It was for a very long time while it aired. I think a lot of people had been burned by mystery series that botched the ending, plus it not having the benefit of a built-in fanbase and the unfortunate preconceptions that the art style brings with it. After Odd Taxi proved that indeed it would stick the landing, a lot more people jumped on board. It has now cracked the top 30 on MyAnimeList, which it very much deserves and I can't say that it is underappreciated anymore. Anime of the Season, very likely the year and a strong early contender for anime of the decade.

It was a pleasant surprise and went under the radar during emission but to this day I wouldn't call it unappreciated because, in any anime channel or blog which has dedicated a moment to talk about the series, it has been full of praises and awe. It still needs to receive some shoutouts so more ppl turn to watch it in watchever streaming site they have available but is doing good so far

I was hoping you guys would also mention the fact that animation studios get more money and exercise more control over original anime because they own the IP. With adaptations, production committees and publishers rake in most of the profits while paying animation studios as little as possible and often making unrealistic production demands. Supporting original anime supports animation studios more directly.

Some Original anime that start off really good though but do fall apart midway or at the very end (scheduling, production issues) cause there is no story format to follow, they need to be creative even when they're all tied up or burnt out, like Wonder Egg Priority or The Time I became a god.

For Lupin III, I feel like both The Woman Called Fujiko Mine and Part IV are good places to jump on. Fujiko Mine is what reenergized the franchise under the direction of Sayo Yamamoto of Yuri On Ice fame, turning each episode into a veritable arthouse film exploring the mind of the titular character. Part IV on the other hand took that energy and integrated it with the style of the 70's and 80's runs, creating a sprawling and insane story involving spies, gansters, and long dead Renaissance artists. And don't worry about continuity. So long as you know the core cast, it doesn't matter too much.

on Anime spending too many episodes on one thing, that's how I felt about the 8 or so episodes dedicated to the Class A vs Class B arc in MHA S5

The Anime did that arc in 10 episodes. Those 10 episodes covered 24 manga chapters for the same arc and also did a mention in the last episode of that arc that referenced a 23 chapter arc that they aren't even animating. They shortened it by a lot in the Anime.

Great point. And ODDTAXI was so impeccable! The way it tied up every last story thread, and turned your whole perspective on it's head in that last ep... The music, V.A, animation, EVERYTHING was perfect. And I never believed in the idea of a "perfect" anime, their are some genuinely solid 9's out there but there's usually some shortcoming or another... but man, Vivy, and ODDTAXI really challenged my preconceptions.

Another Dorrie banger! One studio / creator that wasn't included here are my all time faves in Maasaki Yuasa / Eunyoung Choi / Science Saru. Kaiba is my favorite anime of all time (god I wish more people would check it out! Music, story, art style... all absolutely stunning), and Kemonozume is truly unlike anything I've ever seen.

Dorrie, you can watch any Lupin III series or movie and not be lost! There's some continuity between series, but not enough to leave a new fan confused. Two things, though: 1) The Woman Named Fujiko Mine *is* a prequel of sorts, but the vibe is very different than most Lupin; and 2) Don't start with Part 1 of the anime! 💗 Try out Part 5, actually!

I think the reason I, and a lot of others, are drawn to anime-original shows is because they stand out far more. Some of my favourite anime ever like Cowboy Bebop, Space Dandy and Redline are so visually distinct compared to other shows that from their poster alone you would be drawn to them. The same applies to certain seasonal shows like Great Pretender and Odd Taxi, where they share this very trait.

I’ve experienced Lupin the Third on Toonami but only Part 4 and 5, yet I was still engaged with the stories that the show present despite not knowing anything about it. Basically since each part are self-contained I wouldn’t worry about starting from scratch and just choose any season to watch. Also VRV/Crunchyroll or Hidive have all the Parts available too.

Gurren Lagann owes so much to Getter Robo, ESPECIALLY Shin Getter Robo The Last Day. From Spiral energy, to the Anit-Spirals, the combination of robots, EVEN the scratchy animation when pilots scream out finishing attacks to the chorus of banging music, none of it would even exist without Shin Getter Robo!

Another director that makes AMAZING original animes, is Kunihiko Ikuhara, most well known as the creator of Revolutionary Girl Utena. His works are all really great, but also really, REALLY bizarre. They're full of weird images and scenery, full of really interesting and complex symbolism and a really creative narrative style. Unfortunaly, aside from Utena, his other works are not that well known, but they are totally worth it; his other works are: Mawaru Penguindrum, Yuri Kuma Arashi and the most recent, Sarazanmai. All of these shows are really amazing and if you liked the weird and bizarre style in Utena, you will probably like his other works as well.

Deep dive idea: Anime video games. How they utilize and interpret the source material and how accurately they do it. Lots of games based on anime have their own filler arcs and summarize the show in weird ways. Like one of the Naruto fighting games on Wii included their own filler arc and playable filler characters. Weird arm cannon guy, but also a really cool ex-anbu ninja lady. Or interesting differences or something? For example, I think I heard recently how there's a character in a One Piece game that got a full 4Kids style voiced role in the game, but the character never appeared in the 4Kids dub?

Regarding Lupin, I'd say where you start doesn't matter as much because Lupin is less of a story with continuity than a premise that facilitates stories. I'd suggest part two, it's just lot's of fun starting off with "red jacket" Lupin in my opinion.

Redline is my favorite original anime film. Took 7 years to make and supposedly almost bankrupt madhouse studios I got into lupin the third last year after watching castle of cagliostro enjoyed it. Found out the director of Redline made 3 OVAs spinoffs for the woman called Fujiko Mine. Bought them I love those OVAs. Saw the first lupin the third series. Saw the first three movies. So what I'm trying to say start from the beginning or watch Lupin the third the woman called Fujiko Mine and its three OVAs if you want the more adult gritty lupin the third thats not totally goofy

I gotta say, I feel like I *should* be terrified of Dorrie, as she can leap and attack from places I can't fit in, but I'm not. Rather, any threat could be averted by feeding her candy, meat (bacon apparently) and Blu Ray box sets of anime regularly. Cristal is more likely to summon a demon, but Dorrie would immediately make it her sidekick, dress it up and go terrorize the Upper West side with it while livestreaming, leaving Cristal pouting and annoyed but glued to the stream because rampaging demon. Curt would quickly make a video asking "Is it wrong to steal your friends brand new demon?"

I think if you wanna watch Lupin the 3rd you can probably jump in at "Lupin part IV" then maybe jump around to "A women named Fujiko" then "Lupin part V" Then you can just go back and watch the older stuff. The older series are more episodic but are equally amazing.

Yeah, many people are not really care about original anime. I'm really hope more people give more attention to original anime. Odd Taxi is great but not many people watch it. P.A Work, Trigger and Sunrise always make original anime. Sunrise. When their shows done well, they're going making them more. I mean, Gundam Build series have more than 100 episodes and Love Live series have more than 60 episodes. Love Live somehow have great animation for moe anime. Love Live is actually start with MV (Bokura no Live Kimi to no Life MV). They're always release some MV before the anime. I mean, Love Live Superstar (the new one) have MV (Hajimari wa Kimi no Sora MV) before the anime.

9:21 Now that you mention Gen Urobuchi Let's not forget he directed Kamen Rider Gaim and some producers involved in Gurren Laggan directed Kamen Rider Fourze, which pretty much feels like it got tones of character types seen on Studio TRIGGER specially which even made an original adaptation of a Tokusatsu show from Tsuburaya Productions Gridman ( as I heard, their work was seen as much better compared to the Ultraman Anime that was adapting the Manga reinterpretation )

I love Urobuchi's body of work, especially the first season of Psycho-Pass (haven't watched the newer stuff from the series and season 2 was a disappointing mess cause he wasn't involved other than for story composition). While it didn't get any anime adaptation (yet!), I've played and beaten one of his crown jewels in his Treasure Box of Darkness: the Visual Novel Saya no Uta - The Song of Saya, aka one of the most mindfuck project I've ever seen/heard/played in my life. Around 8 hours of pure nightmare fuel that'll make the great Junji Ito and Go Nagai blush IMO lol. You should totally check that one out! I'm sure Demon Girl Dorrie will love it and might make a video out of it later on. :P
