Martin was at one time about the biggest standup comedian around. He was crazy and zany when he wanted to be but is extremely intelligent and very witty. He had a string of great comedies when he was younger. My favourites are All Of Me, The Man With Two Brains and L.A. Story. John Candy is rarely a main character, but he did star in Uncle Buck. He was the security guard at the end of National Lampoons Vacation, he was in Stripes, Spaceballs, The Blues Brothers, and more, but died in 94 at around 44 years of age.

Yeah, when I was a kid in the 70s he was on original (& best!) Saturday Night Live as a recurring guest. Then I remember his #1 hit song "King Tut" blew up & he became the 1st "Rock Star Comedian" to fill stadiums. He even had The Grateful Dead open for him at one point. I was too young, but I always heard a story that when he came to Nashville back then prior to his hit song he played a small club & as part of his act he took whole audience up the street to Krispey Kreme donut shop. They all walked up street & got donuts. I think that story is actually in his bio? Don't know if it's my all time fave, but Ron Howard directed "Parenthood" is fantastic! You don't have to be a parent either. It was also Keanu Reeves 2nd role & Juaquin Phoenix's 1st. ✌️🌎❤️

@@satyadasgumbyji8956 Yeah, I read his autobiography Born Standing Up. He was an old-school entertainer, learned magic at a store at the nearby Knotsberry Farm, did vaudeville type acts, and as you probably know is a super hot banjo player. Those things where he’d take the audience out into the street started as spontaneous whims. He decided at one point to tell jokes with no punchline, and just leave people hanging. The audience, expecting a payoff but getting none, realised what he was doing and found it hilarious, but it was a bold move. He pushed a lot of boundaries in those early days, but it was when he’s the straight man like in All Of Me or L.A. Story or Planes Trains And Automobiles that I think he’s funniest.

"You shared a motel room with a complete stranger? Are you crazy?" "Not yet. But I'm getting there." Happy Thanksgiving! 😎 🦃 Fun Fact: Film debut of Dylan Baker and Susan Isaacs. Turkey Dinner Fact: After the credits, Neal's (Steve Martin) boss is still at his desk analyzing the ads, his Thanksgiving dinner sitting on his desk. New House Fact: Neal's (Steve Martin) house was also a set built from scratch, consisting of seven rooms, and taking five months to complete. It ended up costing $100,000, which angered Paramount executives, and caused turmoil on the set. Crazy Rant Fact: The Marathon Car Rental scene is exactly one minute long from the time Steve Martin starts his tirade to the time the attendant ends the scene. In that sixty seconds, the "F" word is used nineteen times. The film would've easily been rated PG or PG-13 by the MPAA, if it weren't for this one scene.

7 rooms? Didn't they only film in the kitchen and the foyer? That kinda angers me too.
@bigdream_dreambig
@bigdream_dreambig 8 ай бұрын
@bossfan49 Yeah, without more information, I don't believe it. The only way anyone would build such a set rather than just use an existing home (of which I understand Chicago has several) is if they were planning to do a heck of a lot more filming throughout that location -- but there's no way that happened here. There would have to be enough deleted scenes to make a complete second movie in that case!

More trivia... Edie McClurg (lady at the car rental desk) and Bill Erwin (sleeping old man on plane) both appeared in the same episode of Seinfeld ("The Old Man"). There was a sub-plot that was cut from the movie involving Neil's wife suspecting he was cheating on her and was lying about delays as a cover-up. If you do a rewatch, that throws a whole new light on some of the scenes (such as why she was so happy to meet Del and find out he was a real person).

Such a beautiful reactor- always fun to watch. I'm surprised you don't know who Steve Martin is. He started out as a stand-up comedian in the 70s, making several appearances on the original SNL. His breakout movie role was in The Jerk (1979), and has been in dozens of movies since. In recent years, he's also made a name for himself as a banjo player, touring with the bluegrass band, Steep Canyon Rangers. Some of my favorite Steve Martin films are The Jerk, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (1988), and L.A. Story (1991).

Your speculation about the house at the end maybe being the same one as was lived in by the Home Alone family made me curious, so I did a (very) little internet research. According to one source, the houses aren't the same, but they're both in the same neighborhood. John Hughes wrote and was a producer for both films (and directed this one), so maybe both films also used the same location scout, or maybe Hughes recommended the spot to the later film's production team.

Rip to the great one of a kind, john candy. John Hughes, could write movie scripts so fast! Anything john was in was great. Blues Brothers stripes Brewster's millions home alone uncle buck Splash, and on and on. Mostly he had small parts but watch any movie ge starred or costarref in. Next should be uncle buck, then stripes. Pro tips...steve martins partner in this is ferris buellers dad! Kevin bacon was in another movie based on this character, He said Dhe said! The plane announcer guy is ferris buellers teacher! The car rental lady is ferris buellers principals assistant! She was a personal friend of Hughes and duggedted a clerk do a phine call scene in front of steve. So Hughes gave her the part and it was comoletely unscripted...she addlibbed the whole thing! The cartoon family guy, does the gteatest parody of their motel room arguement scene! The song in the car is by ray Charles, the song he or the kid is jamming to in uncle buck, is also ray Charles!

If want to see more of him I'd recommend "Uncle Buck," "Delirious," "The Great Outdoors," "Spaceballs (a "Star Wars" parody)," "Cool Runnings" (based on the story of the Jamaican Bobsled Team that competed in the 1988 Olympics), and a very underrated film of his "Only the Lonely." a drama which was a change of pace, with his co-star being screen legend Maureen O'Hara in one of her last roles. He's also made appearances in "Home Alone," "The Blues Bros," "National Lampoon's Vacation," Oliver Stone's "JFK," and many others. If you can, see if you can find "episodes of "Second City Television" a Canadian TV series that also starred Eugene Levy, Andrea Martin, Joe Flaherty, Catherine O'Hara, Dave Thomas, Rick Moranis, and Martin Short, Candy also at his best.
