I am a single mom of a 15 year old boy who lifts weights, plays football and is a junior firefighter (he EATS a lot) I budget $100a month because that's all I have left after bills. I work 58 hours a week and still cook everything from scratch. Sunday is my only day off and it's my baking day, everything we need for the week. I do not spend $100 for the month ,usually it's 50-60 but I religiously save the excess. That is how I was able to have the money to stock up on meat by the case when it's on sale and just this week I went to the family dollar that is going out of business and spent $200 stocking up on foil, trash bags, shampoo, dish soap, laundry soap, etc. I won't have to buy any of that for at least a year.

I'm a psychotherapist with chronic health symptoms and chronic pain. The following is the nerd in me coming out...snacking raises dopamine, which temporarily lowers pain. Comfort is a valid need, but substitute something healthy instead of snacking. Get up and walk one minute every hour. Get out in nature even if it's sitting in a chair outside. Use soft sheets and blankets. Take a hot bath, etc. Do slow breathing and muscle relaxation. These won't raise dopamine, but they are all calming, and they can lower pain. Magnesium is also a natural muscle relaxer.

I recently did a challenge with my daughters (age 8 & 12) where they had $100 to spend on groceries for our family of 4 for a week. I only let them use the milk, eggs , flour spices etc that we always have. They did it. Including meat, etc. We live in Western NY and things aren't necessarily cheap here.

There are so many meals you can make, even healthy ones, just from canned goods. Simple and easy.2 cans of beef stew from the dollar store, put into a baking dish and make instant Bisquit mix, also from dollar store. drop on top the beef stew or add more water and pour, Stick in oven and bake. Or just make a packet or two of instant mash potatoes and heat stew up and pour on top of the potatoes. You can also use hearty soup instead of stew. Maybe put together meal packets of things into complete meal sections in your cupboard, so all you have to do is grab a meal kit and make it, when you're tired. No thinking needed.

Gluten Free Pizza toast is my go to. I buy pizza sauce, pepperoni and shredded "mozzarella" at the dollar tree. Toast the bread then add the sauce, cheese and pepperoni and stick it under the broiler. If I'm feeling fancy i might sprinkle italian seasoning on top. Super quick, tasty and cheap.

My bf & I spend about $100 a month at the grocery store & then we'll buy other foods from time to time at Dollar Tree or other stores like that. No more than $200 a month for the 2 of us, on the high side. Our grocery store gives us points to shop there & that helps us to save on gas, but we have to use there gas station. We'll buy tp at our grocery store, b/c it's not any cheaper at Walmart. We also buy toothpaste at the grocery store, when they have it on sale, which is quite frequently. I stopped buying it, since my bf said we'll ever get through all this. I only buy cleaning supplies at the grocery store when they are in the clearance area at a good price. I get a lot of mine at Dollar Tree or a store like that. I'll splurge on stain remover & get that at a hardware store. I found last week 16oz strawberries for .99 cents. We use coupons when we can. We got Burger King last night & it cost us before tax $6.99, for 2. If we didn't use a coupon it would have cost us $16 something. We got 2 chicken sandwiches & 2 medium fries. We took it home & saved buy drinking what we have here. We only eat out if we see a good deal or have coupons or someone's given us a gift card. We don't have any good thrift stores around us, mainly Goodwill.

My go to is either carne asada tacos, or spaghetti. I buy the taco meat when it's on sale at our local Mexican market. For spaghetti, I dig out my 20 quart pot, and make enough spaghetti sauce to freeze for several months worth of meals. I just freeze it in ziplock bags, flat on cookie sheets, with paper in between the bags, so the bags don't stick together when they freeze. Both of those meals take about 10 minutes of work on the night we eat them. I also like to dice and freeze onions and celery for stews. It saves money, because I can buy on sale, and time. I don't have a lot of energy, and meals come together faster.

It does help that I dog housesit so that helps greatly in cutting down on grocery costs since people hiring me either buy me groceries or say help yourself to anything. Also do my laundry there so save on laundry soap plus tp. Good savings for me since am on Disability @age 54 so many people complain about the prices yet yes they are buying non essential items like ppr towels; or alot of the unnecessary expensive cleaners, alcohol, juice, sparkling waters, sweet treats, chips(junk food), expensive yogurt, out of season fruits, prepackaged processed food so unnecessary!!! I will always make room in the grocery budget if I find good clearance deals...even if it means scratching half the planned meals and switching to pb&j that week. My best finds were spiral sliced ham marked from $2.49/lb to $0.49/lb...I bought 10 and froze them. Last week I found GF breadcrumbs for $0.39 per bag, originally $3.99. I bought all 12 bags. Stocking up on clearance is by far the best way to save on groceries.

I work at Kroger and the Strawberries have been on sale for $1.99 for a long time here in the Naahville area. Blueberries have been on sale off and on too. So buying greenhouse grown out of the "outdoor" season can be affordable. They may not be as nutritional as those grown in the soil. Then again they may be if less pesticides are used.

Neither my roommate nor I own a car. We rent a SUV every 3 months and go on a "big shop" where we hit Costco, Target, Kroger, an organic produce place, the Hispanic or Asian Market (once or twice a year) Depending on sales available at the time, we may also hit up another supermarket. If we hit all of these stores, we drive around 15 miles or less. We last went Jan. 27th and spent slightly less than $850 for food, toiletries, paper products, cleaning supplies and dog food. Since then we have spent slightly less than $250 for fresh produce, eggs and other dairy products. Our next target shop will be May 1 when the dog needs to go to the vet for shots. We should not have to buy anything else save eggs and milk until then.

It is hard to tell. We stock the larder then shop it with only fill-in or treat shops. When we are lucky, we super stock when we find great deals like $1 and $2 per pound butter, 3/$1 15oz cans of Hunt's stewed tomatoes, $1.99/ 30 0z Hientz mayo, $4.99/ 25.1 ozcoffee, etc.. We tend to adjust the meal plan to correlate to our great deals and the larder. Some larder items we know we will not be replenishing (unless we find another great deal) and others will be replentished and used on a much smaller scale.

I also tell others that a bowl of cereal is a perfectly acceptable dinner, once in a while. Or even a banana split for dinner once in a while. I try to make French bread pizzas at least once or twice a month using Walmart's French bread, spaghetti sauce, maybe pepperoni, crumbled bacon and mozzarella cheese. And I can make it, bake it, and probably eat it in less time than ordering one. I have more money that I have to spend each month due to my Medicare food allowance. So., I can't truthfully answer that yes. I blend convenience foods/frozen foods with fresh and having to cook. I can handle it financially, and it seems to make sense for me. And there's a lot that I make and cook for myself that I don't feel bad about what I don't make. Every time you offer the e-book free for volume 1, I so hope that the people in other countries take advantage of it. The cost to print the book is probable the equivalent of having it shipped, if shipping were possible. They could omit printing the pictures and print on the back of a page. I am still using free shampoo/conditioner that I brought with me from NJ 6 1/2 years ago when I moved. I am getting close. I am totally stocked up on toothpaste (I use 1 tube every 3 1/2 months) and change my toothbrush every 3 months. My Medicare Advantage Plan gives me $100 monthly for Over the Counter items that are bought from a catalog. I am stocked.

We, like you, stock up when things are on sale. We don't cook to the cookbooks, we plan our meals based on what we have on hand, looking for recipes that use the ingredients we have on hand. Often we substitute recipe items for what we do have on hand, not necessarily what a recipe calls for. It didn't happen overnight. We worked a little at a time to build our pantry and ate very frugally for years before we reached our now comfort zone that allows us the freedom in our budget to take advantage of stock up sales. We now actually have surplus to share and still enjoy good quality food. Recently we have a had some times that forced us to eat 'out'. We nearly choked on our food, knowing what it was costing for one meal! We will look for in-store delis and get a quick snack or even a hot bar meal for a small fraction of restaurant eating costs. Our garden is also a hobby as well as a God sent provision we are willing to work for. Our pantry is always full thanks to our garden harvests. Even if it isn't always what we "want"...it fills a hollow spot and we know how it was grown and prepared. Thank you for sharing your tips with us. Even these old dogs can always learn new tricks.

The government lives off of budgets. IMO that is the biggest mistake of government. When they can't meet budget they ask for more or they waste their budget at the 11th hour so they can ask for more. The governement should have a bottom line like the rest of us. So in effect the graph you show says the average budget for a family. Is the government going to fill that gap it you run over budget? THE ANSWER IS NO. What a joke:)

How do you factor in the cost of, for instance, meat and other items when you find them way on sale and you buy very large quantities of those, to your monthly grocery amount you say you spend? Do you then not buy other items that month?

As I woman who did intermittent fasting and keto, I'd never suggest it. I had extreme gut and hormones probs after it. All my medical and naturopathy people I saw Saud they see it hugely in women. Our bodies aren't made for fasting due to out hormones. It took 3 years to heal my gut so I could eat most foods again. But there are some foods I can't eat still and it's been 4 years. Just eat well. 😊 and...I know lots of women with the same probs.

$900+ is insanity, I'm single and I spend around $95 - $120. I should add that I by necessity have groceries delivered due a stroke years ago and a recent seizure and I no longer drive or have a vehicle. T he $95 - $120 includes a $9.95 deliver charge plus tip, so the grocery bill is somewhat reduced.

The car I have now is 30 yrs old. I only pay cash. Surprisingly older cars seem to run better for me and I have been told 2 different tow truck drivers that 95% of the cars they tow are new cars.

I looked at McCain's frozen potatoes products today and I couldn't believe how much money they were they were around $6 a bag!!!! I don't buy those but it was insane how much more they are now. I walked past and the sale price was 4.99 I think and it used to be 2 for 5 as a good sale price on those. I think sometimes 2 for 4. I was like nope definitely not. 😮 It is painful I don't get how people do that all the time. And we spend too much on groceries still but it is really insane lately how much things have gone up. 😢

If you’re spending 500-600 you’re at Costco or somewhere else with pre prepared foods. I don’t spend that much even on Kroger and smart and final budget and I do buy foil or etc at those stores.. yeah I’m in LA. I spend like 300-400 as a family of 4 and including General Merch peace

$1300 for the monthly "thrifty" plan for my family of 4 adults and a 6 yr old. We probably spend that much but it includes all household items, sometimes clothing or non food (Walmart or Costco). Even counting that I include all those other items, I don't feel like I pick "thrifty" foods at all!
