Ancestry DNA Test Results! WHAT'S YOUR ETHNICITY? Comment below! Get YOURS for $59 Ancestry DNA: goo.gl/RQMk93 Today we’re gonna find out what I ACTUALLY AM! Along with my friend Raki too! Everyone asks me this ALL the time! Asian? Black?? White? In this video, I’ll be talking to you guys about the differences between ethnicity and race, along with what ethnicities I actually am! What I talk about in this video are my experiences and my opinions about different things regarding ethnicity and race. Some African-American may be almost full African, very rare but it happens and others have more European ancestry. As a child I grew up ~going along~ with the one drop rule but as I got older, I realized that actually has no logic and I just go by what I actually am, mixed :)

Can you imagine what some of the comments would be here, especially from black folks, if there was a white person up here with 70% European ancestry and 30% Sub-Saharan African ancestry? How many do you think would say that person is not white? Yet we still call a person that is 30% European, black. Although the one drop rule is gone and defunct (some dummies still believe in it though, I kid you not), the effects of it still linger in how people are identified and how they self identify in the US.

El Matador 100% agree. Being over 1/4 of any ethnicity is basically like having one parent that is half another ethnicity. The culture may not be there, but it doesn’t change your dna. The fact that none of my grandparents were predominantly White just shows that all of my immediate family has quite strong European ancestry for it to show up as 30% in me. If a White person was 30% Black... they would most likely look pretty obviously mixed. Yet, when I don’t look full African, people still are like “but you should only say you’re black” “or whatever you’re mostly black!! just identify with that”. Of course there’s the historical aspect.. but it doesn’t change what I am. Like White people rn can’t just not claim being White just because their embarrassed or ashamed or don’t agree with what their ancestors did. Thanks for your point of view!

I guess you believe your conundrum and feeble minded analysis sounds intelligent or smart?, I am convinced your comments cater to ignorance and you totally miss the point as to why some people identify with being socialized black regardless of percentage. First i must note that neither Black or White people actually truly exist, they are nothing more than social constructs, twentieth century concepts of mythical racial hierarchy created by whom? Those who consider themselves white. The point is it doesn't matter what percentage one has of any race, a person is going to identify with which ever race he or she considers having a cultural connection too. People who consider themselves black in America did not create the color line that society abide's too that makes us so called black, we've just learned to make our melanin benefit and empower us, If the one drop rule empowers a person to identify with there melanin or which ever racial group he or she want's, than why do you care? Or how does this effect you? If you came to the conclusion I expect of you, then just make a mature decision to(Be quite), if you don't have anything nice to say or too empower yourself or others than just don’t say anything. (Think Bigger, Be Better, Think before you speak my friend because ignorance is a choice), I know your better than your comment, its not that your all wrong, its simple your comments do not empower nor inspire so they are completely irrelevant. Good Day.

LeSweetpea パリス You’re welcome. Glad I could contribute here. If it means anything, there is a an old word from the past for a person that was 3/4 black African and 1/4 European descent and it was called “griffe”. It seems the entire black American population has transformed from black Africans to American griffes. When DNA studies are done on black Americans, they are sometimes referred to as Euro-African Americans. Because black today is not what black was in the past. Black has been diluted. Many black Americans are often lighter than their black African counterparts from West Africa and Central Africa due to European admixture. Many may have different texture hair or colored or semi-colored eyes. Others may have facial features influenced by European ancestry such as thinner longer noses or flatter foreheads or bone structure. The European ancestry found in black Americans is substantial enough to create changes in the population that they won’t be identical to their West African counterparts. But this is what makes them unique in appearance. Black Americans are not just black and I think many never knew that they were partially mixed race. But DNA testing is bringing the truth out. It is what it is and blacks can only go with it because it’s who they are now.
@IslenoGutierrez

jacob cotton No matter who created any color lines or what rules about color existed in the past, the fact is we now live in a time when science can point to our ancestries and enlighten us with the knowledge in exactly what we are, no matter how we came to be. It’s true, race has a social side as we can see black Americans are mixed race but can socially still be black. This is because of course of past laws such as the one drop rule, which is a now defunct law and has no credibility in the 21st century and if anyone uses it as a basis for their argument it goes to show your their ignorance. But regardless if this now defunct, meaningless law is gone, the after effect still lingers from the fact that the American public whether black or not, still identifies partially black people as black, rather than mixed race. It also lingers in the form of various Americans believing in it and often using it in their arguments. Race also has a biological side as well. Yes, white or black can be social as it can identify people on a social level of rather they are members or not, despite admixture. But race’s biological side exists as ethnicities of a group based on geographical factors in relation to evolution. So European is your white or Sub-Saharan is your black. But I’d like to think of those as your true race since social race may overcome your biological true race often. There is one real race and that is the human race. But what biological race is, is the evolutional pattern of groups within the human race in which groups have diverged. Social race is the part where society dictates who is to be such race, regardless of their biological race. Biologically, black Americans are mixed race people. Socially, black Americans are black. But once upon a time, black Americans were biologically “black” as they were fully sub-Saharan (true black). But this has changed. Black Americans have changed race biologically, but not socially. I don’t want to make this a “blame whitey” session, because I think we need to get past that in the 21st century. As Americans, we can’t heal and move forward if someone’s always picking at the scab. However, I think it’s to be noted the differences in how we identify according to social race vs. biological race. There’s not a doubt in my mind that social race rules over biological race. As we can see from examining the case of black Americans.

Her eyes and light skin are from the whiteness in her. That’s why she looks so good. White is the one race that will make any other race look good. Vanilla goes good with everything. Not my opinion just a fact. Lighter skinned people by far are considered more attractive. White mixed with black is such a nice combination to, because their is such a contrast. Black and Asian can make some weird looking people though imo. Chocolate does not go well with everything, but vanilla does. White people can go out in the sun and get a beautiful tan, and eventually get very dark if they wanted. White people can have an infinite number of shades. They can become any color they want.

the thing is regardless of how much european and how much african you are % wise the genes that effect your appearance will have been randomly passed down to you from your ancestors. So even if you have more european dna you might have just inherited more of the genes that effect your appearance from your african ancestors. Thats why mixed race people can have children where one looks black and one looks white for instance.

🗣 Biracial is 50/50 🗣 Multiracial is multiple mixing 🗣 Mixed & Admixture are technically the same thing. If you are not 100% of something you are _mixed_ , whether it's from different continents or countries within the same continent. There are regions & distinct traits for a reason. No one can tell you how to identify *_but you_* . 🗣To deny percentages means to deny your ancestors. They contributed to your genetics no matter the percent. Denying European is understandable, though. (Or Chinese & Japanese tbh #Nanxing #Korea) 🗣Black people of the Americas, I guarantee you, will have the world map lit up because *they are mixed!* 🗣 Y'all need to leave this girl alone for openly claiming her mixed heritage. When you label her as Black, all you are doing is proving a point: the point that Black people of the Americas are m i x e d. So much so that we have a distinct phenotype differentiating us from the solid regions we come from. Due to so much admixture for reasons I'm not even about to explain, know your history. The real question is where should the line be drawn? If a person is 1% Sub Saharan African and 99% European are they then black? Barack Obama's mother has one known black ancestor. Is she black now too? And yes black Americans like myself ARE mixed. But where do you go from being black to being a mixed black to being simply mixed race? To me anything less than 75% of a racial group is simply mixed race.Between 75% and 94% are mixed black white Asian or whatever other race and 95% and above are simply black, white Asian as you like. There's nothing wrong with being mixed race like this sweet girl but the line needs to be drawn somewhere or else Obama's mother can technically be a black woman and I can't accept that ridiculous notion.

Buffalo New Yorker 1.) You are intelligent and already know the answer to the question and underlying question(s) you have posed. 2.) You already understood my point even with your usage of the 99 vs 1% comparison, and I understand yours. 3.) In your comparison, at some period within her lineage his mother had mixed _continental_ ancestry but now likely has largely inherited mixed ancestry within the European diaspora, ex: 33% Danes, 33% Iberian, 33%Scotts, 1%SSA. Just because percentages do not show up in your own inheritance does not mean it is not in your family's genealogy. This is basic science. She may not be culturally or socially allowed to identify as Black, but technically she is of the African diaspora due to _someone_ in her history being African and contributing that 1% throughout the decades and centuries.

African-American people are not going to be 100% black that is nearly impossible considering our ancestors have been out of Africa for over a 100 years.Obviously there is going to be at least a couple people in our blood line that is none-black same goes for most black people who are part of the African diaspora. I wouldn’t considered that mixed unless one parent or one grandparent is of another race.

Molly Wop Funny because I’m Igbo and people think I’m American. And vice versa. Yes they came from across west Africa but the Europeans were fond of igbos because they were strong. I’m sure you know igbos drowned themselves to avoid slavery. When scholars looked at the skulls of igbos and modern Americans, they found that they were almost identical! I’m just saying there is a very high chance black Americans have Igbo blood in them 😄 www.thecoli.com/threads/the-majority-of-african-americans-are-descended-from-igbo-yoruba-tribes.297019/

Great video and I'm sorry for a lot of the experiences you went through. I took mine and got my results on Tuesday. I'm 77% African and 23% European. My additional "community" or migration group is The Early Virginia African Americans with a timeline beginning from the 1700s, so that implies my African ancestors came to American from the Slave Trade. People have to know the difference between ethnicity, which is defined by a shared culture/community and "race" a social construction made up as a way making those who weren't of full European descent a lower class than them. "African Americans", the ethnic group, has a culture and identity that transcend phenotype and even genotype. It's about lineage and experience culturally. Our experience is unique and special from that perspective. That's how we(African Americans) can be "Black" as most of us have some percentage of admixture. We're a people and you're beautiful. Glad that you did the DNA test. It's awesome to know who are and embrace it all.

As if biracial people owe it to black people to identify as black , WE DON't . The more black people come at Biracial people who don't identify as black and black only the more I want to identify as Biracial , you guys act like we're your freaking property .

MixedWhisper1977 I guess it's due to the history of the use and the odr. The founder of the NAACP had 27 out of 32 white ancestror. He is basically 87% white genetically, but was classified as black due to the system to maintain racial hierarchy. I understand your frustration as you want to be proud of both your ancestors, but just look at the history of the one drop rule and how it was implemented to understand the historical significane or why they considered biracial people black.
@MixedWhisper1977
@MixedWhisper1977 6 жыл бұрын
Mari E I already know why Biracial are looked at as black , I already know about the " one drop rule " I think it's an illogical reason to call some one black and it's freaking racist . It irks me because black people have decided to adopt it and enforce it like there's nothing wrong with it and then black people expect us to blindly go along with it just because they have decided to adopt it . I think mixed people should boycott the one drop rule , that rule was meant to imply black blood was something that contaminated you , that's sick for black people to go along with that . I know some black people will say it created unity in the black community but it really didn't , for #1 true unity doesn't come through force it comes through choice . #2. The one drop rule has created a hierarchy within the black race/community with the lighter and more white your features are the better you're seen . They use Biracial people to represent black then black people get pissed off cause we're taking their spot when black peoples acceptance of the one drop rule is what helped create this . White people started it and black people are helping to keep it going . As long as Biracial people are thrown into the black category Biracial people will always take their spot and at this point it's not just the mere fact that " white people created it so it's not black peoples fault " like I hear so many black people using as their excuse for why THEY themselves go along with it , at this point it's black peoples fault for still going along with it in 2018 . No one is forcing black people to accept the "one drop rule " now , black people are doing it on their own , black people have a motive or agenda with their acceptance of the one drop rule and it's at Biracial people expense . When I say at Biracial people's expense ... I mean at the expense of forming our own Biracial identity , our own communities our own achievements , our own standard of beauty . When a Biracial person achieves something notable black people are given the credit while the Biracial person as they are is not even acknowledge as doing it, a black person is said to have done it . Black people dont even care about the psychological aspects of identity that comes from the one drop rule . The one drop rule is why so many Biracial half black people end up going through identity crisis , how logical is it to tell a Biracial child that only one of their parents matters as far as their identity goes because their mixed with a parents blood that has contaminated them and deemed their other parents blood null and void . Do you have any idea how psychologically fucked up that is for the Biracial person to try and process that crap ?? Then when the Biracial person starts showing signs of distress from trying to cope with going along with something so illogical , their the ones that are called " Tragic " when it's the system that's Tragic and the fact that black people go along with it that's tragic . Biracial people NEED their own identity, it's crucial to our psychological development but black people don't seem to care or even want to care .

I am so thankful for how African-Americans embrace our identity as Black. Slavery forced admixture upon us and yet we fully acknowledge we are mostly African and are therefore Black. I love your wide nostrils and African features. I love that even when we are lighter, or have lighter hair or lighter eyes, we realize we are Black. There is a strong push politically to dilute our numbers and powers by all of a sudden claiming that our average 1/4 European DNA makes us not really Black. It doesn't make any sense. We are still treated Black and we still must fight for the rights of fellow African-Americans. So yes, almost all Blacks are Mixed in the technical term, but we understand that the actual word Mixed is reserved largely for those with one non-black parent, and even many of them, like Obama, continue to identify as Black, which helps the entire community. I didn't get to hear your entire video, but I'm just thankful that we don't allow these DNA results to all of a sudden cause us to identify as other than Black. Can you imagine how deleterious that would be to our community and a slap in the face to our ancestors, many of whom were 50% African and still considered black slaves?
@LeSweetpea
@LeSweetpea 5 жыл бұрын
We’re not living in the 1920’s. Just because a racist society considered people that were 50% Black, full Black, doesn’t mean that was correct. It wasn’t. It’s okay to be half Black. There is no reason to deny a whole portion of who your are. Obama is HALF Black HALF White. He is both. There is no reason for him to only claim half of himself. He is biracial and mixed. Which is only the truth. You’re basically saying you agree with the 1 drop rule, which I fully disagree with. Being half black is half black. No need to lie and only claim black. No need to be ashamed of being mixed. It’s literally FINE to be 1/4 White and 3/4 Black. 🙂 I don’t think it helps the community do just ignore half your race. Just because someone gets treated as Black doesn’t mean they should just ignore their actual ethnicity. 🙂 I don’t agree at all w/ you lmao

Thanks so much on discussing phenotype vs ancestry. I definitely identify as African American, but I have learned to embrace my mixed ethnicity (I got 69% African and 31% European) and I think it was because of a complex developed in regards to how the world saw me. It wasnt till I started wearing my hair natural (its like yours but brown) that people started to ask me about my ethnicity and only then did I feel comfortable to ket them know I had somse European ancestry. Its like I had to wait for others to acknowledge it before I felt comfortable doing so....and I strongly ageee with you that African Americans are mixed.

You are correct in saying that your average black american has between 70%-80%. The Hodge Twins (hope I spelled that right) got 58% african even though both of their parents are black, and then there are people from South Carolina that get 90% and up fairly regularly, so there’s a lot of variation. I’m glad I got into DNA stuff because I’ve found out so much about my ancestors and immediate family members. Love this stuff! Nice video and you seem cool! Thanks for sharing miss!

correction 65%-85% is the true percentile....if you have above that then you have a recent pure african relative that you may not know about thats in your family. Her 69% african is not biracial mixture its still considered black amongst black americans.

@Lilbit0912 6 жыл бұрын
Sky Reacher No. The average AA DNA with people from South Carolina is 87.9% and they don't have recent african ancestry, so thats really incorrect. The true average when you mix in people that are descendants of free blacks in maryland/east virginia like the slaves from Africa were brought directly to that area and louisiana creoles is 77.8%. Most AAs do not have descendants directly from those areas. They migrated during the Great Migration. If you did, the first thing that would show on your ancestry report is that you have AA DNA from the Mid-Atlantic or Louisiana Creoles like hers did. Unless you have ancestry from the two areas I stated above, it is rare to find AAs above 69.

Kira Dunlap they havent tested every person from the carolinas and the dna test arent really that accurate. Also why do we as people add all of africa dna as a whole when africa is not even a country? regardless of overall percentages when you actually divide the african countries up in her dna none of it is high enough for her to be accepted in each of those countries...that goes for other black americans that I watch take this test as well. Majority of black americans dont even get genetics of being like for example half nigerian....or a quarter nigerian and other parts of africa. Black people are still mixed people even if they are mixed with african countries majority...because yall forget most people in africa are mixed as well. If people traveled like I did to west africa Ive seen people with straight hair or loose curls that americans like to deem as the "mixed look" that they dont show on tv. Even light color eyes. Look up on youtube "west africas sahara sahel region" video and you will see what I mean. so even if a person have "african" dna that ancestor can still have other mixture that ancetry is not advance enough to pick up in those people especially since not alot of africans from the mother land has taken this test from different regions. I guess thats why ancestry cut out the whole overall crap because africans are not the same.Black americans just need to get that through their heads.

While white companies are running around writing articles about African Americans erroneously claiming native American they should do the same for white Americans. I know plenty of white people that probably have African ancestry. The one drop rule was created for people like you, not people like the girl in this video. People like her never had a chance to pass for white and were considered black long before the one drop rule. I'm sick of internet idiots barking on African Americans about the one drop rule while not understanding a goddamn thing about it, rant over.

4:37 - I know I'm almost a year late, but you touched on something I've been trying to tell people, and that is the real danger of telling people that they don't "act black" (or however they word it, as in your example). The obvious implication is that there is a way to "act black" or "act white" or "act [insert culture here]," as though a specific race has a claim on specific behaviors...but more insidious than that is what you pointed out: You are majority black. You have two black parents. You can trace your ancestry back to a myriad of countries in Africa. You are black, and because you are black, you act black just by BEING black--simple as that. And yet, even though you are a perfectly good example of just one of the millions of ways that a black person raised by black people can act, they don't allow you to be black. They've swept you away from their image of black people. So tell me...if they keep rejecting examples of black people that are in opposition to their _image_ of black people (which are often times negative), how will that image EVER be allowed to change? I hope you speak up every time you hear stuff like this. Anyways...sorry for the rant, I know that's not what this video is really about. I've watched a few of your videos, as I've been watching a few of the Tokyo Creative users, and you're a really good vlogger. I enjoy seeing your experiences in Japan! Also, I feel you when it comes to being mixed--I think I'm about the same as you (only with Cherokee mixed in that I can actually trace back to my great-grandmother).

Shynell Vaux Greetings. Those so called “trace regions” from Ancestry DNA can turn out to be significant when testing from other DNA ancestry vendors. As one genetic genealogist have stated all these ancestry DNA results are UNRELIABLE and the only two methods of obtaining accuracy is paying close attention to your close genetic cousin matches and learning where their ancestors are from and looking at your ancestral makeup across all 22 chromosomes via chromosome painting.

You seemed so excited about that “dash”of Irish, but really “could be” embracing your “Huge” African or unique Louisiana creole heritage and speaking those fabulous dialects, like West African Twi or Yoruba ….or Louisiana French!… Sista, you’ve got more Foo Foo, Yams and Gumbo, in your roots, than Sushi or boxty & coddle!… I’m just saying.
