Silent Hill 3's atmosphere scared me so bad that when I first picked it up, I was listening to the soundtrack included on the way home and it started to creep me out so bad I nope'd and took it out. Then the fucking game's intro traumatized me to the point that I couldn't force myself to play the game...for 3 years at the age of 16. I had the EXACT same problem with REmake...I still get goosebumps when I play it, the atmosphere is just amazing, the monsters are terrifying (hunters are fucking horrifying in REmake, jesus christ capcom) and the introduction of Crimson Heads was just the cherry on top.

SH2 is the scariest game I've ever played. Even playing it today, it scares the fucking piss out of me more than any other game I've ever played. There's something about the atmosphere that's so claustrophobic and terrifying.

I remember the craziest moment in Resident evil history for me was the village in RE4. Cause it just lulls into this false seance of security. Me I was just like. Oh I made it through 1998 , killed scores of lickers and hunters and made nemesis my bitch. Bring it on Capcom. And then you find out Leon is like Bruce Lee mixed with James Bond now. And you think. " Oh I got this shit in the bag." Then the fucking elephant man comes out of nowhere with a chainsaw. And cuts Leon's head off. And your jaw just hits the ground hard enough to create a crater.

The Evil Within freaks me the hell outta me. But Silent Hill 2, when you witness Pyramid Head screwing the mannequins violently... Yeah. Freaks me out to this day to the point of nightmare fuel worthy.

Doom 3 has moments where supernatural things would happen, lights went out, souls screaming, you look old, glowing glyphs, whispering chants and a sudden appearances of a huge hulking demon. The stage with the glowing and screaming corridor that ends with a pinky demon trying to chew you to threads is very scary to me. Chainsaw is the best weapon in close quarters with a pinky demon. I like Dead Space 2 where you start out in a straight jacket and every move you make must be flawless until you can close the door. My brother said RLH for the 360 was scary. Sanity Requiem and Silent Hill 2 & 3 are scary too.
@matthewd630611 жыл бұрын
Resident evil Remake is the scariest in the series imo. Dead Space 1 freaked me out too. Fallout 3 was really creepy at times especially in the subway, even though its not really a horror game it still freaked me out. The atmosphere and the fact you are alone in a barren wasteland is what made it scary.

Back then, it was Metroid Prime 2 and its dark half that scared me. Dark Torvus Bog and the Ing Hive were very scary places due to its bleakness and minimalist versions of its light counterparts. The enemies I was scared the most were the Hunter Ing, which was this spectral energy being covered in tentacles and phases in and out of timespace. Now, its Bloodborne with its Lovecraftian influences.

---evil within for me. --- I played -resident evil 1-6 including outbreaks and remakes. -silent hill 1-6 and origin -alien isolation -outlast. -evil within evil within is most underatted horror game in my opinion. lots of people were turned off from story plot and clunky camera, but those reviewers who bashed saying "evil within story doesn't make any sense", "it has absolutely no story", honestly they didn't finished the game when they review this game. because evil within 30 seconds ending explains you the whole nonsense you been through out the game. the game has 180 degree twist that you Probly count though about and explains everything how this wasn't non sense within last ending cut scene. the camera is clunky because it's Bethesda made. now dont get me wrong , im huge bethesda fan who 100 percent skyrim,fallout3,nv,fallout4. but I gotta admit Bethesda makes horrible 3rd person camera because they make 3rd person view based on first person view. meaning when you move your camera it doesn't rotate based on the character you see on the screen but the whole screen moves like first person camera with character on the screen. this is why Bethesda game has real time camera change between 1st person and 3rd person because their 3rd person camera is basically just 1st person camera with character on the screen. now the evil within was 3rd person only.. but Bethesda used the same camera style they used on other Bethesda games... and obviously it feels fken weird because the camera is basically 1st person camera with protegnist on the screen. beside this, shinji mikami pulled amazing job bring horror into the game, game is not only scary atmosphere it also punish you, it's gore, enemy are actually strong make you feel weak and helpless. honestly if your horror game fan give this game a chance, get over clunky control and camera done by bethsda. play till the end even the story is total non sense, I mean honestly you Probly played silent hill series and control and camera is at least better than those xD

Yea, I found it scary through tension, meaning it made me uncomfortable, but not disturbed, which is a type of scared someone can experience. There was only like 2 jump scares I can remember, but that's cause it's not built from jump scares, but it was still frightening, and drains one of their mental state if played too long. of course, you can only play sh so many times before it stops being spooky, just like anything.

Interestingly, I actually found it scarier during the cat-and-mouse gunfights than during the ghost bits, because I knew that most of the ghost bits were spectacle - I more enjoyed those because they were imaginative than because they were scary. But guys coming into a room, searching for me, glowing eyes and flashlights, getting closer and closer.... seriously plays to your instincts.

I never touched a gaming controller until I was 40 :) My roommates son bought me a PS1 for Christmas of 1999 (yes, I am that old) with 2 games - Medievil, and Resident Evil 1. I had the same troubles with the #!^(#% controls, AND the sight of that first zombie, but the dogs that jump thru the windows when you go down the hall had me throwing the controller across the room - that game scared the shit out of me! Anyway, a gaming addict was born :) Funny thing watching this video - last night, I dug out my Gamecube for the first time since about 2001, and am currently playing Eternal Darkness :) The combat is awful, but the game makes up for it - I love the glitch where you have roaches on your screen :) And with the Cube out, I'm also playing the remake of Resident Evil 1...in fact, those two games were the reason I bought a GameCube to begin with - remember the horror when Nintendo announced they were contracting with Capcom for the RE franchise for the next five years?! Bet that sold more Cube's than any other gaming franchise - was Nintendo's way of saying, "hey, it's not a kiddie console" (but really, it was lol). Silent Hill - that opening scene and the music, loved it. And yes, the first 2 were the shit. I loved all 3 Fatal Frame games...and Alone In the Dark for Dreamcast was pretty good as well - how about the worst survival horror game? I'll offer up Illbleed for that honor * shudder* :)

I am SO glad you mentioned Clock Tower, Eternal Darkness and ESPECIALLY the Fatal Frame series. And the camera thing, if you know the fact that some mythologies believe that cameras can steal a person's soul. But yeah. Those are the ones that are lesser known but I love to watch people play. ADDED: Recently played Parasite Eve. For an rpg it's messed up. First finding out that everyone around you is spontaneously combusting was jarring. Then the other gross ways that Eve messes with you. And holy shit! The magnum opus is after you beat the final boss. You're being chased by a 1 hit kill. You can't waist time. You can't accidently take a wrong turn because he will find you. He will catch you. And he will kill you...
@Sarah-yd9ml10 жыл бұрын
Resident Evil 1 & 3 scared me the most out of the whole series, but Resident Evil will always be my favourite and most sacredly held series no matter how much the new developers fuck it up. Nightmare Creatures on PS1! No one seems to remember those games but they're really sweet and decently scary. Haunting Ground is fucking awesome and scary because you can't really fight back other than ordering your dog to bark at and bite the enemies, and the style of game is like a bitching mashup of Silent Hill, Resident Evil and Clocktower, yet somehow also super pretty and while the game's story is primarily about rape, it almost feels like it's aimed to appeal to girls. Which I suppose works, because as a female the underlying fear of rape will always be there. Primal for PS2 was satisfyingly spooky but not scary, and is such an underrated game. The realm of Aetha was pretty much a vampire world and I loooove playing it on Halloween. Medievil on PS1 was pretty fucking awesome too. Bloodrayne 2 was a fun ride but definitely not scary...or even good, really.

Jesus Alpha just hearing you talk about Fatal Frame 2 has me scared as hell. I don't think could ever play that. :(

Resident Evil 1 for the PS was my first horror game I played and I died in the first corridor where the zombie is, then the dogs got me jumping through the windows. It really made my heart race. I completed Silent Hill 1 to and I did think that was much worse than Resident Evil. The other game that creeped me out was Parasite Eve! For later games the remake of Resident Evil 1 for the GameCube really got me, Lisa Trevor scared the crap out of me! The worst bit with her is in the cabin where you get knocked out then she chases you all the way back to the mansion. Reading the diaries and logs were always chilling to read, then a freakin zombie bursts out from the wardrobe! That wasn't nice XD

Vampire Bloodlines. You find a newspaper during the Hotelmission, the headline reads "Child's Severed Head Found in Hotel Laundry Room!". Then later when you are in the Laundry room there is only one dryer left to open up... I was like 12 when playing this, scary stuff :D

Condemned: Criminal Origins was very creepy, especially in the second to last level with the old house. The fact that the house is so quiet and empty in the first half of the level makes the enemy attacks in the basement of the house absolutely terrifying. Condemned 2 ruined this effect by having a barrage of enemies attack you and constantly jump at you to the point where I became numb to it

Clock Tower on the SNES. Not as scary as I remembered it being, but it scared the shit out of me when I was young.

Great video and topic. Let's see... Mmmmm I don't know of it's all that scary, but I liked the Clock Tower games (especially 1 and first fear). When Scissorman appeared I was so scared I didn't know how to remain calm and get the control of Jennifer.

The last boss of Lone Survivor. What I liked the most was the fact that it was not jumpscare, the monster just came there but in such a horrific way the game was building up to I was scared to death.

My scariest game experience is a toss up between 2: Silent Hill 1 and Fatal Frame. In Silent Hill, it's pretty much the whole game, I can't pinpoint a certain aspect that makes it scary. It's just a beautifully terrifying composition. Never forgot it. Fatal Frame is so freaking scary, I've REplayed it again just the other year and it STILL freaked me out! That damn broken-neck ghost jumping in front of the camera and that freaky floating head ghost makes my life quite stressful LOL. Even as I played it a second time at 28 years old, I was still screaming in fear at the tv. And yes, survival/horror is practically my top favorite genre. These games I will truly miss in these recently days of xbox one and ps4, which I am not buying. I'm quitting consoles unless someone goes back to basics and invents something less online-oriented.

Metroid Fusion, whilst not being actual survival horror, does have some elements, and the S.A.X. is one of the scariest things I've encountered in gaming. Even now, that thing still gets to me. Namely since you can handle most things in this game, but here, the S.A.X. can still wreck you, even if you have everything. I'd liken it to Nemesis a little bit since, when you encounter it, if it finds you, it WILL chase you. Honestly, there's nothing scarier than you at your full potential actively hunting you down and being able to destroy you.

I remember the first time I played Wolfenstein 3D. As soon as I opened the door the mini-gun-armed boss uttered the words of death: "Comin' for ya!". Classic.

1. Silent Hill: The beginning/Dark Alley 2. Vampire the Masquerade - Bloodlines: Ocean House Hotel (oh god the scares) 3. Eternal Darkness: Sanity effects + general atmosphere in the mansion 4. Call of Cthulhu - Dark Corners of the Earth: The Innsmouth Chase (Intensity!) 5. Silent Hill 2 (all time favorite): Burned hotel (not really scary, but oppressive/sad atmosphere is amazing)

Silent Hill: Shattered Memories on the Wii: I played the first one many other survival horror games, but hearing shit coming from the wii remote and being chased every minute scares the hell out of me.

Kurushi (Intelligent Qube) scared me when I was a kid. I used to imagine that your character was stuck in hell or purgatory, forced to puzzle through blocks until you eventually fall into the void for eternity. Maybe it was the absence of music and the pure black background, but it had me unintentionally creeped out.

The suffering on ps2. First time I've ever been scared playing a game. The mental hospital the babies crying you can't see sudden flashes. The whole place felt sadistic it was very nice. One of the reasons I like the evil within

Some of the Resident Evil games were a little freaky. Whenever I see the insects in there, I always panic and run out of the rooms as quickly as I can. But the moments when I'm really scared when I either run into the Colmillos or those goddamned Regeneradors.

Great video and great suggestions though. I desperately need to play eternal darkness. It's depressing to see what they've done with resident evil. That was THE best once upon a time. It's been all downhill since 5 :(

I will definitely agree with the list there. I didn't realise that Crimson Butterfly was called Fatal Frame though (over here it is called Project Zero), and I had that on the PS2.

Silent Hill 3 was the last game that ever really scared me that borely mansion and times where you would walk down a corridor and the walls would bleed, or the accidental death scene where you would cross bridge in the tunnel and that tentacle would pull you in the dark water. Ive never really got into dead space but silent hill parts 1 through 3 are masterpieces in terms of horror and scared me best

Resident evil 2 when you walk down that hallway at the beginning and that thing smashes through the window. Silent hill 2 is one of the creepiest and best psychological horror games. Also bioshock creeped me out when you walk into that bathroom that's flooded with water and there are frozen bodies in like a ballet pose just frozen still with their heads covered. Those creeped me out

I know that this isn't a scary video game, but it did scare me as a child. In this video game called Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy. When your'e at the first level, you're swimming in the water, you hear a creepy version of the Jaws theme.... this big, yellow, monstrous fish swims up and eats you. When that happened to me, my heart almost skipped a beat.

You know what scares me the most. Is when you turn on your television and your scrolling through the channels and you accidentally land on channel 3 (on your actual television, not your cable box or dish receiver). Then that horrifyingly loud static sound comes out of your speakers because your volume is still turned up and catches you off guard. I about crap my pants everytime I do that. Thats scarier then any video game lol.

I remember playing Resident Evil 1 back when I was a kid and there was this one incident I'll never forget hah! I was playing Chris with my uncle and brother watching, at the time I was talking to my brother who was a year younger than I when the first encounter with a Hunter played out. I was all like "What the hell is that?!", the hunter took 2 steps and leaped at me, chopping my head off in result insta-death. After the shock of such a scene, I started to talk to my brother while trying to restart my game. With little knowledge that he'd actually vanished and my uncle was sitting in a chair giggling to himself. I asked what had happened as I was clueless what went on, turns out my brother pegged it when that scenario happened. Didn't get up, just gone. In such a manor I didn't even realize it! Shortly afterwards we went to go see him and ask him what was up (like we didn't know that already) but to move like he did was truly amazing and to emphasize how fast he moved... Well lets put it this way, he had Carpet Burn on his knees. Yup! Carpet Burn. Ahhhhhh... Don't make games like this anymore...
