Going used is THE biggest recommendation I can give to a beginner. Lots of people getting into photography will get into a camera store, buy something for around a thousand bucks, play with it for a couple of months, get bored, let the camera on a shelf for 6 months and then sell it at a discounted price. That's how we get so many entry level cameras on the used market so quickly, not even a year after their release. Personally, I have never really used a camera that was brand new. My last brand new camera was my dad's Nikon D60 back in 2009. I started off with a used Fujifilm X-T1, then X-T2 and those cameras, if you can find them at a good price are really staples of what used cameras should be : in the case of the X-T2 you get a well built camera that actually feels great, has a great EVF, great back screen, tons of controls (which I should add, the Fujifilm vintage dials are PERFECT to learn photography when you don't have any knowledge of exposure etc, they really allow you to know what you're changing, see the effects of that) but they also have great features you generally don't see in lower end bodies : weather sealing, full magnesium alloy body (meaning it you can use it and not baby it, a lot of beginners end up not using their camera because they don't know how reliant it is and if they should use it or not, by fear of breaking it or destroying it if there's like a little rain outside or stuff like that). They also have still up to date sensors, the 24MP in the X-T2 is still absle to deliver image that are on par with current top of the line APS-C cameras in 2024. And lastly, in the case of teh X-T2, it's a camera that has decent looking video, decently accurate autofocus and has double card slots : beyond being just a beginer friendly camera it's a camera that has all the right things to allow somoene to grow into, leanr to use correctly and in the end it could be a profesionnal tool if you end up taking jobs with it. And what, it coest about the same as a brand new Canon R100? Has better image quality and better video to boot? Hard to justify something else that would be priced similarly on the brand new market. And the X-T2 is not a lonely example : for a similar amount of money you can get an Olympus E-M1 mark II, for about half that you can get a full frame Nikon D610 and for half that again you can get a camera like a D7000 or D7100 that could get you started really quickly and give you most of what you need right away, without spending thousands to make a complete kit. A friend of mine moved out and had to sell his camera to finance the move. Now he has settled down a little bit and wanted to pick up a "serious" camera again. He picked up a Nikon D7000 for €159 on MPB, paired it with an old 50mm f/1.8D and is very happy with it, compared to the price he paid for it. And honestly? I can't tell much of a difference between the pictures he took with that D7000 and the pictures he took with his previous camera (which was a Sony A7C)

Bravo! This is much better advice than the three amigos manage - factual, all about usage and without all the obvious and contradictory bias those folks portray. If you want to find a camera, read the above, try a few different brands in a store to find what works for you and then buy used.

Nikons new entry camera is a great example in how decent sensors + updated software makes almost anything possible. It's kinda how crazy companies won't update their previous cameras.
@ryanbrown17893 күн бұрын
I think one of the bigger limitation to older cameras is the processing power. But the sensors do limit capabilities. Because of the ancient sensor in the z50ii you won’t get AF performance like cameras with faster sensors regardless of processing power. But I’ve been saying for years that they could’ve just stuck the expeed 7 in the existing Z6ii and it would’ve been a STELLAR camera. And they could’ve done it two years ago and saved them a lot of trouble lol.
@Teslien3 күн бұрын
@ryanbrown1789 It's software and the read write speeds. CPUs job is to command other components but the software design can hinder the operations with bloat code. The worse it'll do, is consume more battery and have longer buffer times. A better CPU will only help in making faster decision making. Precaputure might need a bigger cache to hold the temp data. Who cares about AF speeds if it's not marketed as AF. That's like asking for a supercar performance out of a cheap car. A possibility with a good mechanic. There's been cases where they hooked cameras onto drones as remote missiles. It now costs money to have good AF but good software designers are arguably more expensive since a good programmer can create more opportunity out of "tech junk"
@salami9919 сағат бұрын
contrast, the z6 iii was too little to late and high price for what it is relative to other cams. A used r5 is 1800 and a better body in every way. minus the Nikor line
@Teslien18 сағат бұрын
@@salami99 you're using sentiment analysis with the pricing of used. I was discussing that the cameras are more than capable of what's marketed thru modifying built in camera software. It doesn't really matter which camera, it's the notion that all the camera software can be modified BUT these camera brands purposely gatekeep software design with more money. Mirrorless brought the wysiwyg design therefore alot is technically possible. Hook any camera up to streaming production software and lo n behold, you can get yourself an updated camera at the expense of computer power.

I think my thing about entry level cameras is that a lot of used pro cameras go for around the same price now. Panasonic s5 and Gh6, Sony A7 III/R III, Nikon Z6 II and Z5, fuji x-t4, canon r7… the list goes on. Why would I pay $900 for an entry level camera when I can spend MAYBE a small premium and, yeah I’m buying used, but get just a way better tool that will probably last me longer into my development as a professional? I think manufacturers have yet to put forth a compelling enough entry level camera to justify that investment over a used pro body.

The Canon R10 ist pretty good for beginners. Not a fan of the R50 and the R100 though. The R10 offers good haptics, a nice grip, an easy to understand menu and good specs. I can also recommend used and older Fuji cameras for beginners - the X-T30 is great, or the S10. Even an X-T20 offers better image quality than most phones and is very cheap nowadays.
@Bayonet18095 күн бұрын
When I was in Japan last year I held every camera at one of those big stores that have display models freely available to try, and the R10 was by far the most comfortable camera to hold. I had thought the Fujifilm X-S20 might be good, but it was far too angular, even with the big grip. The R6II, along with the Nikon Z8 were also good, but are more heavy, so less ideal.

I just had to play along. Entry level interchangeable lens cameras I've had: Sony NEX-5n, Pentax K-01, Olympus E-P2, Fuji X-E1, Nikon D3000, Canon 50D. I took the most photos with the Fuji. The Sony and Pentax were gone pretty quickly. The Nikon and Canon got upgraded to full frame before too long. The Olympus always frustrated me - not very shallow DoF and diffraction starting at like f/6.3 so very limited aperture range.

UPDATE Nov 7 16:43: Regarding Camcorders, they are still used by reporting teams elsewhere in the world. No they are not used as much as they used to be, but about 3 - 5 years ago I saw a few even in Toronto for news conferences. If I were covering a news conference by myself, I would probably still use a camcorder. Specifically, I have a Sony AX53 which has a good zoom range and fairly good optics and sound. I might take a camera mounted microphone (a "shotgun" mic is a specific type of mic if you are being pedantic). I would also have a mirror-less body and one or two lenses in a bag, and a monopod. But mostly, I would use the camcorder on the monopod. Lighting is not a problem in a real press conference. The TV crews always bring truckloads of lighting.

Always go used for entry level stuff. People throw this out for incredible prices, sometimes because they don’t even know how much it is worth. For stills, get an old DSLR if you don’t care about size and weight. A Canon 5D Mk2 is like 200 bucks, you can get upper mid range APSC stuff like the Nikon D7200 for 400 to get into wildlife/birding for less than 1000 bucks. M43 may sound compelling but an Olympus om1 mk2 plus 300mm will set you back more and be just slightly lighter and smaller.

It’s kind of disappointing to me that LUMIX and OM System don’t really have a front runner for a good entry level camera. They have almost two decades of mirrorless camera experience against the main competitors but they don’t produce an interesting entry level camera any more. The EPL and GX series should really be under cutting the X100 in terms of simplicity with an analog athletic in my opinion.

OM-5 phenomenal entry level camera

Good to see Jordan rocking a movember moustache, or perhaps it is a homage to adult actors from the 80s?

You guys need to watch some Markus Pix camcorder videos.

Better than that show can be only that gorgeous Jordan's mustache :) But all together is atomic explosion)

Well, it depends on the idea of "entry level"... if by that you mean "sacrificing some features to get to a certain price point, while sticking necessarly to the new market", then all right. Otherwise, if you just take into consideration the same price level as per previous sentence (or even a lower threshold, tbh), then you open up the used market. And boy oh boy... you can get incredibily high quality cameras, much better than the ones discussed in the video. Take the Nikon Z6: found one for €600 one month ago, with over 1.5 years of warranty left. Attach to it a Nikkor Z 24-70 f/4 (€350, on MPB) and with less than 1K you bring home TONS of quality for less than the requested price for these "entry level cameras"

What camera and lens are you using for this podcast?
@PetaPixel5 күн бұрын
It varies for all three of us. Chris uses a Sony a7R V, Jordan uses a Lumix S5 IIX, and I use a Canon EOS R. Not sure what lenses the guys are using, but I'm using the 24-105mm f/4L. -Jaron

@@PetaPixel why is your framerate always so jerky while Chris and Jordan look fine?
@alen29375 күн бұрын
I do not like closed ecosystems like apple. I also do not like windows. I pretty much run Arch in all my pcs, which give me tons of power and battery life as well. Not for all, but totally understand Chris. By the way, that is an Awesome Gundam. I once dreamed with you guys, but we were just at a sony convention and I went and said Hi. You also answered back, so... cool!

Panasonic's abandonment of affordable M4/3 cameras (GX series) and 1" sensor point and shoots is leading it down the path to irrelevance. Its full frame cameras are far too big, heavy and expensive, and its M4/3 stuff is too large, video-centric and expensive to get people into Panasonic.

The 15-45mm Fuji is just an extra $100. Get that and a prime or two. Compact easy to throw on if you need something other than 23mm. No brainer.

The guy looking to replace his Nikon F2 for travel purposes should look into a Nikkormat or older Olympus/Pentax if he wants to stick to SLR. Otherwise, maybe look into Canon LTM rangefinders like the older Canon II and III.

Yeah, I also didn't understand why Chris said he won't use M43 for landscape. I am just getting into the system for it's affordable first party lenses.

What does Petapixel think of Fuji's AF? Online reviewers seem to be knocking SO MUCH on it, but why is Petapixel always recommending the Fuji experience?
@niccollsvideo4 күн бұрын
I think it comes down to the idea that all the cameras autofocus well enough and in most situations will function just fine. Also Fujifilm tend to have perfectly good AF for photos but it is annoying if during video the af keeps drifting to the background. This is something which they still need to improve. But the experience of using one is still enjoyable for sure.

The cheapest camera you could have lived with would be the Canon R8. But would rather go one step up to Sony A7r3 or Panasonic S1R or just the Canon R5…Unless I could afford the Z8 or the R5 II.
