@ZhangK713 жыл бұрын
My theory is that when Country A’s citizens know very little about Country B, that limited knowledge tends to be either mostly positive or mostly negative (when you have limited knowledge, you rarely get a good mix of both). The U.K. is an ally of the U.S., and the unofficial media propaganda has generally instilled good vibes about the U.K. into most Americans who don’t have a nuanced understanding of the country. (Compare that with China, which Americans also have a limited understanding toward, but because of geopolitical issues, the subtle propaganda they’ve been fed about the country is mostly negative.) By contrast, just by the sheer fact that their country isn’t some huge superpower chunk of land that can be easily culturally and geographically isolated from the rest of the world, most British people have a far better understanding of the U.S. and other foreign countries than vice versa.

Since retiring I keep myself busy by volunteering as a Tour Guide both with the National Trust and English Heritage. Then starting last November with walking tours around the city of York. We all love guiding Americans. You just never know what what they are going to ask next. Around 25% are well educated and knowledgeable. It’s the rest that we find entertaining. There must be something missing in the American Education System. Visitors from South America such as Mexico, Brazil and Argentina, seem to have a much better grasp of basic history.
@danielleg31204 жыл бұрын
I think history is all we really know about England (and the UK in general), albeit, not very much. In school, I learned world history in 10th grade. One class, that's it, and England's history is only one puzzle piece in a grand puzzle. The only other place we learn of England's existence is in US history (8th grade for me), with our revolution and independence from the "Red Coats". We don't hear much about it in contemporary times from school, unless the media portrays scenes, such as related to Princess Diana, or what's happening in the Monarchy. The monarchy is fascinating to us because it's a foreign concept, so we love to "learn" what's going on there. We don't know much unless we research on our own. Have series made with the day to day life of people in different parts of the world, and put in on Netflix. Some of us will watch it. Unfortunately, most won't care to, as we've been entrained that the world's problems don't concern us. Not true, I know.
@johnwilletts39844 жыл бұрын
@@danielleg3120 Thank you for your excellent comment. I’ve spent lockdown writing a little local history book entitled ‘Rotherham and the creation of the USA. Rotherham is my home town and began campaigning for American Liberty even before the Revolutionary War started. Please google ‘Victory Arch Parlington Hall Yorkshire’ Wikipedia will explain that the arch was built in 1783 to celebrate American Independence! The Patriot movement actually started in the British Parliament as a branch of the Whig Party. These Whigs wanted radical political reform at home but were opposed by the ruling Tory Party. This conflict between Patriot and Tory spread to the colonies. In America Whigs were in the majority, whilst in Britain Whigs were a minority. But this was changing and British Radical Whigs were gaining ground. In 1781 the Tory government fell apart and Rotherham’s Whig Marquess Rockingham was asked to become Prime Minister. He agreed on two conditions - Economic reform at home and that he be allowed to set America free. This was just after Yorktown, the Tories were simply planning to send more troops. Rockingham stopped the fighting against the colonies, but continued the war against France, Spain and Holland. Tourists are often surprised to see a statue of George Washington in London. I bet for most American’s the political side of the story is something new. But it was American university academic books that I used for research. One of the best books - ‘English Radicals and the American Revolution’ by Colin Bonwick published by the University of North Carolina Press. So for me American Education is not just on two levels, but pushes two very different stories.

“The people are having depression” Wow, we are all depressed. There are no happy people here. PMSL London is expensive because it’s not geared up for Londoners. It’s geared up for tourists that think that it is representative of all of the U.K. London is an awful place and generally only people from there actually like it there. It’s ok for a short visit but my advice to anyone visiting the U.K. is to get out and see the rest of it. Yeah visit Buckingham palace and watch changing of the guard but then go North to the Lake District, go West towards Dorset, Devon and Cornwall. Visit village pubs that are off the beaten track. Get away from the typical tourist places. Visit the castles all over the place. Visit Northern Ireland but if your American don’t pretend you are Irish, we may just laugh at you. There is so much more to the U.K. than London. We have some of the most beautiful beaches in the world if you go up to the north and further up to Scotland.

this reminds me of LA here in the US. people love thinking it’s some glamorous place of the rich and famous. but in reality, there’s not celebrities on every corner or even that much of a high end city. it’s run down , and has a huge population of homeless on skid row. drugs and gangs are dominant and the streets aren’t even kept clean. but LA is thought to be what california and the US is about when realistically there’s so much more to see and visit out here.

@@ukisbeggar8462 Is it the legacy of the East India company and the mass starvations that occurred which inspires your hatred? In that regard, I believe our families could have a shared past, but... The people who committed these atrocities as well as the people that carried memories of them are all long dead. With no one to receive just punishment, it seems unfair to dish it out to generations of people who have no connection to them.

Visited Shelby in NC in 1991 with work (PPG glass fibre division) and the American's loved our Northern English accent. Had a great 2 weeks there, everyone was friendly, Some black guy's, celebrating friends returning from 1st Gulf war, invited us to a party in their motel room and they were cool with us...🙌

These people seem lovely and fairly clued up on things here, it warms my heart that the anti-british mantra amongst the vast majority of Americans is gone. We have nothing but love and respect for our cousins and allies across the pond, so it puts a smile on my face when I hear that they have some nice things to say. Much love to our friends across the Atlantic 🇬🇧❤️🙏

I'm American but I always enjoy learning about and making friends with other cultures, Britain being one of them! (I quite enjoy British humor, history and accents especially haha.) I know there are some negative things about the US & Britain both, but it's lovely when we can both look past those and appreciate the good in each other. Best of wishes to you from an American friend. ✨🇺🇲🇬🇧

I have been a long-time anglophile for most of my 55 years, but I have to confess that repeated experience in comment sections on KZbin has really turned me off. It seems like the majority of reactions from Brits to Americans is nasty, condescending and filled with anti-American stereotypes. I am seeing this far, far too often for it to be random or sample error. It's pretty pervasive. So, frankly, I will really think twice about ever going to the UK again.
