I'm a Brit who's worked for myself all my adult life but when I was 14/15 I had a 'real' job and ran a video rental shop for a guy where I ended up with an early timecoded promo copy of 'Planes ,Trains and Automobiles' that ended up as one of my fave objects I owned because it brought so many hours of pure uncut laughter for so many ppl in my life ! To this day the memory of laid watching it for the first time by myself on a school night at 15 with John Candy's relentless totally sincere overly optirmistic delivery of " Gee , I've never seen a guy get picked up by the testicles before " To this day was probably the hardest I have ever laughed alone without been on acid or fungi ! Martin and Candy both started in comedy as writers and sketch comedy, comedy films... but they both became versatile actors as you see in the dramatic moments in this film. Check out more of John in The Great Outdoors with Dan Ackroyd and definitely Uncle Buck. You might remember you saw him at the end of Home Alone too! Candy is also great in detective comedy Who's Harry Crumb, and a small but memorable dramatic role in JFK.

We were on the interstate and I woke up the guy front seat passenger who was sleeping. This guy panicked and grabbed the wheel. Lucky we made it to the side of the road. This must have happened to others how else did they get the idea for the movie! Well I'm a train Engineer and I can say passenger trains do NOT break down like that, but its a movie right.

One of my favorite DVDs. It's the best Thanksgiving movie ever. John Hughes uses a lot of the same actors and did many films with John Candy. My favorite scene is when they are caught between the two semitrucks. Steve turns to John and he is dressed as the devil. John Hughes recycles the gag in, "Home Alone." While Kevin's mom is at the airport. She exclaims, "I'll sell my soul to the devil to get home." It's at that moment is the cue for John Candy to enter the scene. The kid that breaks into the room and robs them. It was part of a scene that ended up on the cutting room floor. He was the pizza delivery guy. Then decides to come back and rob them. ✌️❤️🌹

@@BDUBZ49Yes, home grown. All their animals except the sheep and the cows 2:03 , were like pets in that they were often invited inside the house. I remember the best country ham biscuit I ever ate. Bob had a pig he called Petunia. As she was growing she spent most of her time in the house. Bob would look at her and ask, "Do you love Daddy?" Petunia would make her pig grunts and nod her head vigorously. When she reached top hog, as Bob would say, Petunia was turned into country ham, sausage, ribs, and pork tenderloin. As I bit into the biscuit, it suddenly dawn on me who I was eating. I shrieked out, "How could you!?" Bob answered back, "Unlike other pigs, Petunia was raised with love. I thought about what he said then finished my ham biscuit.

And of course the old animated movie, Karl-Bertil Jonssons Julafton! They always show it on Christmas Eve here in Sweden. He is fourteen years old, and his hero is Robin Hood. Take from the rich, and give to the poor. And he works extra at the post office over the holidays, handling all those packages with Christmas gifts. And back in the day, people wrote out their titles. Like Doctor. To show how rich they were.

Great reaction Addie like always, I love this movie i haven't seen it in a long time, John Hughes at the peak of his powers, with two masterful comedians at theirs Martin and Candy. There are some fun-facts about it, this movie is inspired by John Hughes’s own hellish trip from New York City to Chicago. Before he became a filmmaker, Hughes worked as a copywriter for the Leo Burnett advertising agency in Chicago. One day he had an 11 a.m. presentation scheduled in New York City on a Wednesday, and planned to return home on a 5 p.m. flight that same evening. Winter winds forced all flights to Chicago to be canceled that night, so he stayed in a hotel. A snowstorm in Chicago the next day continued the delays. The plane he eventually boarded ended up being diverted to Denver. Then Phoenix. Hughes didn’t make it back until Monday. John Candy arrived with lots of exercise equipment in tow. On the first day of shooting, the crew brought in treadmills, weights, and other exercise equipment for Candy to use in his hotel suite. Martin said Candy “never went near any of it once.” McClurg who is probably best known as Grace, Principal Rooney’s secretary in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, played the St. Louis car rental employee upon whom Neal dropped 18 F-bombs. For the first few takes, McClurg simply raised her finger and had a standard phone conversation with a customer. Then Hughes told her to improvise talking on the phone about Thanksgiving. In the scene that goes back and forth between Neal trying to sleep next to Del clearing his sinuses and Neal’s watching TV alone in their bed, she is somehow watching She’s Having a Baby, which wouldn’t be released in theaters until February of the following year. Kevin Bacon stars in that movie, and made a cameo in this film as the guy who out-hustles Neal in getting a cab. Some people believe Bacon who was officially listed in the credits as “Taxi Racer” was playing his She’s Having a Baby character, Jake, in that scene. Another cameo was the future Star Trek: Voyager star Jeri Ryan that made her acting debut in this movie. She was one of the passengers on the bus ride and couldn’t help but laugh at Martin and Candy’s antics. In the original ending, Del followed Neal all the way home. In the train scene, where Neal thinks about Del and laughs, Martin didn’t know the camera was rolling. To get the new ending he wanted, Hughes and editor Paul Hirsch went back to look for footage they previously didn’t think would be used. Hughes had kept the cameras rolling in between takes on the Chicago train, without his lead’s knowledge, while Martin was thinking about his next lines. Hughes thought Martin had a “beautiful expression” on his face in that unguarded moment, which he inserted into the film. A version of this story ran in 2017; it has been updated for 2022. Keep up the good work.

I was an unspottable extra in this movie. The scene I was in was at the bus station where the three girls buy the shower curtain hooks as earrings. I've watched this movie many times and I cannot see any trace of me. I probably just didn't make the big show, and ended up on the cutting room floor. I understand they shot A LOT more footage than they used. RIP John Candy

So many great scenes. Favorite line might be the "picked up by testicles" one.

I think it’s hilarious that every single person who’s ever seen this movie says: “He’s going to forget his wallet.” It’s the most telegraphed incoming disaster ever.

It’s even more hilarious that it’s somewhat subverted by something even worse happening.

At 7:00 you said "Is he [John] going to start a fire at some point?" At 15:38 you said "Something's going to happen with their car though --with their luck." You were right on the money both times. You predicted both things. You are prescient. As a newbie to your channel I like your reactions. (You must have heard that a time or two.)

In the original script there are earlier scenes where Neal's wife is convinced he’s having an affair & that’s the real reason why he’s run into so many ‘delays’ - she believes it's so he can spend time with the other woman. So when Neal finally makes it home at31:07 and has Del with him, she knows he was telling the truth all along. That's why she says "Hello Mr Griffiths" and hugs Neal so tenderly. It adds a layer of poignancy but was cut as Hughes felt it was too much sentimentality. I disagree, I think there's been so much hilarity that it could stand a little pathos. The editing also means his wife's acting was a little 'off' as she played it with her suspicions throughout so axing the other scenes makes her seem a little strange to me.

TBH I'm glad those scenes were cut because it would have ruined their reunion for me, and maybe even made her unsympathetic, whereas her NOT having that suspicion really brought home how much her and Neil love each other. A real rarity in movies. Besides, I think having her character so much on the periphery and focusing almost entirely on Neil & Del worked perfectly for their bond.

@@DavidGowers I agree with this. I don't know about "sentimentality," but the scenes would alter how you feel about the characters. With those scenes in the movie, it means either his wife is a jealous nut who doesn't trust her husband, or he's a jerk and has given her a reason to be suspicious of him having an affair.

Addie, there's an old Steve Martin/Michael Cain comedy called "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" that you might like. But, a great movie you'll LOVE is "Uncle Buck" that will make you fall in love with John Candy. (You'll understand why every Canadian's heart sank when John passed away)
