This fungus lives on your scalp and may affect the genes you express.
Check out Head & Shoulders research on getting rid of dandruff: ve42.co/HS
Animation by Pindex: ve42.co/pindex
When I started this project, I wasn't sure what caused dandruff and I also didn't think much science would go into making a shampoo like Head & Shoulders. So what I learned really surprised me:
There are hundreds of scientists working on this shampoo. They run crazy-sounding experiments like hanging hair near Tokyo highways to understand how real-world environments deposit dirt on hair. They use sophisticated scientific techniques like electron microscopes, nuclear magnetic resonance and gene sequencing to study dandruff on the molecular level.
In fact they sequenced the entire genome of Malassezia globosa in 2002, one year after the human genome project. Their findings are published in international refereed journals. What they have found is that the Malassezia fungi create free fatty acids as byproducts of their digestion, which for some people create irritation and lead to hyper-proliferation of skin cells, flaking, histamines, inflammatory cytokines, and blood proteins reaching the surface of the skin. These findings indicate the unhealthiness of dandruff scalp and suggest a possible remedy - controlling the metabolism of the Malassezia fungi. This is achieved using different active ingredients in different products and different parts of the world, including zinc pyrithione, selenium sulfide, and piroctone olamine. With the reduction of irritants, the scalp actually expresses different genes, producing a signature more similar to a non-dandruff baseline scalp.

This is a good channel but I'm shaking my head a little on this one. I'm sure Head & Shoulder's research is valid and either builds on or is validated by other peer-reviewed studies, but I would have liked to hear even one sentence from him confirming that. Without discussing the level of scientific consensus, this video reeks of paid promotion. Credibility is easier to lose than it is to gain, just sayin'.

There are so many causes, it really depends on each person. Some people just have dry skin and either need to stop washing their head as often or use a moisturizer. Other people have bacteria problems and need medicated shampoos like head&shoulder, a tea tree oil one, or something like sulfate shampoo. There's also very specific medical conditions like psoriasis on the scalp which means it'll never go away, you can only reduce it with medication.

I used head & shoulders for 10 years and it really helped me get rid of dandruff. Or so I thought, one day I was told by my hairdresser that the reason I was getting dandruff was because my head was used to head & shoulders. And maybe I didn't actually have dandruff. So I stopped using it and at first the dandruff came back and my head was itching like crazy but after a couple of months, no dandruff and no itching. Now I use quality shampoo recommended by my hairdresser but I use it much less. Only once maybe every 2-3 weeks. My hair is doing great. Feels like these corporations make us addicted to their products. Or at least make you think that you have a problem with your hair while you might not really have one. I think your hair can do fine naturally. At least it worked for me. Try it out 👍

(Just thinking out loud here) it seems to me that the Head and Shoulders solution, while effective, doesn't address the root cause of dandruff which is caused by one's own immune system unnecessarily freaking out at the byproducts caused by Malassezia. If our immune system is primarily driven by our genetics, maybe there could be a gene therapy developed to address this. (Crispr, anyone?) Targeting and/or disrupting the natural Malassezia on the skin could cause other issues by disrupting the balance of skin flora.

That would require a whole ton of research, and probably not fixable with just crispr. Gene therapy is used for single gene defects mostly, but in this case, a whole bunch of genes probably play a role, which would all have to be edited. This is also not possible as you would have to infect every immune cell in the body to give them the cirspr system. The only option to modify the genes in every cell, is to do it in an embryo and then letting it develop to a human so you only have to change one cell. however ethics are not developed in this field so it would never be accepted to do so. TLDR: Not possible

It's also interesting that when they were showing the gene signatures, the said "after 3 weeks of H&S, you see a difference" what about 3 weeks of treatment with other shampoos? Wording and comparisons are important here.

They don’t have to show different shampoos. The main point of the video is to show why people have dandruff. Of course the video is going to show H&S bragging about their product, but at the same time, they listed out chemicals that help relieve dandruff, so if you want to try out other shampoos that have those ingredients, you are more than welcome to do so.

@Singularity He didn't get it quite right. It's more like this: Corporations that produce anti-dandruff products are incentivized to make it appear as though their products are helping you, while actually exacerbating the problem so that you have an incentive to continue buying the product. For many people proper daily exfoliation is the only thing necessary to get rid of dandruff. Chemicals that dry the scalp and strip away naturally occurring oils only make the problem of dandruff worse in the long run. That's my theory, anyways. I shampoo once or twice a month and my scalp has never been less itchy. But also: different strokes for different folks. I'm not a dermatologist, so take all that with a grain of...uhhh... dandruff?
@Edu-ch5be

Would you trust a tobacco company to tell you the science of smoking? H&S job is to sell the most shampoo possible, and I wouldn't be shocked if it's not as straight forward as they make it seem in the video. After all, if the goal is to reduce dandruff, the outcome measured should be the amount of dandruff, not a gene expression that might be related and a fungus we think may be involved but lives on everyone's scalp regardless. Their estimate of 50% of people having dandruff is likely inflated by stretching the definition because the dead skin has to come of at some point. Tobacco companies would also talk about seemingly related facts that work in their favor, like "no throat irritation in those that took their 30 day challenge," and this fungus science sounds like the crafted side discussion that's designed to sell instead of a randomized consumer test that compares no shampoo use to various shampoos with measured amount of daily dandruff along with other factors. Was the active ingredient in the shampoo even mentioned? The product may work and be great, but whenever the facts are coming from a company they need to be approached with skepticism. A company isn't going to spend time and money on research and educating people unless it makes them money back in some way. They'll never sell you a cure for dandruff you take once, but they will sell you a temporary solution you have to use every day.

I used to get dandruff quite regularly, esp. in winter. In the past I've used various anti-dandruff shampoos inc. H&S as well as coal tar shampoo. About 2 yrs ago, I decided as an experiment to stop using shampoo/conditioner and simply wash my hair with warm water and a fine toothed comb. The first month wasn't the best as my sebum levels went a bit crazy, but that all settled and my hair is now neither overly dry or oily nor have I had any dandruff since. Sure, it's a single sample and not something cosmetics companies would want popularised. But, considering shampoo is simply glorified detergent, it's no wonder that it is possibly also responsible for scalp irritation. In my case, I've saved a small fortune while solving my own dandruff issues.
@vink6163
@vink6163 5 жыл бұрын
I tried doing the same thing but unfortunately after a couple of months my scalp was just too itchy and I had to go back to using something because it was just unbearable. I stick with coal tar shampoo now as none of those active ingredients seem to be in the Head & Shoulders sold in my country (at least not when I last used it a few years ago), and when I last looked into it, H&S was more about breaking up the dandruff into small pieces so you wouldn't notice it rather than fixing the underlying cause. It's a shame because I would've much preferred to go without shampoo and just wash my hair in water but alas I wasn't able to.

He is using a fine comb to help with this to a degree, but you would have to wash with a finer than a normal comb for an effective result. So if you have thick hair, you can forget it. Reason being, the fat will remain and cause pimples in your skin which will produce unhealthy irritation and further intensify the issue. I mean, try use the warm water you shower in to remove Fat in a pan from frying. You don't move it out of way. And if you scrub it, it still doesn't disappear. If you use boiling water, it still doesn't disappear. It still remains till you do a full scrubbing with shampoo. Sure, after a month or two, your hair will have its own bacterial stabilization, but that in itself doesn't work since Washing your hair with Chlorine/Chloramine water simply kills it. You would have to use non chlorinated/chloramine water for this procedure. Which doesn't work if you Live in a city on state regulated water. Chloramine water doesn't vanish for over 7 days unless you boil it 12 hours straight. So, you can forget the whole "natural way of cleaning". Since it doesn't work in a modern society unless you want to smell. Smokers probably won't care but people that don't smoke might not want to stick too close for too long. I wash my hair every 2 or 3 days, as before, and apply oil if my head scratches too much. The first week was really bad. Lots of scratching, large patches of dandruff, and red patches. But now I'm nearing my third week and I can actually feel I have a much healthier scalp. And dandruff is nowhere near as bad as it was before! Here is my head and shoulders story. I worked pt at ups while going to college. Hands hot filthy from sorting boxes plus we hand stamped back then to track packages so also got hands covered in ink stains. Soap, degreasers, mechanics goo, bleach, couple with nail brushes it wire cleaning brushes would not get your hands clean. Then a guy told me to use head and shoulders and a scrubber. Hands would clean up completely. So I can’t attest to how effective hand s is on dandruff, but if it strips away grime and grease and ink with relative ease I would be a little afraid to use on my scalp with all those delicate hair follicles.

I switched to using ORS products years ago after suffering with dry scalp and dandruff since junior high, and my scalp and hair have never been healthier. Cantu shampoos and other more natural brands work too. I use ORS creamy aloe shampoo, and while not sulfate free, it still is excellent. Sometimes ORS black olive products if I can find them as they are sulfate free. I think these active ingredients are kind of pointless if the inactive ingredients dry and irritate your scalp just the same.

Head and Shoulders also uses the silicone Demithocone. This silicone stays on your scalp and your hair folicles. So the problem you suffer from is maybe that builded up silicone. You aren't able to wash this off as easy, instead you have to switch to non-silicone shampoos. Also you have to use once a week a non-silicone clarifying shampoo. After 3 weeks, you're able to see a difference beacause this builded up silicone will break up and not causing dry skin flakes on your scalp. So try it out!

@@celinaalabbas9281 Do you mean Dimethicone? The purpose of it is to protect the hair shaft from abrasion. Can you provide a source for that information. There seems to be many great ingredients for hair care targeted at different solutions from dandruff to removing grime. I'm not sure whether there are good all-around solutions though but I'm still searching for it. Or at least few different products that can be used in intervals for overall healthy hair.

In my opinion, Head & Shoulders causes dandruff. I can't explain why it works like this, but this is from my experience. I used to have dandruff, and I was using a lot of dandruff shampoo, including Head & Shoulders. It didn't work. One day, I was desperate, and seeing that the treatment didn't work, I decided to stop it. A few days later, I didn't have dandruff anymore, and I never had it ever since. It's been more than 10 years since I stopped using dandruff shampoo and stopped having dandruff.

For 32 years i had Dandruff, flakes big as 1cm square. Tried all sorts of stuff, Sulfate shampoos, Olive oil, Beer, Vinegar, Sodium bicarbonate, all natural shampoos like nettle poo and even tried the "no poo" thing for few months (this had a visible change to better, but i didn't solve the issue). Head and shoulders (all types i could find) and on the end, few moths ago a dermatologist gave a prescription of a Sulfur powder with some liquid, so i could apply it from the bottle to my scalp. After the first treatment i saw results after the 3rd i had no more dandruff. First time after 32 years i'm flakeless :)

@Omidion
@Omidion 6 жыл бұрын
So it's called "Mix. Sulfur R" and the pharmacist told me that they dilute the powder with alcohol and glycerol, she said they just put the basic stuff for diluting the Sulfur powder. They make the mixture for the face or head. After few hours the powder settles down and i have to shake it before usage, it smells like matches and it's milky white.

Omidion oh my god im extremely sorry if these questions are getting annoying, but how long do you keep it in before you wash it off?
@Omidion
@Omidion 6 жыл бұрын
No need to be sorry, i just realized my answer wasn't complete, i am at fault here. I bought it at my local pharmacy, it's nothing fancy or branded, it's just a mundane mixture they make on the spot. So you apply it once every 2-3 days directly on you scalp. Best way ,i found, was to pour some in a bowl and use a hair dying brush. Since i have long hair it was a bit of a hassle so i got my wife to do it :) She would split my hair every 1cm and apply the mixture with the brush. The doctor told me to cut my hair, since it's much easier to apply directly to the scalp when u have bald/short hair. So...there is no need to put it everywhere on your hair, just the scalp (the skin of your head). No need to wash the hair before or after and the hair should be dry. You keep the mixture on your head well...all the time. Downside is that you'll constantly smell matches and it gets annoying very fast, even your clothes and pillow and especially if you workout and get hot :) If i missed anything, please ask. I'll try and help in any way i can.

For anyone who isn’t aware your head can flake from dandruff or dry scalp which are two different things so if dandruff shampoo isn’t working it’s probably because you’ve got dry scalp and are only making it worse by drying your scalp out with shampoo.
