Ed, I keep telling you that you need to get Steve Lehto on your channel to talk about cars. He's a lemon law attorney out of MI who's wrote books on various things including historic NASCAR race cars and some of their legendary drivers, he's owned vehicles that would be called "exotic" for other reasons (like a mammoth WWII truck), he was a tow truck driver at one point with stories on it, He wrote for CAR AND TRACK for crying out loud, and he's SUED most of the major manufacturers that you can name. BUT, SINCE YOU DON"T BELIEVE ME, HERE IS A STORY ON HIS CHANNEL WHERE HE DEFENDED FOR FREE PEOPLE WHO GOT TICKETED AT WOODWARD DREAM CRUISE THE FIRST COUPLE OF YEARS OF THE EVENT. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gWS3mICKprJ7atE Yes, for free, he worked to get hundreds of tickets reduced or dismissed on his dime. @@rogerwilco1777 That may be true but that's just for silly exotic car people who value the brand over the actual performance of the vehicle. I mean you can build a custom car from scratch for $30k that will smoke most exotics. You can turbo an old 240 and set it up to be faster than most new BMWs for a tiny fraction of the price. And I would take that any day of the week. Who cares about the brand. I want to go fast. It's this obsession with brands and status that leads people to pay 4k for a crappy iron manifold. It's just a bolt on anyway it wouldn't really hurt the value it would be totally reversible for those crazy people who want the brand name bad performance part for more money.

Extremely good point on over servicing. If a car is not driven often then it makes sense because it’s not great for a timing belt to stay in the same spot for months under high tension but that is really not a manufacturers issue, more of a lack of use issue in a high strung motor. Exotic manufacturers know buyers don’t drive their cars as much as a Honda daily driver will so they have more frequent service intervals.

Always an interesting perspective from Rob. Lots of experience dealing with exotic shenanigans I'm sure. One thing on is the belt change piece. A car sitting in a dry garage being driven once a month, if that, is probably more likely to have a belt fail than one that has miles piled on it and is driven every day. Rubber, even the reinforced kind, has a shelf life that is shortened more by sitting, than by use. Same is true with tires. I cringe when I see the ads "original tires"....blowout waiting to happen.

I have to say i agree, my ownership experience is limited to a few Alfa Romeos and a Maserati Gransport but i gotta say, getting savvy and learning the ins and outs of your car and how to service it cheaply and effectively is what its all about. My Gransport is reliable but has had small issues which i fixed myself or diagnosed and got a mechanic to fix, but if you let mechanics do what they like, they way overcharge for not a whole lot. The more you can do yourself, the more you realise its just a car

I’d agree with Aston statement if we were talking 2015 and older. Since Aston’s partnership with AMG reliability has increased and since the release of the DB11 they drive great and are as reliable as any other AMG product where drivetrain is concerned. I had a 2015 V8 Vantage I put 6,000 miles on it in 13 months and it was getting repaired for 3 of those months off and on it was incredibly unreliable. So, I upgraded to a V12 Vanquish Volante Carbon Edition the car was amazing, it had a N/A V12 that sounded amazing and I put 21,000 miles on that car and had no issues outside of normal maintenance. I’ve traded that in for a new V8 Vantage and so far I’ve had no issues and I’m 3,500 miles in to ownership. The only reason I see myself getting rid of this car anytime soon is if I get a great deal on a DBS or they come out with a new GT8 based on the new Vantage because it’d essentially be Aston’s play on a AMG GT R and that’d be an epic car.

@le m Cool your tits fanboy. We are talking about the NSX Rob Feretti owns. You know, the NSX with the Honda Accord drivetrain? Like the ones that are not an Exotic? The NSX is as exotic as a Plymouth Prowler.
@reinbeers5322
@reinbeers5322 5 жыл бұрын
@@TheRonin508 The NSX is exotic. And about the Accord drivetrain... If it can handle the power, and is a good transmission, all that will do is lower your service costs. The Mclaren F1 used tailights from a bus, btw. And the Noble M600 used the engine from a Ford Mondeo, iirc.

NSX would have been top of the list as it literally shook, forced and made the super car world pick up its game and I am sure it was not just in the area of reliability alone. The NSX made all makers reinvent themselves forever lifting the bar and changing the landscape forever. Fun Fact: The McLaren F1 designed by Gordon Murray was benched against the 911, Ferrari, Lamborghini of the time and when the NSX came into the radar (being granted exclusive test drive) all others were instantly scrapped as bench markers and the NSX became the new benchmark. That was the impact on an engineer and actual F1 team that was already in cutting edge of technology and design.

Hands down its Porsche. Best performance for $. Arguably best looks. Reliable. Awesome resale so less hassle/more enjoying the auto. Ferrari is a distant second. The R8 is a unique and cool car but haven’t seen any appreciate or maintain value like the Porsche’s and Ferrari’s. Also I prefer Porsche performance over Audi performance. This was a pleasant discussion and he did a great job of discussing relevant points

The Ferrari's are pretty reliable except the transmissions long term for the earlier dual clutch cars up to 2012 in some instances. 2013+ with revised transmission supposed to be much more reliable. Ferr parts etc lowers the risk for that failing.

Some good info here. Will have to disagree with the timing belt bit. Timing components do fail, belts and chains in different ways. To your point, perhaps the intervals are a bit overkill. However, the cost of that service is low compared to a new engine if it’s an interference motor. Also to take into account, these cars are by manufacturer’s term: “abused”.
