I fucking LOVE the Skaven. An entire race of buttholes who hate each other only slightly less than every other race on the planet. The WW1 era tech that is held together with ropes nails and old rotten wood. Tech that will end up exploding and killing everyone around the item. They jump from legitimately horrifying to Saturday morning cartoon villians in the same second. They are the best and I love them.

The thing about the Skaven I like the most and that I think should be done in their eventual introduction in 40k is that the Skaven are the refined corruption of Humans and Dawi (Humans and Squats in 40k). To me the Skaven are the mirror image of Humanity they are a reflection of all our worst qualities defined in a form of Vermin which is fitting given we as Humans have often called our worst qualities as verminous or ratlike. The only way the Skaven can come to 40k is either a creation by dark powers unassociated with Chaos or some Knawhole shenanigans from AoS.

Depending on which edition of lore one refers to the Skaven are arguably corrupted dwarves. Though the existence of Chaos Dwarves and how they turn to stone disproves that particular reference. As for Skaven being in 40K... I love them but unfortunately their role has already been taken - The Imperium. Humans reproduce like mad in that setting. Would have to in order to be able to throw billions into a military meat grinder. The High Lords of Terra even have the political and literal backstabbing. The technology that sometimes works but not always as the Mechanicus has forgotten how the scientific method actually works, never mind their collective refusal to share all they know between the different lathe worlds leading to technology being further lost as worlds fall to xenos or Chaos etc. Edit/Addition: I forgot to mention that the Great Horned Rat is the Chaos god of Ruin. Which is what the Dark King was supposed to be. While it is possible for another to take up that mantle, it is arguably still tied to the Emperor.

Some mechanicus biologis git experimented on rats to be smart enough to be obsessed with collecting tech and big enough to carry the parts or break them into smaller pieces. Needless to say, it caused a lot of issues on Desoleum when they breed out of control and started using the tech they’ve been hoarding. Smelt-Rats are fun.

So one of the main reasons why I enjoy Skaven is that their army is all about the clans working together while still being able to explore each clan individually so that they stand out. Other factions do something similar but I think Skaven are among the best at executing the idea. The fact that AoS has the clans be types also I find great because it allows for people to create more unique takes on those clans while not having to make them minor groups because of the lore. Also to be nit picky the current Verminlords are End Times units and not AoS ones, BB lore now and then would be neat as not many people explore it from what I know.

I think when you discussed skaven as compared to beastmen, you missed mentioning one of the key defining traits of them both physically and psychologically: beastmen are humans who, through the corrupting power of chaos, have mutated and taken on beast-like features. Skaven are rats who, through the corrupting power of chaos, have mutated and taken on human-like features. At a fundamental level beastmen are savage humans, whilst skaven are rodents, which, despite the visual similarities of human-with-animal-characteristics-due-to-chaos, marks them as completely different in terms of how they think, what they want, and how they go about getting it.

I still remember a picture from one of the Total War games that I saw before I even got into Fantasy. It was the description for a gold mine for a skaven army that basically said they mine gold not because they have any use for it but because they just don't want anyone else who wants it to have it.
