In his video, Keith Merrow explicitly states he only changed pickups and left the rest of signal chain unchanged across all takes. Second, from Glen videos we know that different pickups can vary in their output levels. Third, nonlinear processing such as distortion is very sensitive to input levels. So we can explain such big difference in tone by varying amp and pedal input levels. To make a proper comparison, the guitar performances should be reamped, and then normalised to the same LUFS level (as per ITU-R BS.1770), and then fed back to the processing chain to get the final mixes. It’s like with those early experiments for determining how high can humans perceive frequencies, where speakers used for tests produced intermodulation distortion that created harmonics down in the audible range. As soon as this technical issue was fixed, no super hearing ability were detected :)

The reason there are very limited pickup tests is because of the extreme amount of work it takes to actually do. It has to be the same guitar, not different shapes, not different strings (A double locking tremolo helps here because you can remove the bridge without removing the strings). Most people won't put in the work. That guitar you used was really nifty, but it's tough for most people because they've never used that brand of pickups.
@Dragonfyre1372 ай бұрын
That's a valid point. But if PU manufacturers make bold claims about the tonal qualities of pickups, they should spend some time and ressources to provide evidence (e.g. frequency response graphs and AB comparisons) to back it up.
@travisspaulding22222 ай бұрын
@@Dragonfyre137 DiMarzio kind of does that by putting a number value on their pickups for bass, low mids, high mids, treble, and output. That's probably as good as it's going to get because of the dangers of a lawsuit. They can put all the frequency graphs in the world on their site, but what happens when someone uses a Greenback at home when the pickup manufacturer used a V30, so they sue for false advertisement because their mids are lacking. The truth is, there are so many variables in a signal chain, it is almost impossible to isolate the pickup and say, this is the difference because once you swap the another component, it affects the final product. That's just the guitar tone. When you record, you are introducing an entire new signal chain that processes the sound from the original signal chain, so how much of that tone gets homogenized being processed through a digital signal?

@travisspaulding22222 ай бұрын
@@BOATIE141 You would have to ask them. Just because one company might put themselves out there, it doesn't mean all will. Especially since Graph tech is a Canadian company where I'm pretty sure they are not as lawsuit happy as in the United States. Also, consider suing someone over a $15 nut will unlikely be as lucrative as a group of people (because class action would likely be the way to go to sue a pickup company) suing a pickup company where putting a new set of pickups on one guitar is about $300, so if people are suing because they switched pickups on multiple guitars, one person could have thousands invested in pickups. In other words, suing Graph Tech, the money just isn't there.

Being a life long Hamilton resident and having seen the odd live gig there, it's a super cool place, an old small church converted to a super cool recording studio and sometimes live event space, just north of downtown in a residential neighborhood. The studio was co-founded by the late great Dan Achen who was also the co-founder and guitar player in 90's CanRock band Junkhouse, who died way too young 14 years ago from a undiagnosed heart condition while playing in his usual beer hockey league. Just suddenly dropped on the ice. There was a fear the studio might have ceased without his direction, but thankfully it's continued on.

Overall it’s a super solid(state) amp with a plethora of built-in sounds that takes pedals great, which only adds to the already diverse array of tones you can get out of it stock. i love this amp and it’s never let me down at gigs or at home 7.8/10 would highly recommend :3

Just to say, there's a lot more hits if you search for DB-25 to dual RJ-45 adapter and not "DB-25 to Cat 5e" or "quad-twisted pair to something as stupid". The Cat 5e is the cable, DB-25 and RJ-45 are the connectors. The wiring system of the DB-25 is AES59. So, what you want is DB-25 male connector, PCB that has AES59 to dual RJ-45 wiring and couple RJ-45 female connectors. For those who want to follow at home, AES59 has 8 balanced channels so what you want is to get the AES59 diagram close-by and wire each hot-cold-pair into the RJ-45 pairs (each pair has it's own color and the wires are colored solid and striped, the only thing to remember is that in the standard internet cable the 1st pair nests within 3rd pair so the pin out is 2-2-3-1-1-3-4-4). You can wire all the shields together and attach them to the RJ-45 shield, but if you want to be fancy-pantsy you could use 3 RJ-45's and also wire the shields of the AES59, but that's probably too fancy and they are more or less connected to the ground at some point, so just ground them or put them into the twisted-pair shield (connect them together and attach to the shielded RJ-45 housing). Pretty straight forward and easy training project to anyone wanting to try out PCB designing, just connect A's to B's and try to be efficient with the wiring. Wait couple weeks for your connectors and PCB's to get to you and get your soldering training too.

Extinction level Event has changed my music from night to day. Two years ago, i was mixing songs, and getting middling to poor reviews on Glenn’s show. So i never released my music. I felt really self conscious about it. Vocals were there, guitars, bass, all fine. But the drums, Superior Drummer 3, just didn’t ‘feel’ right for my genre. Then i got ELE. And within two months, i released my first solo EP. That program gave me the confidence to show my solo music off to the world. It made mixing a breeze. The drums are basically mix ready. The whole kit is mix and match, and I’ve created my own kit, so my stuff has a common sound. If you have to program drums, or if you play an electronic kit, i cannot suggest this set of drum sounds any more. Thanks to Spectre Digital for creating a BANGER of a drum program!!

From my experience changing pickups and amps and cabs in a live band environment, you definitely hear a difference from all of them. Even pickup swaps make a difference. I swap between Seymour Duncan Invaders and Black Winters, and the out of box tone is quite different. I will say, though, that I can easily EQ my rig to get the same tone or very close, no matter what combination I use. I use multiple EQs in different parts of my signal chain, and it gives me tons of flexibility with different gear. How much more can you EQ just about any amp or pickup to sound the same, in the studio...

The new Neural NAM Player from Dimehead seems absolutely insanely good! :D World record hardware latency at only 0.5ms and of course the worlds currently most accurate amp capture software. I had a Kemper, loved it, great stuff, but they really gotta develop a Kemper 2.0 to compete with the Nam Player for capturing accuracy. There was always something slightly off with Kemper profiles (often missing information in the low-mids no matter how many times I repeated the profiling process) NAM Player doesnt have much FX built in tho, currently limited to reverbs and delays.... But I am sure most metal players can be 100% fine with the current features. Not sure how the hardware works, maybe a software update allows for some rudamentary fx like chorus, flanger etc some day. Would be cool if you could review that beast!

GLENN!! Here's something I'd love to see an instructional video on, which migh tie in with the NAM video you're planning to shoot. When recording guitar in the box instead of with a microphone on a live amp, how do you get the "wall of feedback" sound that a lot of doom bands use for certain sections of their songs? I'm thinking some of Windhand's stuff where one guitar might play an intro while the other guitar and bass are just feeding back and it sounds massive. My idea (which I haven't had a chance to test) is to use the Axe I/O One to run the signal out to my Seymour Duncan Powerstage and into a small cabinet that's loud enough to get the desired feedback without bothering the neighbors too much, but I'd love to learn that there's a better way.

I've got an Atomic Amplifire and it's awesome. You can buy them used for around £200 ($250). If it's good enough for Satchel to use as his live rig it's good enough for me to use at home.

A big plus 1 for replicating the KM pickup video!! Question for when you get around to it, will you be using the same pickups he did as well? My hunch about your previous test using the guitar with the swappable pickup system is that that company might not be putting a lot of effort into differentiating their pickup offerings? At least when compared to a company like Seymour Duncan and the history / experience they have with pickups? Happy to be proven wrong when you do your version of the experiment :)

Nah. Think of a primitive water filter with big rocks on one end, with smaller rocks, pebbles, gravel and sand at the other end. Changing any of the smaller rocks won't affect the quality of the filtered water that comes out from the sand end. Any particles that would be changed would still get filtered out before it comes out the sand end. The same happens with sound being filtered all the way to the the speaker. Giving Keith the max respect to his demo, but there was too many variables for him to control and that's not on him. My speculation for Keith's tests that there were one or a mix of: slightly different pickup heights, possible string changes, not gain/level matching, or small changes in the electrical signal integrity during re-soldering each pickup. Again speculating and not entirely Keith's fault at that time. Now there are other pickups that don't require soldering and would allow him to do a similar test as Glenn did. That's what makes Glenn's test with the modular pickups better. His focus is entirely on one and only one variable changing! That was their chance to shine solo and demonstrate their contribution to tone. Glenn could also try to use regular guitars and swap around solder-less pickups like EMG's, Fishmans, etc. to see if there is other evidence to back up his other test.

Yeah i just got rid of an extra wah pedal because there was something wrong with the ground and it made my entire rig noisy AF. The forensic "whats making that sound" dance 😂

Hey Glen! I use an Aston Microphones Origin + a Sennheiser e906 to capture guitars for live shows and some recording and the pair sounds phenomenal 😁

So I actually went and watched that video by Keith Merrow. There does seem to be some difference between pickups, but I am left with the same conclusion as before - the pickups dont make enough of a difference to justify the few hundred bucks to spend on them. The differences between pickups also seemed to be small enough that some good EQing would probably negate the differences as well.
@Xavasius2 ай бұрын
Honestly I can't really tell much difference during your pickup tests but was able to pick out JB during Keith's test while only listening to the video (that's my golden ears moment lol). Maybe it has something to do with how you mix your stuff, how much gain is added etc?

I'm thankful to have found your channel when I did, as I've turned from wanting special pickups to wanting to try more speakers. Any chance we could see a 2x12 pairing of a Celestion G12T-75 and its Type-A counterpart? Been thinking of a getting a Type-A for a while but I'm curious how it would sound it that configuration before I spend the money on it. Keep it up Glenn!

Here's a crazy question, how do you mic someone playing drums on buckets ? I bought a couple of plastic buckets in an attempt to get away from the sound of the drum machine. Does anyone have any experience recording that kind of thing ?
@cuetangclan2 ай бұрын
I wouldn’t even bother with the POD GO. If you’re not out playing every night you could just get one of the Nux MG series. Crap ton of IRs, amps and effects. You don’t have to spend a lot to get massive tones.

I have a suggestion on what you can test - pinch harmonics. Everyone knows how to do pinch harmonics, but there aren't any videos about how different amps/amp settings affect pinch harmonics. And i don't mean gain, i mean bass, mid, treble. Do pinch harmonics always sound the same? If not, what settings affect the pinch harmonics in which way?
@NabPunk2 ай бұрын
Hello Glenn! I was wondering what you think of finger-drumming on midi pads instead of buying a whole E-Kit for recording drums. Could it be possible, or am I better off buying an Alesis Nitro-Max?
@thatfatguy45082 ай бұрын
Hey glen, I'm not sure if it is exactly what you would be looking for, but you can get stems for every Metallica song that is in any guitar hero game that has drum compatibility, if you download songs for clone hero that are ripped from the original games the files will have each instrument as separate .ogg files

Sometimes it can be hard getting a pickup mounted in exactly the same place. This has a huge impact on AB testing. Less of and impact the more gain and distortion you use tho. Just some Food for thought

Glenn a great guitar for under $500.00 would definitely be the Ibanez gio GRGR131DX . Such a gem of a guitar. 16" radius. 24fret. It does THE METAL THING WELL! even get some nice blues rock tones off the pick up voicings.

Hey Glenn, Is there much of a difference sound-wise between recording an actual bass vs just recording guitar and pitching the DI track down an octave?

Hmm. That’s actually a great question!

Katana 50 MkII for about a year I think. Being able to control it via software on my PC is pretty damn cool. Sounds great - enough for me to be done with buying amps, actually.
@zapiexa49472 ай бұрын
Re: Boss Katana I've bought Katana 50 mk. 2 in Febuary and to playing my own songs in my garage or bedroom it's perfect. I spend some time to get really nice tone and I think it would be also loud enough to play rehearseals with drums or concerts in small bars. I tried to use Katana for recording without internal cab sim with additional IRs in chain and it sounded like shit. And I definetly didn't make a mistake with double IR's, I heard that recorded signal is harsh, just like when I recorded using distortion pedal in interface input. I think I will have to put much more time and efford to make it sound good. I think I would be great if you record a tutorial how to get good tone from raw Katana's signal with using some IRs and later EQ etc.

As far as Katanas go they’re great amps. But, if you don’t mind a sim Otto Audio II II Amp is AWESOME. It has a free trial and is very affordable. One of my most satisfying purchases.

I had the kali audio LP8 and they really disappointed me. In the end I exchanging them for a set of the Focal Twin Evo dual 6.5 and these things rock. Yes the Focal monitors cost more but I personally think they are worth every penny. Thank you so much Sweetwater for working with me and letting me test out the monitors and exchange them no questions asked. I wouldn't recommend the kali monitors. I think you will be disappointed. They are hyped up entirely too much in my humble opinion.
