Protogen fursuits are a very unique species in the fandom. I have yet to see a protogen in real life, but would still love to see one someday. There should be more protogens in the fandom, personally I think they're hecking cool! And as always, great video! Much love!

This crimson delight is stunned by the quality of this video! ;3 Electronic heads btw can be pretty cheap if you make your own. My head costed about 300-400 dollars and a big part of that was shipping costs for materials :P

In all honesty, you don't actually need the vacuum faceplate for your heads. Shaping aluminum or some other metal is most likely cheaper, especially if you're seeing from a gopro on your neck connected to a vr headset/phone. (I'm planning on doing this soon, with the lights actually being under a bunch of holes in my helmet, allowing me to see without a camera.)

I just saw these today for the first time, and I'm hooked. I've been a lurking furry for years, but have never taken that leap to make a fursuit. Although I'd likely start with a partial suit (head, hands, and feet), making one of these heads is a maker's dream come true. It not only involves plenty of skills to learn, but it's an excuse to build a vaccuforner and to get a bigger 3d printer. Luckily, I'm a professional software developer and electronics hobbyist, so the techy parts wouldn't be bad. It was either going to be this, or a Deadmau5 helmet.

Ive done 2 Protogen to this day, and im on the making of the third one. Something to understand is that the worst is the visor, vaccum forming is extremly hard, i do it with a barbecue but still there is a lot of fail even with experience. An usefull advise, make your Protogen in ABS or at least PETG filament, because PLA deform at only 60°C (hot car can go to 70 pretty easly)

Sentient toasters....I laughed way too hard at this. While I am not a furry, I really do appreciate the love and dedication that goes into making something as complex as a fur suit, and especially when you add (as AvE would say) angry pixies and electronicals to them. Murder Drones, episode 1 made a reference to Protogens. There is a line near the end where one of the murder drones says to the main character "...for a barely sentient toaster." I so did not even make the connection until just now. Actually, the Primagens BUILT the Protogens. Primagens needed workers and thus designed Protogens. The Protogens rebelled against their creators. FYI, it is pronounced "Prime Uh Jen", not "Prim Uh Jen". In other words, they came FIRST, as in Primary species. 3d printing the the visor IS possible. It just requires transparent filament. You don't actually need to vacu-form the visor. You would need a Raspberry Pi in order to run a full-head LED display like that. The reason Protogens are rare is due to the closed nature of the species.

late response, but a couple things: 1. you can't 3D print the visor with transparent filament, because it doesn't make an optically clear end result. it would be translucent and you wouldn't actually be able to see through it and have any meaningful use of your vision. 2. you don't need a Pi, in fact that's a terrible choice for running anything that requires a fast response time or that needs to be portable, since the GPIO pins are slow, it has to run all of Linux (which means you have to properly start it up/shut it down), everything lives on an SD card (slow and unreliable), and it sucks down battery like no tomorrow. a Cortex M4-based microcontroller or a Teensy 4 would be a much, much better choice.

I’m probably going to vacuum form it (you can build your own vacuum forming equipment at home!) but I’ve also had a lot of fun just learning about the protogen fandom and how protogens make their awesome suits! :D

This video is amazing!! I've been excited to see you cover protogens for a while, especially after your electronic fursuit tail video! But since you mentioned it, for a microcontroller I use the Teensy 4.0 from PJRC (which can be programmed like an Arduino) and for power currently, I use lithium-polymer battery packs but will be switching that out for something... less-flammable like a lithium-ion battery pack lol

Personaly I love the protogens, there are smaller protogen fursuit makers but it is true its not something easily done. Arkoss is an Argentinian protogen fursuit maker that on a con explained the complicated process it was to make his protogen, the visors themselves is a huge roadblock that is pretty complicated to figure it out which is why it is not commonly available and often costly

Im 14 and i made my own "partial" lol. I had the foam to do so i just convinced my dad to get me the fur and a head band for the ears. It doesn't look the presttiest for Llama toes but i still can do stuff lol. I made my own hands and tail and ears for my Llama fursona, i did around Halloween and said its just a costume lol. So all i do is wear clothes for my fursona then just put the paws and tail on and ears and im all set now for a "partial" lol

Vacuum formers expensive? Sure, if you buy a commercial model. But they are among the cheapest and easiest modeling tools to make. All you need is a frame, a box with a bunch of air holes, and a shop vac. There are lots of KZbin videos that tell you how to build one.
