1. Emotional reasoning. When you feel something so intensely ,so you think it might be true. 2. Disqualifying the positive. Focusing only on the small negative aspects. 3. Mind reading. Making assumptions without enough evidence. 4. All or nothing thinking. Beautiful or hideous. Black or white. Nothing in between. 5.Catastrophizing. Imagining the worst explanations or outcomes.

Lovely Video! Sorry for the intrusion, I would love your opinion. Have you considered - Millawdon Varied Nights Trick (do a google search)? It is a good one of a kind guide for learning intimate questions to make your relationship stronger without the normal expense. Ive heard some super things about it and my cooworker after a lifetime of fighting got cool results with it.

2. It could quite literally all be positive but your brain will want you to constantly prove it over and over.

I took a class in federal prison called Criminal Behavior....it was based on irrational thought processes. It's actually quite amazing the psychology behind this stuff. I realized it's something everyone does...but you can't stop them...best to not even point them out. It's best to learn and understand them Yourself...so you can catch Yourself doing it...and stop it. I've tried explaining these irrational thought processes to others and it usually doesn't end well. I was talking to another inmate one day about why some people don't take it well when being told about their own irrational thoughts. He told me "Sometimes you can only clean up the trash on your side of the fence"

What he said was in the Bible Matthew 7:3-5 NIV “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye. 💯

It's important to notice that these cognitive distortions conflict with people's wants/needs/motivations/fears. Hence the emotional reaction. If the distortion was about something irrelevant to a person they would not care. Perhaps distortions form because of a hypersensitivity to a need or fear.

@@jinkieez If I understand you correctly, it's your need/demand to secure/attain that which you love that keeps your brain looking for certainty of never loosing it. My mind does similar things. The solution is to realize that demanding certainty is an unrealistic expectation.

Add the 'Zero Sum Gain' fallacy: Someone compliments my kid on being so beautiful so that must mean they don't think I am beautiful or my sister got invited to go to the beach with one of her friends (who I don't even know) but nobody invited me to go anywhere so that must mean nobody wants my company.

I have been trying to figure out what it was for so long and know I can address it to my therapist. Thank you!

It's really hard for me sometime to see a clear difference between emotional reasoning and fortune telling. In the former case, you feel something and make a prediction. In the latter case, you see something, have an emotional reaction, then make a prediction. It seems to me the only difference is that fortune telling involves an empirical observation.

This is informative and helps you think positive. Thanks I have a query. We come across people who break our trust easily and after that point, we start depending upon our gut feelings to avoid being hurt or fooled again. Some people are not honest with you and fake friend you, and ignore you when you need them, later they make excuses about being busy. So there are certain kinds of lessons that make us too over analytical for the fear of being a victim again. How different is this defence mechanism of going by your gut feelings against cognitive distortions? Pls explain. Thanks :)

I think I have to take lots of CBT to get my life together. I'm very very bad at academia, I put things off all the time, to a point where it has become a problem where I'm starting to get Fs on midterms. I get two Fs and 2 As on midterms. Those I got an A on I studied for a little bit weeks prior and had to buckle-up and study for the days coming coming to the exam. But other courses I would neglect (even if I have like 3-4 days for a midterm, but since I haven't studied for it a weeks prior, then I will not get an A, and most likely I might fail, and the amount of work I need to put to get an A is very high) So I procrastinate and feel guilty about procrastinating and not studying and the cycle will go on untill the day before the exam where I would open the material and read I realize that all of those thoughts and fears were wrong. But the problem is that it happens all the time, and I feel like my head is messed up...
