Saw the Brooks Launch in your thumbnail. I have the GTS version in my rotation, and also use it in the gym. It’s an excellent shoe when you need firm stability, for weightlifting, lunges, farmers walks, sleds, squatting. Also great in the rower. 😊

Yup...thats the impression I got form the HYROX and gym communities on it. I also tried it on (non GTS) recently to confirm and can see why it's so popular for this use cases. Great value in a very capable shoe.

I was living in Santa Cruz when Glassman started CrossFit in the early 2000s. It blew up from there. When I first heard about Hyrox, I also thought it was hybrid of CrossFit. It's slowly taking off in the States, at least here on the left coast.

I am VERY much not the athlete for CrossFit or Hyrox or anything of the sort. I’m not a social fitness type. However, I do appreciate the athleticism of high level fitness racing. I also find Hyrox more approachable that something like competitive CrossFit or something like a Tough Mudder.

@SagasuRunning CrossFit has lost luster over the years due to the propensity for injuries. Obstacle course racing has also lost traction, so to speak, at least here in NorCal. Maybe Hyrox will gain in popularity. The closest venue from me is 1-1/2 hrs away, and it's the only one in the Bay Area.

I have signed up for Hyrox in Stocholm in December and I'm currently training in the Sacuony Endorphin Speed 4. The grip is more than good enough for the sled. I find the wider base pretty stable. I started running this year after years of Crossfit and recently ran a half marathon in the Puma Deviate Nitro Elite 3. I'm concidering them for the Hyrox race, but in find them much more unstable than the Speed 4. The Speed 4 also feels much lower to the ground. I did an analysis of the shoes used in the recent Hyrox Elite 15 event in Amsterdam. Here is the break down of the 15 men racing (subject to error): 5 - Saucony Endorphin Pro 3 3 - Puma Deviate Nitro Elite 3 3 - Saucony Endorphin Pro 4 3 - Puma Deviate Nitro Elite 2 1 - On Cloudboom Echo 3

I can definitely see where the ES4 is more stable over the DN3. I pointed that out in my comparison. The ES4 is lower to the ground too. I much prefer the ES4 as a runner but don't think I would use it for something like HYROX. I feel like the foam would let me down somewhere. it's good to know they work for you. How is the grip on the run on the surface you are on?

@@SagasuRunning I have only been running outside and on a treadmill. Plenty good for that. As a pure running shoe I much prefer the DNE3. A lot more propulsion and bounce. For the farmers carry you can definetly feel the bounce and it takes a while getting used to. The grip is better on the ES4 on the sled push with an artificial grass mat. For me there’s only three stations where i really need stability. The walking lunges, farmers carry and the wall balls. In the end the choice of shoes comes down to compromises, as you said.

I am not a hybrid athlete, but had lifted in the past. I really like the puma deviate nitro elite for stability and speed. On the opposite end you are missing the Nike Free RN. It's very runnable especially for a 1K, there's a lot of foot flex to pick up speed as well as a solid platform for lifting.
@SagasuRunning

I know Nike Free is used alot in gyms and for lifting...but I didn't see anyone using them for Hyrox. A Nike Free or the Free Metcon was actually the shoe i was recommending, with a Pegasus, before I dove into looking at what is being used in Hyrox. Barefooter and zero drop athletes are using what I referenced in the video...those guys are not using Nike Free. People who want a low stack feel are still using older Takumi Sens (pre 8) or Saucony Kinvaras or some such thing. Evne the Brooks Launch 10 is in that ballpark for those atheltes.

This is something I've been closely looking at for quite some time now and i have a good amount of these shoes. I follow the top athletes and remain aware of what choices they make. Most pro elite Hyrox will generally go with a super shoe simply because running takes up most of Hyrox throughout the top times of around 1 hour or less with 8km total. I bought my partner deviate nitro 2 on sale based on their characteristics and common use in the event. The elite 2 and 3 are both also very popular with many now being seen using the 3. They will sacrifice some stability in some of the movements for the speed and lightness for the run. I would love to design a shoe for HYROX and i know exactly what i would make for myself. I think some of the super shoes are great choices like deviate elite 3 but i think i would prefer something on the lower stack end that's decently stable. Think the often over looked New Balance pacer v2 which is a super shoe, among the lightest with pretty good stability and a little less stack. You don't need the high stack of a marathon super Shoe and you get more stability as well. I just haven't seen people use it yet but that's what I've chosen at this point. I've seen a couple high level guys say they prefer the ON cloudboom echo 3 and I almost went with that. So for me I'm waiting to get my Pacer v2 soon but think based on reviews and stats it should be perfect. I think perhaps it could use a little more built secure upper and still not increase much weight which would be even better for the workout stations. Interested to hear what you or some others think I've my 'possible' choice. I also just got Hoka Cielo x 1 and I've seen them used recently as well but haven't played with them enough yet. Maybe the newer version will be even better for Hyrox? As well others have used and liked using the rocket x2 which makes sense as well. A lower stack decent stable super shoe. Again at the high levels you'll almost exclusively see the super shoes used because running is key. You just need something that can get you through the workout stations so lower stack, wider base more stable and decent upper support while remaining light weight. Grip isn't usually as important as some believe but decent grip for sure.

Universally I saw the HYROX community complaining about NB grip. Honestly I also didn't even seem many trying them, beyond a few people who really love the brand. I could see how the SC pacer v2 could be a good option, assume you can work around the grip. I saw very little On in HYROX. A few CloudMonsters and CM Hypers (ugh). I have worn the CBE3 on a treadmill and cannot imagine using that shoe for something like HYROX. Wow, feels like it would be a huge disadvantage for anything off the run. I did see some trying to make Hoka work but grip seemed to always be an issue. The Rx2 seems to be the most favored but still a rare choice... the stiffness overall is the downfall I saw. I did see a few pros talking about trying to make the Cielo x1 work... I mean...🤯 I definitely noticed the top pros favoring super shoes and the run. That was quite interesting to me how they balance the race. I can see a lot of strategic thinking in all of it, which adds another level of interest.

@SagasuRunning kzbin.info/www/bejne/nX7LeqetntF7prcsi=Dv9zzKhhkEmXJb50 Some thoughts from experienced Hyrox athlete. On cloud boom echo 3 his number 1 pick! The elite pro world champion this year also wears the ON cloud boom echo 3 so another strong argument for them. Sebastian Kienle one of the best Ironman Triathletes who retired this year and now is racing Hyrox doing very well raced in the New Balance Elite v4 recently. He responded to my comment and said that's his preference for Hyrox. I haven't used either shoe for anything so I can only go by the reviews and stats on those shoes but I'm also surprised they get such lofty feedback from top athletes for Hyrox. Overall the Saucony pro 3 mostly, some pro 4 and sometimes endorphin speed seem extremely popular in HYROX. Puma in past year's and this year's editions of deviate elite and deviate are very popular as well. Believe it or not one of the best female Hyrox ladies who recently won the pro field in Amsterdam wore Mizuno Wave rebellion either 1 or 2. I think he was 2. But yeah goes to show how subjective it can be with some athletes even rocking Adidas Prime X strung with good results!! 😲

Mizuno Wave rebellion pro. And the world champion for men was Alexander Roncevic. I can definitely see this area of competition getting it's own focus on footwear that'll be even more specific to the sport. Like I'm thinking something along the lines of Pacer v2 lower stack super shoe with a little more grip and upper support might make sense. Still need that light super shoe but less stack for less overall running distance, but enhanced stability for lunges and workout movements and the upper support and grip for sled work, weighted movements and the running on concrete, sometimes wet from sweat etc

@peterledrew2556 I saw him making the MWRP work…mind was blown. I can’t even imagine running in that shoe. I can see Puma putting the DN2 outsole on the DN3, with a little extra width and having a “official HYROX” shoe. Given they are a title sponsors I’m shocked they haven’t already done this. Adidas has an old shoe called the “SL20” from 2020 with would also be a new ideal HYROX shoe, non-plated and more on the training end of things. Once the market is large enough, someone will do it… I’d expect Puma first though.

I actually really enjoyed the Mach 6, until I was Hoka'd (which literally has always happened in every Hoka shoe I've ever had and I have had a lot over the years). I was legitimately bummed when I hat the fit issues on it. However, for HYROX, It wouldn't be my first choice. The grip isn't there and I think the rocker would be annoying for some of the stations. People are trying to make Hoka's work in HYROX but universally the grip issue seem to be a problem with their outsole compounds.

I did see a few pros trying to make the EP4 work and one commented that they are good for the run and overall ok, but just not when compared to the legacy of the EP3. Personally I’d worry about grip on a concrete floor and/or stability on the ski, row and wall ball. It seems like the stiff plate with the rocker would make them unstable sapping energy out of you from those stations. Especially wall ball. While I’m not a Hyrox athlete I’ve done all of those exercises and movements and understand what’s needed… though running in my focus. Did my first Hyrox in Paris last weekend, using Adidas Adios 8 (also mentioned by some other commentators I see). Reason I picked those was (partly) because it has flexible / minimal heel counters. I suffer from Haglund's deformity, and need minimal pressure on the heel - I was struggling in my Inov8 F-Fly for this reason. The Adios 8 worked really well for this, and pretty well overall for the event. I will continue use them as my daily trainer, but would love to find something similar in terms of flexible / no heel counter, but that also gives a it more assistance on the runs (probably where I need help most) for my upcoming second event in Marseille. Do any of the shoes you reviewed / recommend have a flexible (or no) heel counter, or do you happen to know of any Hyrox friendly shoe which might? Thanks!

None of the shoes I covered really have what you are looking for. I'm also very surprised the A8 worked for you in the heel and on the course. You never suffered grip issues at some key stations or on the run? Looking at the 2025 Adidas lineup might be for you. I haven't had any of them on my feet but the upcoming Adios 9 looks to have a much more conforming upper and a redesigned heel and the Evo SL is similar with more foam and a little rocker, similar outsole to the A8.

@@SagasuRunning Thanks for the speedy reply and input. Much appreciated. No grip issues at all in the A8. I am a lighter individual, if that makes a difference. I am also competing in the Open (not the Pro) category, where the weights are slightly lighter ... maybe with a heavier sled there may be issues? And absolutely no issues grip wise for the runs. I really found the A8 a very decent shoe for this event. And I really loved the lack of heel counter, very comfortable for my sensitive heel. On grip more generally quite a few people seem to be pushing back on the grip question, saying it is not as important as some make out (at least for the Open event). Having said this, I still think this relevant, as I did have grip issues in practice with my Inov8 Bare XF, and so initially switched to the Inov8 F-Fly. So grip is still relevant, but so long as you have some reasonable grip (which the A8 has) I think you'll be ok. Can't wait for the 2025 line up to come out, unfortunately, as I race again in December. So, will keep on looking for my perfect racer ... thanks again.

Funny story... Last year I was at a track, that is part of a university, in a group workout. One of the university sports teams had the strength and conditioning room open off of the track. In that room was a place to get water, which is partly why they opened it for us as well. The room was a standard weight room, with cardio bikes, etc... polished concrete floors, gym mats and the indoor artificial turf you often see sled push/pulls on. I was working out in the Adios 8 and anytime I went into the room to get water I felt like i was on ice. The dust on the concrete was slippery, the mats were slippery and the artificial turf was the worst (I tried all of them to find where it was least sketchy to walk since the water was in the back of the room). So ya...not Adios 8 for HYROX. Unless you want to be on ice. I LOVE the A8's outsole on asphalt...but beyond that...🙅‍♂️

I thought that having a plate would be bad as when doing the sled push the shoes you use will almost bend to 90 degrees. My plan is to use something like the Nike trail series for that balance. I prefer those extra big lugs for the grip.

I see alot of people thinking trail shoes are a good option for HYROX. I'd caution against it. On the run they will be awful, especially on an indoor surface like a HYROX event has. The lugs will actually give you less grip there due to less surface area on the surface. They will grip on the push/pull...but so will an number of other road shoes. Any post or video I saw of someone trying a trail shoe in HYROX ended with their next event definitely not in trail shoes...

Definitely do not use trail shoes. As said above the runs are usually on very smooth concrete. Hyrox is still primarily a running event so chose a shoe that you’re comfortable running in. @@SagasuRunning Cool because when done for contest and doing for the CrossFit style the way some of the super competitive going for contest go about it is not very safe using poor technique that will see some if not all injured to where everybody has at the highest Cross Fit events a prescription for pain killers mainly the almost 100% non addictive types that need a prescription as they can be abused when used with alcohol. This Hydrox seems safer as they are not allowing a very poor form/Cross Fit techniuqe from what I understand in the classes for the events, they also require a tad more traning then the Cross Fit where anybody can be a trainer from what I have read up on. Cross Fit Endurance is a bit safer more to the Hydrox but the sport died off on Cross Fit Endurance for some reason with few if any places still offering the sport. Some I bet are using the Nike Waffle Racer series who are on the barefoot side but find the barefoot models too wide and want a more normal shoe toe shape. I know they are used quite a bit for Cross Fit/similar more for the lightness of upper as a Mud Run/Spartathlon model. Lastly a few models like the Nike Pegasus the Road to trail might be good same as the normal not using Gore Tex, ASICS DS 2000 Trail series.

Good amount of running. 8km total so it's a major part of it and the top runners are now beginning to dominate the sport. One of the elite pro just 25yrs old smashed the Amsterdam Marathon in 2hrs 28mins and then did a Hyrox the next week or something. The athletes have insane engines and the legs and lungs are on fire for a full hour, little less at the elite level. Average people maybe around another 30mins

Do you recommend Deviate nitro 2 over Velocity Nitro 2?
@SagasuRunning
@SagasuRunning 7 күн бұрын
Both will work well and are actually quite similar, other than the plate in the DN2. Grip and stability should be nearly the same..the DN2 will be better on the run.

Any thoughts around the Tyr Valkyrie shoes?

Honestly… no. I don’t know anything about them at all. For running or otherwise. Sorry. 😞

Just wondering.. as a recreational runner. Firstly, i need to learn running. Secondly, improve strength and conditioning and third, make progress on 1 and 2 prior exploring Hyrox?
@SagasuRunning

There is so much you can do with strength and functional movement before anything like HYROX. Unless group fitness things are your thing then HYROX is a good idea.

I started doing Hyrox training last year and I feel modern shoes are not good for it. They are too much oriented to running with super high stacks and curved footprint giving terrible stability when doing wallballs for instance. I feel old race shoes with minimal height would be ideal. Nike Flyknit Racer from 2016 comes to mind.

There definitely are a few schools of thought. I’d lean more towards what you do…. But I’d go with a Nike Pegasus 42…. Though there is almost no chance I’ll ever do Hyrox… so there is that.

What’s your opinion on PUMA Fast-R Nitro 2 for HYROX?
@SagasuRunning
@SagasuRunning 24 күн бұрын
Absolutely no...like beyond no. I don't even want to run in that shoe. I honestly can't think of worst shoes for HYROX...maybe the Hoka Cielo X1?

The first shoe that came up to my mind is the Takumi Sen 10, what do they think about it?
@SagasuRunning
@SagasuRunning 25 күн бұрын
No grip, too stiff and bad on the run. Interestingly the Takumi Sen 7 was popular a few years ago as a low stack option. But the Takumi Sens, before the 8, were VERY different shoes.

I've seen it used in HYROX but not often and not sure. If they widened the platform to enhance stability perhaps. I thought about trying it but decided against it and haven't used it before. Based on reviews and stats about the pacer v2 from New balance that's what I'm hoping will work well for me.

The TS11 looks like it may be that shoe. I’m also curious how the new Adidas Lightraxion outsole works for something like HYROX.

To my surprise they consider Boston 12 not grip enough but SL2 good grip, shouldn’t they be about identical in grip?
@SagasuRunning
@SagasuRunning 24 күн бұрын
The SL2 is AdiWear rubber and the herringbone like pattern makes it very very grippy. I’ve found it especially so on concrete, which is slow or what they are running on. The bigger issue with the B12 seems to be its stiffness and the fit.

surely 40mm stack is too much
@SagasuRunning
@SagasuRunning 24 күн бұрын
40mm in the heel is “normal” for a running shoe entering 2025, in fact it may be considered low by the end of the year. 40mm is the normal now…. So ya, it works.

Outside of elite women Puma has very little representation at the elite level overall. At the pro level a little more, for both women and men, but still low. They just aren’t on the radar at those levels really….
