What they don't say is that British has high tech communication spy equipment that tap mobile and even landline communications, and the Kenyan leaders are not excluded. Everybody knows that citing training as the reason of deploying in Kenya is total BS. Summer Scotland has conditions quite similar to Nanyuki's.

Why do I have a problem with the introductory part of this video? Long gone are the days when negative publicity would attract viewers. Everyone knows that Kenya is much better than what this journalist is trying to spin in the introduction of this video. We know we are poor, but it is not poverty everywhere. There are places here that are more developed that some parts of Europe. Be objective.

all those internet warriors who think they know everything are quick to criticize the presence of British troops in kenya without looking at the benefits, a number of kenyans are employed as support staff to the uk troops, kenyan troops also benefit from joint training sessions, the local economy also benefits because of the purchases of products, as for those who ask whether kenya can have a base in the uk the answer we simply cannot afford it, we already struggle to maintain our high commission in london.

We pay the Kenyan government for use of the land that we train on. We pay locals to help us with the training exercises, create jobs for locals who work on our bases and our troops go out and spend money in Nanyuki which helps the small businesses such as Curio shops, bars and restaurants. We also run projects where we go to local schools in small villages and build them new furniture and equipment. All those who are posting absolute nonsense saying the British are bad for Kenya are imbeciles. 1) The Kenyan government have FULL CONTROL over our presence in Kenya. 2) We train your Army and help them to fight Al-Shaabab who commit terrorist attacks on your soil. 2) We pay to lease the land and give back to the local villages and communities additionally. 3) We are not here to colonise you. You references to the old-Britain's colonial days do not justify your unfounded views on this! So many Kenyan's and Africans on this thread are making very stupid comments. You need to educate yourself instead of believing baseless HYPE!

I hate them with a passion, they brutally killed my grandfather injured my grandmother during the struggle for our country independent. My grandfather was a Mau Mau freedom fighter. There is no cordial relationship Kenyan people has with British especially Mau Mau descendant. Still to date Mau Mau descendant are still struggling many don't have even a piece of land they can call home. They only have relationship with Kenyattas, Odingas and few individuals. Come 2022 election it will be a new dawn for majority Kenyans who are still suffering. I urge human rights our both houses Senate and Parliament to revisit this matter urgently. Be the voice of voiceless. They should leave our country immediately. They should train in their own country. Can they allow Kenyan troops to train in their country? Sorry for those who thinks Kenya is still in 1900 to early 1940s. This has truly been evident during election years. The struggle continue Kenyan are educated and well educated.

I had uncles who fought on both sides of Mau Mau. They were not freedom fighters, but terrorists, who slaughtered hundreds of thousands of their own people. If you don't have land, take it up with your political leaders, like the Kenyatta and Moi families, they seem to have quite a bit. I write this in 2024, and what did your 2022 elections bring eh???

A few of my schoolmates from Kenya know some fellow students who went on to join BATUK. UK military training teams are some of the very best out there, I saw their professionalism first-hand when I was in South Africa, where the organization that employed me (ACCORD) had a very close working relationship with the then British Military Advisory Training Team (BMATT), based in Zimbabwe at the time, and which later established training programs in South Africa. It was always a pleasure working with BMATT as part of ACCORD's effort to build capacity for Southern African peacekeeping troops. It was a pity when they decided to close their mission in Zimbabwe after things got out of hand down there. At ACCORD, we also had close working ties with the larger UK mission, including their defense advisors who were always very helpful and ready to meet on very short notice. However, given my memorable moments working with BMATT, I must say that I am a little disappointed about aspects of this video--informative as it is. First off, it would have been nice to see what the UK gets out of BATUK. Kenya has given them a rare opportunity to train freely in realistic conditions to prepare their forces for deployment to Afghanistan and other parts of the Middle East. The training probably helps save the lives of those troops and Kenya is pretty much the only location outside the UK where they get to train on such a scale and with such frequency. It's not just about creating economic opportunities for Kenyans--the UK benefits greatly as well. Secondly, I couldn't help but notice how the Commander BPSTA, Colonel Chippy Minton, describes the Secretary's visit to Africa (see 2:29). He called it "an adventure." Now that is the sort of stereotype that Africa's foreign military partners need to inoculate themselves against. The notion of Africa as some exotic place of "adventure" goes back to old caricatures of the continent that should not be entertained in this day and age. What Africans want (and deserve) is genuine partnership where learning goes in both directions. Our friends in BATUK, which continues to have my respect and admiration, surely understand that and should include it in the training of their officers and men and women.

Some of the first British Army AID cases came from soldiers having sex with the local woman in Kenya, i was based in Berlin at the time (1986/87) and i remember having to go with 100s of others for a talk on AIDs - they army policy was that they did not test for AIDs and have anything to do with anyone catching it. The AID cases the army had found was through unrelated illness these soldiers had. Some of these cases were soldiers from the Devon & Dorset Regiment, who had been training in Kenya and were based in Berlin at the time. I remember when the Black Watch came to Berlin, i was delivering materials to their camp for weeks. They all went off for a month training, and their wives went out on the town, guess who they were getting of with, lads from the Devon & Dorset. If we meet any of the Scottish lasses we would ask them if they had met any lads from the D&Ds if they had, and just to be safe, we would clear off.

This #BATUK British Army Training Unit in Kenya, should not have another extension of its mandate. As our beloved President Kibaki had intended to kick them out in his first term in 2005, it is high time we revisited our relationship with the UK. Besides providing training grounds for their troops in Laikipia, the UK is no longer a strategic partner to Kenya In any other sphere! We need to rethink our association and give China the pre eminent preference as they have as well willingly done with us economically since 2003. It's noteworthy that Kenya started showing growth and real development by looking east. We need to complete the cycle in every other sphere including our security partnerships and guarantees. The UK does not deserve that role anymore. Let us co opt Israelis, Chinese, Russia and Other emerging powers with equal economic benefits! Time to kick out the Brits. No hard feelings. Just a reality check Join me @Kagodenis on twitter. Keep the conversation alive. And can the reporter show our Chinese funded and built roads, rails and cities. We are not a jungle!

Hopefully not catching AIDS - First cases of reported AIDS in the British army were from a regiment who had returned back from training in Kenya (this was in the early 80s) At the time the Army did not actively check for AIDS, but found cases diagnosing other health issues form some soldiers. The Regiment in question had just arrived in Berlin (Mid 80s) so the soldiers who contracted AIDS had it for around 2 to 3 years, before being diagnosed. I was based in Berlin at the time, and remember everyone had to be briefed at our BMS. In brief - Sex is cheap in Kenya and if you catch AIDS, the Army will not look after you. The majority of cases were married men. One of my medic mates told me at the time, there were a reported 120 odd cases of personnel catching AIDS which the MOD kept quite, not all from this Regiment though.

@@carthodblade8438 I am positive that factors were considered before entering into such agreements. For example, 20,000+ high skilled professionals like nurses, doctors, and hospitality sector staff are set to get high paying jobs in the UK. Second, I have seen UK funding and providing advanced education like masters and PHD to hundreds of Kenyans each year in reputable British Universities. I am not sure if all these are part of the BATUK deal but but they serve as a good gesture for a mutually beneficial relationship between the two countries.

David Houseman; quite - my point is that the British have been in Kenya for many years doing essentially the same job. The poster appears to think that 'we' are doing something new. Quite the opposite.

You forget the UK begged to have the troops continue training in Kenya during the Kibaki adminstration! The people wanted them out. Thank the hospitality of the Kenyan people that we still allow British troops to continue training in Kenya. There is no training grounds in the UK or so I understand. The training in the Defence college Karen for regional African Stand by Force (Eastern section) is a Kenyan led initiative to help her neighbouring countries so portraying it as British led is greatly misleading.

And about British army in Kenya mmm what’s the fuss about? Why are Kenyans all over the world working and doing business? Maybe they should come home to 😀This stupid mentality will never work. We should be talking about the benefits we get as Kenyans not just blankets condemnation and criticism.
